After the brutal heatwaves of August, the chilly depths of winter feel like a distant threat. But signs of the creeping cold are slowly emerging; cooling nights, the return of pumpkin spice, a dwindling tomato season. For those ready for the crisp return of colder weather, there’s Convulsif’s latest album, which is slowly unfolding like the change of seasons. Today, a new glimpse is unveiled.
Fittingly, “A Torch Then Blaze” is something of a transitional track on Anatomy of Rage. A quick, bass-heavy interlude that emerges with sinister intent and lurching grooves spliced with grinding noise that connects the blistering first chapter with the funeral pyres of the middle tracks.
While short, “A Torch Then Blaze” illustrates the fascinating juxtapositions created by Convulsif: maximalist experiments constrained within minimalist production, chaotic noise rock sharpened to a razor’s edge. Rather than embrace the massive production often found in experimental rock, Convulsif keeps their sound centered and brutally direct. Structure loses all meaning - songs range from 76 seconds to nearly 20 minutes - allowing tightly coiled grooves and jagged, jazzy rhythms to take control. The clarity creates a menacing beast of noise and abrasion, one that’s encapsulated by the brief warning siren of “A Torch Then Blaze” as it groans and explodes into noisy flames.
