It's been a while since we've visited with one of my favorite "microscenes" - the French stoner and doom metal scene. Luckily, one of my favorite bands from that area of the world are back with a new album this year and have graciously afforded me the privilege of premiering a single from said album. I covered Pelegrin for the first time four years ago with another premiere and I've been waiting for more music since then. Happily, "Sun and Blood" does not disappoint with a trippy, occult-steeped video and, more importantly, a more muscular and present approach to Pelegrin's sound than before. Pelegrin's previous music can be described as "airy", a certain thinness which worked very well with the expansive can of psychedelia they were going for. But here, the adjective would be "earthy" - the main riff is much more present in the mix, its tone thicker and heavier. The drums are punctual like falling stones, lending the track momentum and groove. Sprinkle in the same excellent vocals from the previous release, one scorching, desert-sun hot solo, and a few more touches here and there from excellent backing riffs and thick bass, and you've got yourself a treat. I also love the lighter guitars which open the track, setting the ground for the shimmering, stoner sound the band is so good for.
