Opening to roaring feedback and a trudging doom riff fit for heyday Sabbath, East Of The Wall‘s sophomore effort The Apologist opens up quite unexpectedly. After all, such an opening wouldn’t often hint at a stylistic change that follows that would sit well among technically-minded music fans that East of the Wall’s fanbase is comprised of. For those unfamiliar with East of the Wall, think Mastodon with a post-hardcore flair or Isis‘ penchant for thoughtful instrumentation crossed with The Dillinger Escape Plan‘s acrobatic guitars. You’re in the ballpark, but just shy of home plate.

THE OCEAN – Firmament Above China Tour 2011 from Frameshock Productions on Vimeo.

Every time I see live footage of The Ocean I just want to see them again. Their support slot for The Dillinger Escape Plan in London almost one year ago helped make it one of the best shows I’ve ever been too, and I’m super stoked to see them when they come back next month with Textures.

They recently got back from playing a number of shows - including a couple of festival slots – in China, and they look awesome. I have no idea how burgeoning the Chinese metal scene is, but I’d wager they saw something special either way.

Which brings me to the above video, which serves as a trailer for the oft-spoken about documentary/live DVD that the band are working on as and when they can. Its current working title has been revealed to be Collective Oblivion, which sounds pretty rad to me if they keep it. It won’t be out until next year, but that’s fine with me so long as it lives up to everything I’ve seen so far. Seriously; those guys put some effort into filming good quality stuff with the very excellent Frameshock Productions.

America really needs to catch on with these massive rock and metal festivals. What we’ve got now doesn’t really cut it. I mean, we’ve had a surge in popularity with Bonnaroo, Zion Rock Fest, Maryland Deathfest (which we’re attending!), and New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, but really, we don’t have anything that can touch the Soundwaves, Downloads, and Rock am Rings out there. OH WELL, we’ll make do!

So Soundwave looks really neat next year. Obviously, the headliners are almost always nu-metal bands or Metallica, but there’s a ton of cool acts on board if the headliners aren’t really your bag (even though I hold the opinion that everyone should enjoy System of a Down in some capacity.) Digging through the lineup, I see Devin Townsend Project, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gojira, and more. Lucky Australians.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, October 20th. You can check out the entire lineup in text form after the jump!

Whitechapel always struck me as being either generic or fairly decent until their latest album A New Era Of Corruption dropped. Then I thought they were alright, or pretty good at best. I figured they’d eventually work themselves into a sound I could actively enjoy as their career progressed, and this new Whitechapel track “Section 8″ is pretty damn awesome.

It’s a pretty interesting track that actually makes use of the three guitars. My only problem with the track is the style of mixing and the choice of tones which emphases low end and buries the leads and higher notes underneath, leaving them just barely audible. There’s a lot of cool ideas, and it’s a shame they’re barely audible. The song is still pretty awesome and gets me excited for their upcoming EP, rumored to be titled Recorruption, and is set to include some remixes of tracks, one of which from The Dillinger Escape Plan‘s Ben Weinman. That should be out around November 8th via Metal Blade.

Give “Section 8″ a stream over on the band’s Facebook. A like is required, but suck it up and quit being greedy.

These dudes in The Dillinger Escape Plan are always up to SOMETHING. If not writing/recording/touring on Dillinger, they’re doing guest spots, remixes, collaborations, and whatever other thing that can be done as a musicians. As vocalist Greg Puciato always says, they’re on “The Rock Clock,” which gives no time for sitting around and twiddling thumbs. There’s always a face to wreck somewhere, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a band more willing and able to do that without having to ask twice.

So here’s a rundown of some stuff the dudes in Dillinger are up to which you may or may not be aware of:

Greg Puciato and Soulfly’s Max Cavalera have been working together on a project of unknown specificity. The photo above is a picture that Greg tweeted of the project’s fist demo. Who knows what it will sound like!? At any rate, it’s probably most definitely going to be pretty awesome. The duo have collaborated before on a Soulfly track called “Rise of the Fallen.” Check out the video for that below:

Remember Argonauts? No? The new band from ex-The Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Dimitri Minakakis and members of East Of The Wall, Municipal Waste and luminaries of Burnt By The Sun? Are you excited yet? Or even curious? Should I stop asking these endless questions?!

Fine. Anyway, it was Gwar‘s Gwar-B-Q event in Richmond VA this past weekend, and some useful sod caught Argonauts’ set on film for you internet-type people to see.

There’s more, but you’re going to have to hit the jump to see them. GO WAN!

As I Lay Dying have finally hit double digits this year. Can you believe the band have been around for ten years?! It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. Good lord, I’ll be 30 before I know it. God help me, it’s all downhill from here. I am not ready.

But I digress. Indeed, time does fly. As I Lay Dying are making a bit of a celebration for turning ten by releasing a compilation album called Decas, which features three new songs (one of which, “Paralyzed”, can be streamed below), some covers, remixes, and a re-recording. Neato stuff if you’re a fan! Here’s the specifics:

  1. “Paralyzed”
  2. “From Shapeless to Breakable”
  3. “Moving Forward”
  4. “War Ensemble” (originally by Slayer)
  5. “Hellion” (originally by Judas Priest)
  6. “Electric Eye” (originally by Judas Priest)
  7. “Coffee Mug” (originally by Descendents)
  8. “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” (re-recorded medley)
  9. “The Blinding of False Light” (Innerpartysystem remix)
  10. “Wrath Upon Ourselves” (Ben Weinman remix)
  11. “Confined” (Kelly “Carnage” Cairns remix)
  12. “Elegy” (Big Chocolate remix)

Sweet! Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan) and Big Chocolate remixes. Should be cool. Decas is due out November 4th on Metal Blade. Here’s their new track “Paralyzed“:

They’ll also be embarking on a headlining tour with Of Mice & Men, The Ghost Inside, Iwrestledabearonce and Sylosis. So I suppose half the tour is worth catching! Awesome. You can catch the dates after the jump!

God damn you guys get some good tours. This was teased before the weekend, but it’s been made official today: Mastodon will be touring this October onwards in support of The Hunter, which is out September 27th on Reprise Records, and I literally cannot fucking wait for. Luckily I won’t have to wait as long as you. Nyer-nyer!

Joining them will be both The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang, which is absolutely fucking awesome. You all know Dillinger of course, but do you remember that Red Fang video we posted a while back? Damien loves these guys, so I know he’ll be bummed this isn’t coming to Blighty.

Dates after the jump an’ ting.

The discovery of a new band is always exciting. Will it be something you’ve heard countless times? An experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it a treat from which you cannot stop consuming? I wanted to take a trip back in time to reminisce about bands/albums that not only introduced me to heavy music, but kept me coming back for more…

Deadguy - Fixation on a Coworker

I’ve been meaning to write about this band for some time, and with the recent posts from our good friend and fellow heavy blogger, Disinformasiya, where he discussed Five Reasons Why Metalcore Isn’t Total Shit, it got the ‘ol brain a thinking. If it wasn’t for certain bands of the past that combined the speed of metal and the ferocity of hardcore, would the term “metalcore” even exist, and would we have the many abominations of bands that fill the genre today? Who knows. What we do know, is that this genre exists and there are a few standout bands amongst the sea of shitty ones, but for the bands today that actually matter, they owe at least a part of their sound to Deadguy, the hardcore/metal outfit born from the ashes of the equally important hardcore/metal band Rorschach

Faith No More - Angel Dust

Faith No More, a band that needs no introduction as their name is very well known in the music industry. They’ve been hailed as one of the most influential rock bands of the late 80s and early 90s, while also being a major influence for many of todays alternative rock/metal bands. Whereas their first two albums, We Care A Lot and Introduce Yourself saw the band combining elements of funk, hip hop, alternative rock, punk and even a touch of avant-garde, it wasn’t until their original vocalist, Chuck Mosley was replaced by Mike Patton that the band began to take shape and evolve their sound.
