Look, I know my column is filled with super subjective opinions. I write for a music blog, I get to do this. I can troll the comment threads as good as any of them! I just choose to use my skills for the power of good. And we’re talking internet good, so being snarky and borderline mean-spirited for the sake of a really cheap laugh I don’t deserve.

Few things in metal go together better than thrash and black. Black metal essentially evolved from thrash when the two were initially entwined in the first wave, and the second wave embraced some aspects of it via a full rejection of death metal as “fake”. While that may seem like an extremely subjective reason to disregard an entire group from your community, it did push the two subgenres closer together. Now we have a host of bands who combine these elements to push forth a new extreme metal, and Black Fast is doing a lot to bring the two ideas closer together.
This week we bring you “the content”s in our regular fashion. Shocking. We talk about Apple Music surpassing Spotify in the US, Dol Ammad’s new album, new Aborted, new Soulfly, new Black Fast, and a few other random topics. Then we spend some time discussing the notion of newer things in music being better due to being able to build up on older works, and a lot of alternative explanations, implications, and counterarguments to this idea. In just one more week, Revocation are about to drop an absolute bomb on the metal world in the form of the fantastic Great Is Our Sin. Coming off of their excellent 2014 album Deathless, this new record is an all-out assault on eardrums the the world over, sporting some of the band’s meanest and most mosh-friendly tunes to date. Take this and add a heap of atonal/experimental death metal flourishes, loads of d-beats and more solos than you’ll know what to deal with and then cap things off with a Slayer cover. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, that’s exactly what Great Is Our Sin is, and it’s an immediately essential piece of modern metal. I got a chance to speak with Revocation’s frontman and overall guitar wizard Dave Davidson this past Monday about the album’s songwriting process, working with Marty Friedman, upcoming tour plans and a lot more.
