Tag Archive: Decapitated

Earlier this week, Meshuggah had a live chat with fans that was pretty much free reign on the questions, from dealing with their new album Koloss to frontman Jens Kidman’s face. It was all fun, but very little in the way of new and useful information was made available. What we did get to find out though is that Meshuggah are planning to tour North America with Decapitated and Baroness this spring. Woah!

The pairing of Meshuggah and Decapitated makes perfect sense, but Baroness sort of stick out as oddballs in the lineup, but surely there’s a cross-section of fans there in terms of the shared progressive leaning of the bands on the bill; I know I’d love to see all three of these bands on the same bill. It’ll keep the night varied a bit at least!

There are no tour dates for this trek yet, but you can probably expect those to be announced in the next month or so. As always, we’ll let you know when there’s more to tell!

2011 has been a great year. A lot of excellent music came out and no doubt is probably my favorite release year in recent memory. Check it out:

You know it’s been a good year for music when:

  • a) your first draft for the ‘Top 20 For 2011′ initially contains more than twice the required amount and took 5 revised versions to get right
  • b) you have to miss out on records from some great artists like Fuck The Facts, Pathology, Amon Amath, Autopsy and Hate Eternal due to the sheer volume of great records released
I could easily eat months into 2012 just catching up on those records and the countless other recommendations around the web but I’d much rather bite the bullet and start with a clean slate. So here it is, needless to say I will have probably changed my mind by the time this is posted, but as of the 22th of December this is the best I can do.

We reported a couple of weeks ago that Poland’s Decapitated had to cancel their appearances at Aalborg Metal Festival and UK’s Damnation Festival due to a plane crash they were involved in upon returning from America. I’m sure many were disappointed to miss them, but fear not; they will be returning to the UK next year with Aborted and Cyanide Serenity for a modest run of dates. They’ll be hitting all the big stops, with a couple yet to be announced. Check it:

02/24 Birmingham, UK – HMV Institute
02/25 TBA, UK – TBA
02/26 London, UK – Dingwalls
02/27 Manchester, UK – Moho
02/28 Glasgow, UK – G2
02/29 Reading, UK – Sub 89
03/01 Nottingham, UK – Rescue Rooms
03/02 Bristol, UK – Fleece
03/03 TBA, UK – TBA

Damien reviewed the band’s most recent offering Carnival Is Forever and gave it full marks, so I see no good reason not to hop on this particular party bus if it comes your way!

Holy Catastrophies, Batman.

Despite my sort of flippant headline, the last 24 hours has been nuts, and not in a good way. First we got word of the tragic passing of GWAR guitarist Corey Smoot. The fates aren’t smiling on us right now apparently, as it doesn’t end there.

Polish death metal band Decapitated survived an emergency plane crash on their way back from their US headlining tour. Decapitated are no strangers to disaster, as a van crash in 2007 killed drummer Vitek and put vocalist Covan into a coma. Obviously, everyone is relieved to find out that everyone that was on the plane made it out just fine. I’d imagine the band are a bit shaken up, as they’ve cancelled two upcoming festival appearances.

Then today, Stray From The Path were in a traffic accident and flipped their van. From Sumerian Records’ facebook:

Stray From The Path have reportedly flipped their van in Wyoming while on tour with The Acacia Strain and Terror. The band is fine however their van, trailer and gear all look to be completely destroyed. We will give you more news and updates as soon as we hear. Please keep the band in your thoughts. Stay tuned for more information regarding the accident.

Ouch, that’s a massive hit to a small touring band like SFTP, who will have a hard time recouping the costs for transportation and gear. Hopefully they can get back on their feet and we’re all relieved they’re fine as well.

Hopefully this string of bad luck turns around. There are plenty of tours left in these final months of the year. Everyone out there, stay safe!

I didn’t really pay all that much attention earlier this week when I saw news of a plane crash in Warsaw, Poland. Call me cold if you will, but I saw that no-one was injured and didn’t really delve much further than that. I know bad news never relents, but I’ve been steering clear of non-essential news as much as possible lately. Things bum you out enough as it is without hearing about supposedly upstanding people beating their kids, or even worse, absolute monsters murdering their children for talking to an ‘infidel’. I will never understand people.

As it happens though, there was a point of interest to come out of this crash, insofar that Polish death metal outfit Decapitated, who were returning from tour in America, were on the plane.

Now, as I said, no-one was hurt, but the extremely unfortunate consequence is that the band have had to cancel their slot at this Saturday’s Damnation Festival in Leeds. A statement said:

“We are extremely sorry to inform our fans, that due to unforeseen circumstances that are out of our control, we will unfortunately have to cancel our shows in Aalborg (Aalborg Metal Festival) and Leeds (Damnation Festival)”

A huge blow for anyone hoping to catch them – and indeed anyone who would have anyway – but given the band’s history with accidents, we can breathe a sigh of relief that they are unscathed – many will recall their automotive accident in 2007 that killed drummer Witold “Vitek” Kiełtyka, and the band only recently returned with the excellend Carnival Is Forever. No specific reason has been given for the cancellations, but I can only imagine what kind of memories it brought back.

However the show – the seventh edition of Damnation – must go on, and with Ulver extending their set to 90 minutes, you’ll still be well placed for a day of awesome metal if you’re in the area. There are some absolute gems still to be seen, including Shining, God Is An Astronaut, Turisas, Humanfly and the headliner Devin Townsend amongst others.

Aaaaaaaand yet another awesome tour for you North American types this autumn, this time with seminal screamo outfit Circle Takes The Square.

CTTS have been quiet for quite some time now, but they’re set to release their new album Decompositions: Volume I sometime this November, and I’m pretty stoked on that shit.

There’s no set support, but most of the dates will feature several of City of Ships, Touché Amoré and Pianos Become The Teeth. A couple also feature Thou, who are rather excellent.

More details to come on those last few shows, and we’ll try and get those to you when they come our way.

There’s are also tentative details coming through about shows from The Chariot with VannaThe Crimson ArmadaFormer Thieves and Listener (whose frontman Dan Smith is the guy who does the intense spoken-word section on David De La Hoz). More details on that too when they are announced.

So fall’s looking pretty good for you guys as far as tours go. I’m not sure what the national coverage is like, but between the Between the Buried and Me/Animals As Leaders/TesseracT, Devin Townsend Project/The Ocean, Mastodon/Dillinger, Decapitated/Decrepit Birth/Fleshgod ApocalypseEnslaved/Alcest, Kvelertak/Skeletonwitch, The Black Dahlia Murder/All Shall PerishAna Kefr and The Bled runs, you’re bound to be able to see something cool (unless you live in the arse-end of nowhere, eh JR?). Just look at that list. Phew!

It would appear that UK-based latest Sumerian-signees The HAARP Machine were denied entrance into the USA this Labor Day weekend as they were coming over to prepare for their supporting gig for Decapitated. Now, there’s typically problems that arise every now and then when a foreign band tries to come over to tour and get denied, but this time it seems that there COULD be a deeper sociological issue at play here.

Let’s just cut straight to the issue here. It’s nearing the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and since then, anyone who looks even remotely of Middle-Eastern descent have been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to traveling in the United States. The community seems to be abuzz with trickling claims of racial profiling, and I can see how it would appear to be the case in The HAARP Machine’s instance.

The band’s guitarist is Al Mu’min, seen upper left in the above photo. Unfortunately, coming to America for him may be problematic for obvious reasons, all of which are—obviously—a complete and total bullshit product of senseless fear and racial profiling. Add that to the fact that it’s a week before 9/11′s tenth anniversary, the band are hauling large boxes of electronic equipment, gear, and instruments and that the band’s name itself references a conspiracy theory involving The US Government (hell, their equipment probably has “The HAARP Machine” written on it)… it’s just a terribly unfortunate coincidence that the ever-paranoid TSA and US Government are naively reading too much into.  The fact that they’re a death metal band doesn’t help much either, I’m sure.

Of course, there COULD be a reasonable explanation, but I don’t hold much hope for reason. It’s senseless fear at play here, I’m sure. We’ll follow up with official word if/when we get it.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re going to attend the Carnival Is Forever Tour (featuring Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Rings of Saturn and The HAARP Machine), you’re going to have to be sure to bring a cap so your minds are retained when they’re blown and some clean shorts for when you inevitably shit yourself. The Metalsucks sponsored tour kicks off in September and features some of the coolest death metal bands going strong today, as well as newcomers The HAARP Machine, who have yet to even put out their highly anticipated debut album.

Decapitated‘s astounding and much anticipated comeback record Carnival is Forever—which Damien gave a glowing 5/5—is only a few weeks away, and you’re finally getting a big taste of what’s to come, as Guitar World have debuted a new track, “Homo Sum,” along with an interview with guitarist and songwriter Vogg. Here’s a cut from the interview:

We’re premiering the song “Homo Sum” on GuitarWorld.com. Talk a little about the inspiration behind that song.

I think it’s a pure Decapitated-style song. It’s full of energy; a fast and intense piece of metal. What is interesting is that in the middle part, this song’s music changes to a more progressive part and the guitar, together with the drums, plays kind of a very atmospheric solo. I love to play this track.

“Homo Sum” is killer track, and certainly an album highlight. You can listen to the song below.

Carnival is Forever is due out July 15th on Nuclear Blast records!
