Horrendous – Idol

It feels inappropriate to categorize anything in the death metal world as “darling”, but if there is such a group of musicians and songwriters that fit that colloquial moniker it would have to be Horrendous. With coverage and praise in heaps coming from mainstream music publications as well as the…

121 – Weekly “Metal Is Trash” Update

This week me and my regular co-host Cody are tired of all the garbage in metal. Marduk, Cirith Ungol, Meshuggah, Decapitated, just throw it all in the trash fire. Then, more positivity. Cody is really excited about Psycho Las Vegas, which leads to him checking out Wolves In The Throne Room. There’s a new Ihsahn song, and I got into Krosis, and tried to get into the new Panopticon album. Then we talk about Death, Gruesome and Cist. Finally, we go over this video comparing Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini, and what the loss of Portnoy means for Dream Theater. Then, cool people time with A Quiet Place, The Knick, Unsane, The Exorcist (TV show) and more. Enjoy!

Atomwinter – Catacombs

2017 saw a full-on resurgence of old school death metal from the crypts and swamps of the metal ether and into the collective conscious of extreme music fandom. Bands like Father Befouled, Ascended Dead, Incantation, Spectral Voice, Gorephilia, Necrovorous, and others brought the OSDM pain throughout our latest trip ‘round…

Hellish God – The Evil Emanations

When dealing with themes of the occult, paganism or any suitably blasphemous subject, metal doesn’t always fare so well. Without a sense of humour, the dense themes can overtake the actual music itself, . The best “spooky” death metal needs strong instrumentation and subtle song writing behind it dare it…

Scaphism – Unutterable Horrors

Death metal/thrash revivalism really sticks folk on one side of the fence or the other. Not every one can be Gruesome or Toxic Holocaust, after all. It’s unfortunate but probably quite telling that the “old school” bands don’t really get up to much of anything now – or are all now firmly positioned within dad or butt rock areas – leaving it up to death thrashers like Scaphism to doll out the rowdy death metal riffs and thrashy numbers. Finally finding their feet after several years and with second full length Unutterable Horrors, Scaphism do a pretty okay job of mixing the two favourite genres of denim vest-leather jacket combo fans.

69 – Salt

Hey! This week we discuss stuff. Stuff like Marduk’s show getting cancelled because they’re thought to be nazis, Wintersun’s neverending shenanigans, Suicide Silence’s new album. Yeah, this episode is called “Salt”. But we also talk about Dimmu Borgir releasing a live DVD and a new album, Gruesome being a…

Gruesome – Dimensions of Horror

For a band with such an explicit mission statement, Gruesome’s music is a complex and frustrating beast to analyze. The quartet broke out last year with a debut album (Savage Land) and lineup that embodied the concept of an “on paper” scenario; one of those perfect storms of marketing that whets the palates of…

Wombbath – Downfall Rising

In discussing Downfall Rising, it is impossible to avoid framing Wombbath’s resurfacing within two themes within the annals of death metal history. It is first obvious to focus upon Downfall Rising’s status as a comeback record; one would hope that the impetus for ceasing a two decade hiatus was a…

Ecstatic Vision – Sonic Praise

Easily the most unsuspecting release from Relapse this year, the debut album from Ecstatic Vision does not sit well alongside releases from Gruesome or Maruta. It sits somewhere above them, not quite on top of them, more somewhere in the planes between metal and psychedelic euphoria. Sonic Praise is definitely one…

Gruesome’s Video for ‘Savage Land’ is, well, Gruesome (NSFW)

The Death-worshipping supergroup Gruesome just released their fantastic debut album Savage Land, and it’s a gore-riddled, razor sharp riff-filled record that would make Chuck Schuldiner extremely proud and is definitely worth your time. The Ed Repka-penned cover art features a tongue-in-cheek depiction of tribal cannibal people feasting on human body parts, and the music video for the…
