Our staff has shifted quite a bit since we posted our first aggregate AOTY list back in 2014. From refocusing our content to implementing The Brooklyn Plan™ to publishing our 2017 AOTY list, our roster of contributors has fluctuated substantially in terms of numbers and genre preferences. This ebb and flow…
It’s pretty incredible to reflect on how much Kvlt Kolvmn has grown over the last couple years, especially when it comes to how consequential it’s been for Heavy Blog’s coverage of the vast web of metal subgenres. What began as an outlet for me (Scott) to occasionally ramble about my…
Even a cursory glance of our biweekly playlist updates will reveal that there is a great deal of variety among our staff’s musical tastes. Due to this, we brainstormed the idea of Playlist Swap, where two of our contributors pick their favorite track from each of the nine albums in their grid…
End of the year, so there’s not a lot of news! Shokran covering Linkin Park, Arkona teasing a new album, a new Portal track, Gene Simmons getting banned from Fox News. Decibel’s weird top 40 of the year. Then we discuss why I didn’t enjoy the new Xanthochroid releases and what merit they may have regardless. We introduce a new segment: “Game Changer”, then we discuss Between the Buried and Me’s Colors and how it, well, changed the game. Finally Eden plugs his love letter to Iron Maiden’s Powerslave. Cool people time, including the Korean Netflix show Stranger, then five movies Eden saw at a sci-fi festival, and the superhero simulator Megaton Rainfall. Enjoy!
Well, this is it, folks: October’s here to cap off the year with the final month replete with more albums than is seemingly possible to digest in the time allotted in the Gregorian tradition. Now, you’re probably thinking something along the lines of “Hey! November and December exist!” Indeed they…
Each month, we always seem to come to the same conclusion when it comes to our Editors’ Picks column: Friday release days open the floodgates and unleash a seemingly endless stream of quality new music. But while some of our Editors and Contributors sit down gleefully each week to dive into this newly stocked treasure trove, others find themselves drawing a blank at the end of the month due to the breakneck pace needed to keep up to date with what’s been released. Which brings us to this Heavy Blog PSA: a weekly roundup of new albums which pares down the the week’s releases to only our highest recommendations. Here you’ll find full album/single streams, pre-order links and, most importantly, a collection of albums that could very well earn a spot on your year end list. Enjoy!
Welcome to the latest installment of Kvlt Kolvmn! Another amazing month, another installment attempting to capture it all. Our apologies for most assuredly failing in this regard. Nevertheless, a fairly large amount of black metal blasted through our ear holes since our last installment, and we are here to share our favorites with you. Believe you me, there were some good ones.
August! What a hellhole of a month; for those of us on the more tropical leaning parts of the world, the month demarcates an eerie center of the year where everything freezes in lurid heat. Or, if you’re in Manhattan like some of our Editors, your olfactory senses bloom into…
For those who missed our last installment, We post biweekly updates covering what the staff at Heavy Blog have been spinning. Given the amount of time we spend on the site telling you about music that does not fall neatly into the confines of conventional “metal,” it should come as no surprise that many of us on staff have pretty eclectic tastes that range far outside of metal and heavy things. We can’t post about all of them at length here, but we can at least let you know what we’re actually listening to. For those that would like to participate as well (and please do) can drop a 3X3 in the comments, which can be made with tapmusic.net through your last.fm account, or create it manually with topsters.net. Also, consider these posts open threads to talk about pretty much anything music-related. We love hearing all of your thoughts on this stuff and love being able to nerd out along with all of you.
