Progressive/technical death metal band Virvum have made a name for themselves quite quickly. Their unique blend of atmospheric and calculated riffing was quite attractive to our reviewer Ahmed, and Illuminance will surely be on many of our end-of-the-year lists. Well, they’ve chosen to share their drummer Diego Moronzoni ripping it up on “Earthwork”, so check it out below.

Personally, I always think listening to the drums of a death metal song tells one a lot about the quality of the song. If listening to the drums alone won’t grab me, the rest isn’t likely to. Thankfully, the drumming here is great. The tone on the playthrough is very snappy, and it puts a few things in perspective. While there’s a lot of blast beating (as there should be), Diego also knows to take his time when necessary. Drumming is about as much as not hitting notes as it is, and this restraint helps him highlight the grooves that make Virvum so appealing. Check it out for yourself!
