Alright, I will admit that the recent trend in pop songs (Ke$ha, Lady Gaga etc.) are a guilty pleasure of mine. Well, that guilty pleasure reached new levels when I discovered metal cover/remixes of said songs. I even divided them into a few categories, but there is one important rule: the spirit of the original song must be preserved. This usually means I don’t like people doing metal vocals over the original song, because vocal melody is probably the most important part of most pop songs.

Mashup Of An Existing Metal Song With Pop:

This category is perhaps one that requires the least amount of effort on part of the maker, but it’s still not easy to do well. Actually, there are very few of these that are exceptionally good.

Let’s start with a short and simple one. This one is done by Drewsif Stalin, it’s a mashup of Within the Ruins‘ “Tractor Pull” and Katy Perry‘s “I Kissed A Girl“:

Here’s one that’s really popular, I don’t really like it but a lot of people do so there you go. It’s Meshuggah‘s “Bleed” with Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi“. I like the extra effort someone else made to put the videos together in a way that kind of makes sense:

Now this is a weird one. I don’t know what to call these guys. Experimental death metal with industrial influences? Hooked already? Good. These guys are pretty underground from what I gather. They’re from The Netherlands (so metal), and they make weird music. Trivmvirate is their third album – released in 2008 – and I still don’t know what the hell is going on in it. It blows my mind every time I listen to it, and I’m still not sure if I’ve uncovered everything that’s going on in here. It’s heavy, it’s weird, and it’s…catchy? Let’s take a look at it. Be warned though, this album is pretty much designed to piss off the death metal elitists and confuse the dilettantes to oblivion, so make sure you have your wits about you when you delve in.

“Deus Ex Machina” opens with an electronic groove, which should immediately put a frown on any elitist’s face. The electronica is joined by Latin chanting, and the guitars come in with the drums, setting the mood to “calm before the storm”, and after the teasing is over, we get some good fast death metal riffing with brutal vocals. The production is very timid, which might be a turnoff for most, but it works within their sound, and you realize that as the electronic elements come over the death metal riffing. A heavy and muddy death metal tone wouldn’t have allowed for different sounds. Soon afterwards, the chants come back, and you get a weird mix of death metal, electronica and chants. Then you get… brutal vocals played through vocoder and church organs. Yes, weird. But it is weirdly brilliant, because it all works. It’s not tacky like your generic scenecore band that decides to add on autotune and dubstep; this really works.

The lyrics are about some mythological deity, scowling at his believers. So the chants work with the theme of the song, and so do the organs. By the way, the time signatures and meters in the playing are quite odd too. This isn’t something you can get in one sitting, you have to pay attention and keep coming back. Halfway through, the song breaks down into electronica and chants again, and afterwards we get a super slow oldschool death metal riff, again with vocodered brutal vocals. Gothic organs too. I honestly am amazed by how good this song is, in spite of all the completely batshit crazy unrelated things that are going on. 3/4 of the way through, there’s lead playing reminiscent of Slayer (completely atonal). I know, if you’re a typical death metal person you’re probably bubbling in rage right now, and if you don’t like weird music like this you probably think I’m crazy. If you’re still here, well, it’s just the beginning.

Fleshgod Apocalypse are simply the most exciting up-and-coming modern death metal bands. They take what made Behemoth so huge, put their own twisted spin on it, and made it even better—in my opinion anyway. You should already be well acquainted with them though, but if not, you need to rectify this immediately and see them on the Summer Slaughter Tour, which starts this Friday in Los Angeles.

These Italian metal maestros release their second album Agony August 9th on Nuclear Blast. I haven’t gotten the promo for it yet, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it will be absolutely killer.

Behemoth: Back In Business!

It was reported a couple of weeks ago around various sites that Behemoth had practised together for the first time since iconic frontman Nergal underwent a bone marrow transplant last year, following diagnosis with leaukemia. Well, some footage has been released of that and the sessions since, which are in preparation for a number of Polish shows this October.

“It’s been two weeks since we began rehearsing for tour. Things are going very smoothly and the chemistry is definitely back! We feel very much refreshed.

But what excites me the most is the fact that we’ve already started jamming out NEW song. Crazy, ain’t it? I’m super stoked. It sounds so fuckin’ sinister, I can’t even describe it…Fast, furious, but more evil in a way. Stay tuned, more info will follow!”

Great to see such a seminal band back on track, and that Nergal seems to be doing okay. Hail Satan!

Additionally, keep an eye out for some rumoured US and European shows in the not too distant future…

So following Dormition’s Top Tunes I decided to share my own favorites from this year. There’s some overlap, so I decided to exclude songs that he already included. This is a loosely ordered list, so don’t rage on in the comments section about band A being better/worse than band B.

1) Encircle – “Watch the Sky Fall

This one’s by my friend Anthony DiGiacomo. I don’t usually like solely instrumental music, but this one’s pretty good. And I’ve heard more tracks from his upcoming debut album, Watch the Sky Fall, and they’re all great. If you’re a fan of Cloudkicker, Veil of Maya and Meshuggah; you should definitely keep your eyes open for this one. As more becomes available, I’ll share them with you. In the meantime, check out his Youtube channel or Encircle’s Facebook page for more stuff by him including other original songs and many covers.

2) Tre Watson – “Charmander is Evolving!

Tre is also a good friend of mine, and he’s probably the only other artist that I enjoy in this vein. This is a redo of his older track “Charmander used Flamethrower!”. He has an EP coming later this year, and having heard some of it, I can say that it is insane. Again, keep checking back for more news on his work, and in the meantime you can download his previous albums from his BandCamp page, and become a fan on Facebook.

I discovered The Bridal Procession while stumbling around the internet, and in spite of the silly name, I decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised to hear something genuinely good, so allow me to share.

The Bridal Procession are a newish symphonic death metal band from France that basically sound like Behemoth backed by an orchestra. Apparently they used to be a deathcore band, but changed styles (thankfully). Now I know some of you might cringe at the mention of the words ‘symphonic’ or ‘deathcore’, but let me ease your fears by making something clear; this isn’t your average run-of-the-mill terrible chugging with ill-fitting keyboards randomly thrown on top – this is actually really, really good. After listening to this album, I went back and checked out the previous works of the band, and I have to admit that some of it was pretty terrible generic deathcore and some of it was okay deathcore, but not this one. This is full on, top-notch death metal. It’s probably because the band replaced three of its four members before this release, and after hearing the full album, I’m so glad that they did. There’s awesome orchestral keyboards, vocals that sound like Nergal, Behemoth-inspired riffs, and blissfully no bad breakdowns. Still not sold? Keep reading.

[01/28/2011]

Just as I’m about to lambast 2011 for not delivering on the death metal front, Sideblast show up, blow me away (obvious pun avoided) and let me know that I’m just not looking hard enough. Of all places, France isn’t my first thought when it comes to modern death metal; even I remember a time when French metal was basically a joke, so it’s no wonder it took me this long to catch up on Cocoon. They’re a fairly new band to me, having only one previous album, but if there’s one thing you need to know about me, it’s my gigantic musical boner for Strapping Young Lad. Sideblast are pretty much channeling City and Alien with all their might and the music is definitely there; diet-Meshuggah chug sections, turn-on-a-dime tempo changes and ridiculous synths all jostle for space on Cocoon in a surprisingly tasteful way.

It’s weird that many of the best bands from France essentially take another fairly individual band’s sound and tweak it into a far more sleek version of the original. For instance, Gojira are pretty much the bastard child of Morbid Angel, and fellow country men Scarve also share a love for the heavier side of Devin Townsend. This isn’t meant in a bad or accusative way; I have no problem with imitators/tributes as there is genuinely nothing new under the sun anyway, but that’s merely an observation.

MAJOR RAGING AT BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Nerd reference a-hoy!

So as you may know it’s actually Metal March, in which record companies and others join up to promote themselves through free samplers, etc. Seems fairly innocuous and inoffensive, right? WRONG. Seems ThrashMag.com is running a knock-out battle of the bands with 64 artists from Metal Blade, Sumerian Records, Nuclear Blast and Victory Records(!?). Little do they know that they are casually mining a fairly large ore of rage buried deep within me. Let me just list a few of the travesties that are occuring:

 • I don’t want to live in a world where As I Lay Dying are beating Behemoth
 • I don’t want to live in a world where Job For A Cowboy are beating The Ocean
 • I don’t want to live in a world where Asking Alexandria are beating Fellsilent
 • I don’t want to live in a world where Shai Halud are beating Gwar
 • I also don’t want to live in a world where A Day To Remember, Dr. Acula, Emmure and Aiden could even be considered kings of Metal March.

Yes, I know it’s a popularity contest but at least go over there and do the right thing, you have until the 18th before the first round ends, in return I’ll keep quiet about the whole Goatwhore and Between The Buried And Me thing.

The Project Hate MCMXCIX

Bleeding The New Apocalypse (Cum Victriciis In Manibus Armis)

01. Iesus Nazarenus, Servus Mei

[02/22/11]
[Season of Mist]

With a name like The Project Hate MCMXCIX [That's 1999, for those too lazy to work it out - Ed.], I was lead to believe that these guys were just another brutal death metal band. How wrong I was; this is death metal with industrial influences, with both male and female vocals, featuring alumni from some great bands including Dark Funeral, Grave, Entombed, Torture Division and God Among Insects. Pretty impressive repertoire, but it’s far too easy to get caught up in past glories and forget the present.

Many people were skeptical of Mercenary’s ability to deliver after last year’s major lineup change, which left Mercenary with half of its lineup. With Metamorphosis, Mercenary have proven that in their current incarnation, they are just as capable as they have ever been. In fact, Metamorphosis is a definite step in the right direction.
