Want some deathcore to start your day? Well, that’s not my cup of coffee. Whitechapel are more apt to put me to sleep. But their fanbase is pretty committed and their new song “The Darkest Day Of Man” will surely make someone’s day.
The track comes off of their upcoming album A New Era Of Corruption, which is due out June 8th via Metal Blade.
The hype behind Whitechapel in the scene today is crazy. I don’t understand it, really. I guess there’s something I’m not getting, but when I hear Whitechapel, I don’t really hear much of anything special at all. My main gripe about them, however, is the need for three guitarists. Oh great, one-note breakdowns played through three guitars. Talk about overkill.
In any case, Whitechapel posted the album artwork to their new album, A New Era Of Corruption, seen above. Here’s the tracklist:
01. Devolver
02. Breeding Violence
03. The Darkest Day of Man
04. Reprogrammed to Hate
05. End of Flesh
06. Unnerving
07. A Future Corrupt
08. Prayer of Mockery
09. Murder Sermon
10. Nercomechanical
11. Single File to Dehumanization
12. Animus (digital and vinyl bonus track)
Chino Moreno from Deftones is on the album somewhere, surely to be a highlight. I don’t know how they fit him on there, but I hope he does his clean mellow vocals, because that’d be crazy over deathcore.
Welp, the album is out June 8th on Metal Blade records if you care enough.
I regret to inform you that Oceano, quite possibly one of metal’s most hated bands, will be releasing another album this year.
If you are one of the lucky ones who are unfamiliar with Blackchapel Oceano, imagine the most mediocre deathcore you could imagine (chug chug bree) with the impeccable vocal delivery by a cat drowning in it’s own litterbox. Then you would have something more listenable.
This deathcore scene had it’s run by now, right? I mean, how many open note chugging riffs can be recorded? Fuck.
But I’m not letting this ruin my day. After all, I have all of this to look forward to!
All Shall Perish are coming out with a limited color vinyl pressing of what is possibly one of the best deathcore albums I’ve ever head, 2008′s Awaken The Dreamers.
The Red/Black vinyl is limited to 600 copies, while the clear blood splatter vinyl is limited to only 300. They’re on preorder right now at this location, set for release March 16th. Both are going for $15 each, or $25 for a pack with both colors. I’m not sure if the two-color pack has a copy of each or just mix-and-matched in one sleeve, but that’s clearly the perfect deal if you’re a fan and want a collection. I assume after this pressing it’s done for good, so avoid paying outrageous prices when it goes out of print on ebay and get at it while it’s still here and cheap.
If you aren’t familiar with the band Aborted for some stupid reason, they were a generic death metal/goregrind band that put out some pretty good material in their early career (the albumsPurity of Perversion and Engineering their dead mostly). Their later work is just pseudo core metal on the edge of deathcore. Also known as, it’s terrible. I heard rumors their new EP Coronary Reconstruction was actually good. False as Mastodon’s Crack the Skye.
I’ve been waiting for Aborted to hopefully make a turn back to their old roots, and I was promised that with this. It’s not even close, but I can see some hope in there still. It’s the same thing over and over, no memorable songs or riffs at all. The production is pretty damn crap too. This isn’t much of an in depth review, because this album doesn’t have enough depth to it to drown someone. Eugh.
The deathcore scene seems to be evolving into something more more progressive. Some call it Sumeriancore, named after the label who signs these progressive metalcore/deathcore artists such as The Faceless, Born of Osiris, and Veil of Maya, among others. I’m taking a liking to the term Progcore, myself. Whatever you want to call it, its presence is growing. Young, talented musicians are trying something different and it’s sounding good.
Speak of the Devil are one of these bands. On the musical spectrum, it would seem that their closest relatives seem to be Born of Osiris and Between the Buried and Me. Speak Of The Devil have this hard/soft duality that this type of progressive music has. The heavy sections feature powerful aggressive screaming and crushing riffs that are cut up with synth melodies and guitar lines. When SOTD thinks the listener has had enough, they take a step back for a second to treat us with some spacey atmosphere and clean singing, found in tracks “Monkey See, Monkey Doomsday” and “Formaldehyde and Seek.” There’s also the very slight tendency to go into a proggy and experimental game of wank every now and then, but nothing as far out there as BTBAM. With Speak of the Devil, there’s a considerable amount of progressive flux, but they don’t stray too far from the course.
The band has a penchant for naming their songs with clever puns and portmanteaux, a la Norma Jean. To me, this is pretty cheesy and gives off the impression that they don’t take themselves too seriously, which is kind of bittersweet. And upon further inspection, one of the members has the role of “lighting/lifecoach.” My first thought I found this pretty confusing, but I saw this high quality video of pro-shot footage.
Eh, I’ll just give it to him. The light show is pretty impressive. But I’ll just assume that by “lifecoach,” they mean “the guy who supplies the weed.”
All joking aside, the music is damn good. The heavy parts are satisfying, the proggy parts are enthralling, and the clean parts are kinda soothing. I highly recommend giving SOTD a listen if you’re a fan of any of the bands I name dropped above. And how can you afford not to? The music is free.
You pirates want some deathcore? Well here you go. Suicide Silence’s No Time To Bleed hits stores June 30th. It hits internets NOW. I’m sure you can find it out there somewhere.
GET SOME.
After the jump, a song from the album or something.
Slow news day and had to attend a graduation. What’s more brutal and heavy than a new Job For A Cowboy song? The futures of some of those kids.
So yeah. JFAC’s new song “Unfurling A Darkened Gospel” is available on their myspace. Upon first listen, it sounds a bit more technical that what they’ve been doing previously. That’s good.
So yeah. It’s a definite step up. The album Ruination drops July 7th on Metal Blade.
Job For A Cowboy‘s music never really stuck out to me all that much. I’m not saying it’s bad (although I’m sure Mitch would), I’m just saying it doesn’t appeal to me all that much. I saw them live last summer on Gigantour and they seemed pretty competent performing live. Sadly, I just wasn’t that into it. They kinda fell flat after High On Fire’s energy and I was waiting on Children of Bodom and In Flames to come on after them. Bad timing, I guess.
So anyway, given my pretty neutral opinion of JFAC, I must say their album artwork has always been pretty amazing. Behold, album art of Ruination, in stores July 7th on Metal Blade Records, as created by artist Brent Elliott White:
Want to hear a new song from the album? Check out “Constitutional Masturbation” after the jump.
