Release Day Roundup – 9/6/19

Each month, we always seem to come to the same conclusion when it comes to our Editors’ Picks column: Friday release days open the floodgates and unleash a seemingly endless stream of quality new music. But while some of our Editors and Contributors sit down gleefully each week to dive into this newly stocked treasure…

71 – The Podcasters Who Come To Steal The Attention Of The Listeners

Alright, so this week we talk about Nile. We do a balls deep segment on them. Also, we talk about some weekly stuff too. Alestorm’s hilarious trolling with their 50 euro edition of their upcoming album, Disillusion’s Patreon campaign, Suicide Silence complaining about their album not being well received, Pelagic Records (in general), and metal youtubers, namely Rob Scallon, Ten Second Songs, Paschalis Theotokis and RichaadEB. Oh, also there’s a new Mastodon song too.

55 – Patreon Shitshow feat. Riley of Allegaeon

So, you all may have seen the absolute unbridled rage against Allegaeon’s Patreon from last week. I thought this was pretty unfounded and ridiculous, so I invited Riley McShane of Allegaeon to talk about how he views this situation, and whether some of the accusations made in the articles are founded or not. We ended up having a great chat about the band’s situation and crowd funding. I recommend listening to this one, regardless of what you think about the situation! Then Eden and I talk about news and stuff. The new Metallica song, the new Shokran video, the upcoming Soen album, the new Thy Catafalque album, the new Disillusion video, the new… I got tired of going “the new X”. Instead, listen to this really dumb but amazing mashup of the Space Jam tune with the new Meshuggah album by Analog Staple. Oh, also, Dominic Forrest Lapointe joined First Fragment. Balance Interruption is an awesome saxed-up black metal thing. Alkaloid are on Season of Mist, officially making it the best label ever. Facebook added integration with some music services. Our underrated album of the week is Rad a Trest by !T.O.O.H! – I wrote about them years ago. Then we talk about how song order is a really hard thing to pick.

51 – Grab Your Pitchforks, Drop Your Needles

The title is a dig, you say? Not at all! It’s not because this week our topic discussion revolves around how metalheads gravitate to specific genres outside of metal and how that’s influenced by metal journalism. Totally. Here, let’s talk about some new music, releases or news instead. We shitpost about stuff that came out recently, like stuff by Meshuggah, Allegaeon, Opeth (salt interview part 1, part 2, part 3), Disillusion, Metallica, Testament, Logan Mader’s Once Human, Dark Tranquillity, Protest the Hero, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and more. Maybe. Then we talk about this “interesting” article about Reign in Blood turning 30, and highlight a few bands. Namely Starkill, Mammoth, Elarcos and Raptorbaby. And the week’s underrated release is Ønskediktet by Ørkenkjøtt! Enjoy! By the way, this is that article about Kendrick Lamar – “Why Did Everyone Claim to Enjoy Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’?”

What Heavy Blog Is Really Listening To – 9/23/16

For those who missed our last installment, We post biweekly updates covering what the staff at Heavy Blog have been spinning. Given the amount of time we spend on the site telling you about music that does not fall neatly into the confines of conventional “metal,” it should come as no surprise that many of us on staff have pretty eclectic tastes that range far outside of metal and heavy things. We can’t post about all of them at length here, but we can at least let you know what we’re actually listening to. For those that would like to participate as well (and please do) can drop a 3X3 in the comments, which can be made with tapmusic.net through your last.fm account, or create it manually with topsters.net. Also, consider these posts open threads to talk about pretty much anything music-related. We love hearing all of your thoughts on this stuff and love being able to nerd out along with all of you.

43 – I Spent 5 Minutes Trying To Come Up With A Title

Meta-title! How metal of me to be very meta on a metal podcast that’s also pretty meta. This week we have a bunch of news. Either new releases, singles, teasers or whatever from: Inanimate Existence, Darkthrone, Wardruna, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sinsaenum, Lamb of God, Voivod, Shokran, Dark Tranquillity, Thy Catafalque, Fit for An Autopsy, The Agonist, Disillusion, Exotype, Native Construct and Serpentine Dominion. Also an analysis of how global metal is, Pelagic Records’s starter kit, and a top 10 list of bands from Norway. While on the topic of top 10 lists, we do an impromptu “Top 10 songs that have the desired effect every time”. Or as Eden calls it, “Evergreen songs” or something. Whatever. Then we have our bullshit philosophy corner on Hegelian dialectics and the early metal scene! Finally, we talk about No Man’s Sky in the cool people section. Whew!

41 – Dogs Of Eden

You didn’t think that, once I discovered the secret of being lazy about these show notes, I’d go back to being not lazy, right? The structure of that sentence was abysmal. But I had a fun time trolling Eden this episode, and so did his new dog (RIP)! We talk about: Oddland, Disillusion, Alcest, ColdWorld, Native Construct, Babymetal, Devin Townsend, Departe, Brain Tentacles, Opeth, Orphaned Land, Infant Annihilator, Betraying the Martyrs, Inanimate Existence, Fountainhead, Anciients, Hannes Grossmann, Leander, Abnormality, Wintersun and Nader Sadek. Then, balls deep on Lamb of Dog! I mean, Lamb of God!

37 – Apples and GOATs

It’s the fourth of July, and I’m too caught up in festivities to type up a proper podcast post. Why do I spoil the contents of each episode every week anyway? Oh, right, for SEO purposes, and some people actually read these posts instead of diving straight to the cast. Well, I’ll just list off the relevant artist names and such after the jump with links, and you can listen to the cast for context! Oh, we also talk about our favorite albums of all time. No big deal.

26 – Someone Stop Chris Barnes

Straight out of the gate with the terrible new Six Feet Under track! We’re doing it live! But wait! There’s more! More music from Schammasch, Haken, Plebeian Grandstand, Be’lakor, Lacuna Coil, Gojira, DESPISED ICON and Toyomu, who remade Kanye’s The Life of Pablo without hearing it! What else is there? Drama! Adult Swim are trolling Metalocalypse fans! Disillusion are back! Muse drones are crashing and burning! St. Vitus bar is being interviewed! Singer of The Story So Far kicks a fan off the stage! Sumerian and Basick are both 10 years old! We discuss the upcoming releases from Fallujah and First Fragment! There’s even more! BALLS DEEP: August Burns Red! Then we talk about albums that we were late to the party on, including WRVTH, Good Tiger, Opeth and Rivers of Nihil! Excitement! We have a pretty extensive “cool people time” section as well!
