Virtuoso guitarists are a tricky bunch: their music often tends towards staleness and a singular focus on technicality that leaves the heart wanting. However, if you strike gold, you need look no further than their albums for groove, inventiveness and excellent music. I’m here to tell you that I’ve struck gold: a good friend of mine sent me this album and I simply had to share it with you. It comes from the mind and fingers of one James Norbert Ivanyi and it’s simply amazing. Head on over the jump for your first taste!
Where does on begin? Probably by telling you that what you’re hearing on this track is characteristic of the entire album: well written and performed drums, sneaky Opeth-like synths and guitar parts that beggar the mind, both with their ability and their feel. The bass parts, also performed by Ivanyi, are simply insanely tasty and really tie this track together into a larger whole.
In short, just go back to the beginning of the album and hit play. It’s filled with these tidbits of groove, emotion and yes, guitar and lots of it. This just goes to show you that one needs keep his mind open and not categorically rule out any single genre. There’s goodness hiding in each one, even the most tired of the bunch.
