Ever heard of Scholomance? Their tenure lasted between 1995 and 2003, and they were way ahead of their time. Helmed by keyboard player extraordinaire Jimmy Pitts (Eternity's End, Equipoise, NYN), their brand of progressive death metal was fantastic. Unfortunately, they broke up, but that never stopped Jimmy. He's been working with a host of talented musicians, including Hannes Grossmann and Danny Tunker of Alkaloid, Carl August Tidemann (ex-Arcturus), Tom "Fountainhead" Geldschläger (Defeated Sanity, ex-Obscura), Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Blotted Science), Vishal J Singh (Amogh Symphony), Phil Tougas (First Fragment), Jerry Twyford (Scholomance, Pitts Minnemann Project) and more! Just this past week we saw how important the ACLU still is. One of the first to confront the so called "Muslim ban" enacted by the indifferent pen of Donald Trump, it began the long and arduous legal battle against this administration. With not only the presidency but also Congress and Senate painted in the most extreme and reckless red imaginable, their work will grow seven-fold; now they must take on the legislative branch instead. Thus, and despite of the already remarkable success their fundraising has seen in the past week, Bandcamp's contribution to the ACLU is admirable. Poland's Eternal Deformity are a difficult band to neatly compartmentalize into a single genre. Somewhere along the metal spectrum between Opeth and Arcturus, the band have toyed with all matter of goth, doom, and black metal throughout their career thus far and continue to forge their own take on extreme prog, and despite the four year gap since their previous offering, The Beauty of Chaos, they band are back to prove that they haven't spent that time sitting still.
The more complex genres of music each have their own trick. With progressive it's melding groove into technicality, being very careful not to lose emotional impact within grand ideas. With experimental or avant-garde music it's to give the listeners some sort of cipher, a way to approach and translate the music they're hearing. With the complex genres that live in the feedback, in repetition or in slow, considering movements, it is to have a core. A center must be found, a place to which you return with your music when the going gets rough, when the ears ache from the overwhelming oscillations of ponderous instruments.
