We’re only two weeks in, and 2012 has already got off to a funny start. We’ve had some drab news; The Human Abstract have faded away quietly at the height of their power, along with the likes of The Carrier, and Oceano; the latter due to the departure of vocalist Adam Warren amongs other things. Similarly, Killswitch Engage are without a frontman as Howard Jones confirmed he had left the band, although they are looking for a replacement, who may or may not be Jesse Leach… We also had last week’s announcement that absolute metal legend  Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath being diagnosed with early stage lymphoma. Although we remain hopeful, in the vein of 2010′s Nergal crisis, nothing is assured.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. The past few days in particular have seen a couple of rays of excitement, firstly in the news that post hardcore legends At The Drive-In have made good on a statement made by Cedric Bixler-Zavala in 2009  that the El Paso quintet could once again play together, and secondly with the word that Swedish hardcore punk heroes Refused are also back and scheduled to play Coachella in April, Way Out West in August, and possible other shows beyond to give The Shape Of Punk To Comeits proper dues. This got me thinking; what with Paul Scholes re-signing for Manchester United, Thierry Henry returning to Arsenal on loan, and my hamster from when I was thirteen clawing its way free of the shoebox in which it was buried to terrorise the cat, it seems like 2012 could be the year of the grand return. Whether or not you think this is a precursor to the actual dead walking the earth, and thus a sign that the Mayans were right and we’re all going to die up by December 21st, you have to admit that there are a few more legends that need to resurface to make the end of the world party worth attending. Behold my humble wishlist:

At The Drive-In

First up, the mercurial masters of nineties post-hardcore, who as I said above, reunited this week after eleven years away. It’s a fucking good start, I tell thee. If you do the math, you’ll know that At The Drive-In were last seen in 2001. March, to be exact, off the back of a six year recording/touring cycle that culminated in a world tour. By that time they were fucking tired of each other, and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez were on some serious drugs by this point. Things were not happy. In this video, filmed for the renowned …Later With Jools Hollandshow in the UK in late 2000, you can see the sheer passion with which they played, but also how much they clearly despised each other by this point. On the one hand you’ve got guitarist Jim Ward and the rhythm section soldiering on, playing the fucking song…and then you’ve got Cedric leaping around, throwing around chairs and not bothering with half the songs, and Omar at times barely playing his own damn song…but then pulling it back at others. Absolutely electric stuff, and for me 100% what At The Drive-In were about.

Bonus shot: Robbie Williams’ face at having to follow ‘One-Armed Scissor‘.

I’m not overly familiar with All Pigs Must Die, so I won’t pretend to know, but if I were you I’d be super excited about Narrows heading your way if you live in any of the places on the below list. Fronted by ex-Botch frontman Dave Verellen, and including ex-These Arms Are Snakes guitarist Ryan Frederiksen, they’re a slice of what intelligent, mature hardcore should be; not your brodowns and chugging. Last time I saw them the venue’s and then their equipment fucked up massively, but they played on regardless, mostly with drums and Verellen shouting at the top of his lungs with the crowd joining in. It was magical, I assure you, and they’re consumate professionals.

Dates are as follows:

3/9 Brooklyn, NY @ Knitting Factory
3/10 Allston, MA @ Great Scott
3/11 Washington, DC @ DC9
3/12 Chapel Hill, NC @ Local 506
3/13 Atlanta, GA @ 529
3/15 Austin, TX @ SXSW
3/16 Austin, TX @ SXSW
3/17 Austin, TX @ SXSW
3/18 Dallas, TX @ Club Dada (Bro Fest)
3/19 Fayetteville, AR @ Dickson Theater
3/20 St. Louis, MO, @ Cicero’s
3/21 Chicago, IL @ Subterranean

As you can see, they’re both leading up to and in the wake of SXSW, which once again we will be missing because this isn’t our real job and we can neither finance nor get the time off to get there. Weep for us, children.

Narrows are also working on their follow up to last year’s split with Heiress, and their 2009 album New Distances, and because no-one but me around here cares about them (fools!) I missed the slice of new music called ‘Absolute Betrayer‘ they released last week – so here you go!

Painted, the artwork for which is above, is due to be released some time in the new year on Deathwish. Get excite.

John Pettibone is one of those guys whose work I’d always meant to check out, ever since I heard his name mentioned almost reverently during the closing of Botch‘s final performance – recorded and released as 061502 - lauded as a good friend, and member of the bands Himsa and Undertow (and having provided guest vocals for them at one point).

Well blow me if I haven’t already without realising; I’d completely forgotten that I’d heard some of his work with current band Heiress until I read the press release:

“Heiress is comprised of former members of Botch, Himsa, Undertow, Jough Dawn Baker, Harbinger, and Pistols At Dusk. A well worn five piece hailing from the Pacific Northwest, they play a brand of dissonant post metal infused with a cold, hardcore heart.

“Naysayer b/w Just Throats” features two brand new exclusive Heiress songs and picks up where their split with Narrows left off. Both songs are grim, dark, and ominous post everything musical explorations. “Naysayer” falls into a downward spiral of aggressive percussion before plodding forth with a warhorse like pace. While the b-side “Just Throats” navigates emotionally melodic waters, showing the sonic diversity that is Heiress at their most powerful.

There’s no question, “Naysayer b/w Just Throats” is a stunning release. A stark place holder to hold you over the fall and winter months, as Heiress will unleash their debut album “Early Frost” in 2012 on Deathwish.”

Deathwish have always had an excellent eye for talent, which should be a good indicator of quality, but they’ve just released a track for streaming from the upcoming EP Naysayer b/w Just Throats.

I first heard Heiress on the above mentioend split with Narrows, who are another Botch successor band – featuring vocalist Dave Verellen – and I seem to remember it being fairly accomplished, so this should hopefully please a few of you too as it did me.

If that weren’t enough, the band are working towards an album as well called Early Frost, which will hopefully be released sometime next year.

God Damn It Old Man Gloom!

Despite not having released any new music since 2004, I’ve spoken about MA-based sludge/doom supergroup Old Man Gloom no fewer than four times since May – the most recent being last week’s From The Archive – which is quite a high number for such a low output.

Most of this has revolved around the on-again off-again rumours regarding a new OMG record. My hopes were raised, dashed again within a week, and lifted again all in the space of a couple of months, with no word since July.

Well, Hydrahead have announced in their usual fashion (above) some upcoming releases and re-releases with vague dates, including a sans-fanfare tidbit that Old Man Gloom will be releasing Christmas Eve 1 & 2 + 6 + Live In NY some time in November. That’s pretty freaking close…damn you and your lies Ballou!

If this is a trend, then I’m going to start talking about old defunct bands that I love in the hopes that they’ll reform/release new music. So, who here has heard of Refused…?

Also fairly exciting for vinyl collectors is the news that Hydrahead are pressing a new run of Botch‘s seminal album We Are The Romans. If you collect vinyl and don’t have this (Alkahest!) then you should definitely get on this. Pre-orders go live September 28th here.

[EDIT: It seems my OMG knowledge is lacking, and Christmas Eve I & II + 6 was originally released in 2003 - this looks to be a re-release too, potentially with live recordings. I shall now go and perform seppuku]

From The Archive

The discovery of a new band is always exciting. Will it be something you’ve heard countless times? An experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it a treat from which you cannot stop consuming? I wanted to take a trip back in time to reminisce about bands/albums that not only introduced me to heavy music, but kept me coming back for more…

Deadguy - Fixation on a Coworker

I’ve been meaning to write about this band for some time, and with the recent posts from our good friend and fellow heavy blogger, Disinformasiya, where he discussed Five Reasons Why Metalcore Isn’t Total Shit, it got the ‘ol brain a thinking. If it wasn’t for certain bands of the past that combined the speed of metal and the ferocity of hardcore, would the term “metalcore” even exist, and would we have the many abominations of bands that fill the genre today? Who knows. What we do know, is that this genre exists and there are a few standout bands amongst the sea of shitty ones, but for the bands today that actually matter, they owe at least a part of their sound to Deadguy, the hardcore/metal outfit born from the ashes of the equally important hardcore/metal band Rorschach

Russian Circles on record are good, but Russian Circles live are something else, and so the following video of the band performing a brand new track in Bolanzo, Italy is making me a little weak in the knees. good job I’m sitting down, eh?

The track will be released on their forthcoming, as-yet untitled album, which is due out in October sometime on Sargent House. It really is a fantastic track; I like what I think is bassist Brian Cook (formerly of the seminal Botch and These Arms Are Snakes) doing some kooky “woo” thing (yes, that is the technical term) at about a minute in. If the rest of the album is this good, then I really can’t wait.

Catch footage of the excellent “Station” (performed at the same show), as well as a recently announced run of Australian/New Zealand tour dates for September after the jump. Music on the video starts at about 1:50 in.

Something witty. Give me a break, it’s Friday

So. Bands break up. It sucks, but that’s the way of things. For most of them, the reason is pure and simple; on some level, they suck. Whether it’s only a little, or harder than a $20 hooker, it doesn’t matter; the world doesn’t lose a whole bunch. The members go on with their lives, and probably go on to make a greater impact in other areas of society. Like being a human scarecrow.

Then there are bands that are forced into submission for other reasons: money, conflict – both personal and artistic – or sometimes the fanbase only comes after they’re long gone.

This is a chronicle of those bands. Most you will not have heard of, for the very reason that they’re not even around to promote themselves any more. But trust me, they are bands that you really really should have heard of.

If you don’t know these guys, there is something missing from your life: I’m talking about Botch

Rorschach - Autopsy

I can remember back when I was younger, my brother taking me to my first hardcore show. If memory serves me right, I believe the headlining band was Yuppicide, and from the moment I entered the venue, I was completely swept in by the whole experience of that show. The atmosphere, the people, the music, it was a complete rush to my senses, and from then on I went to as many shows as I could possible go to. The music at that time had the right amount of aggression and one band in particular, New Jersey-based Rorschach, was a band that played fast, heavy hardcore infused with a touch of sludgy/math metal, and filled with plenty of unique chord and rhythm patterns.

Narrows: Live in London

Wednesday May 5th marked the end of my academic career. It was a busy day to say the least, but lacked the appropriate fanfare I felt it deserved. Where were the fireworks? The champagne? The cheering crowd to carry me on their shoulders?

I pretty much anticipated this though. My university is lamer than a duck with two broken legs, and so in anticiaption I snatched up two tickets to go and see Narrows, featuring Dave Verellen (ex-Botch) and Ryan Frederiksen (ex-These Arms Are Snakes) in order to celebrate properly.

The first support act came in the form of Holy State, who for me were unremarkable. They had a few good moments, but lacked that edge that makes an adequate live band essential. Most notably, they talked a little too much. This is a lesson a lot of small band could learn; more noise, less mouth. Like I say, not bad, but nothing spectacular. View Full Article »
