Heavy Blog reader DC Isenberg hit up this year’s Metal Alliance Tour this past weekend, and asked if we’d like to see a recap of the show. Naturally, I was interested, as I couldn’t attend the show for myself. Check out his account of the Charlotte stop of the trek.

When I saw the lineup for this year’s “Metal Alliance Tour” including headliners Devildriver and supporting acts The Faceless, Dying Fetus, Job For A Cowboy, 3 Inches of Blood, Impending Doom, and Wretched, I crossed my fingers hoping the tour would make a stop somewhere in the Carolinas. Sure enough, this monster of a metal tour made a stop in my town of Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday March 18th, 2012 at Amos’ Southend, a local favorite venue of mine.  With seven bands on the bill, this package seemed like a mini-Summer Slaughter Tour that was sure to win.

UPDATE [03/20, 1:40 PM]: The Summer Slaughter Tour have confirmed that JFAC and Periphery are officially on the bill!

UPDATE [03/19, 1:30 PM]: Metal Injection confirms that JFAC and Periphery are 100% on the bill. Rob was just at SXSW last week, so it’s very likely he ran into someone who knows the deal. Huzzah!

UPDATE: Metalsucks was told that the page in question didn’t appear to be the official Mayhem page. Even still, the lineup looks pretty legitimate considering the evidence. We’ll be sure to let you know when there’s an official announcement.

It looks like Summer Slaughter’s lineup had a few surprises after all. While we’ve been harping on and on for weeks about the rumored lineup, it turns out one of the leaked bands didn’t make it to the final cut. While Job For A Cowboy are making it out, Hate Eternal won’t be on the tour, it seems. Major sads, but you can’t win em all right?

Here’s the lineup, as announced (strangely enough) by Mayhem Festival. Hold on to your asses.

CANNIBAL CORPSE
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME
JOB FOR A COWBOY
PERIPHERY
THE FACELESS
VEIL OF MAYA
GOATWHORE
FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE
EXHUMED
*FAN CHOSEN OPENER

Surprise! Periphery and Fleshgod Apocalypse from out of fucking nowhere! This tour is officially unmissable if this is true. A lot of the Cannibal Corpse fans will likely be pissed off over Periphery, but as Noyan put it to me, “Cannibal Corpse fans are always pissed.” Fair enough! I however, enjoy most of the bands on the tour. I don’t hate the ones I don’t enjoy either, so the show should be killer for me while everyone else is pouting.

I find it strange that The Faceless aren’t higher up on the bill than they are here, considering how predominately they’re featured on the teaser image and how they were direct support for Decapitated a couple of years ago. But then again, this year’s lineup is bigger.

The winners of the fan-voting contest are yet to be announced, but it looks like Pathology is (imo, unfortunately) going to win. I’m not excited about that at all (I was rooting for Vildhjarta and Fallujah. Hell, I’d settle for Cerebral Bore), but what can you do besides show up late or complain? If you’re like me, that’ll be your chance to get comfortable and browse some merch tables.

Dates are set to be available soon, and we’ll have them for you when they’re ready!

Metal is much more varied than people give it credit for. Sure, from the outside it might look like a bunch of dudes being evil and playing music that is faster and more technical than necessary, but once you’ve seen how deep the well goes, the breadth and scope of the genre is quite obvious. Far be it from me to preach to the choir about the endless array of subgenres with their own niche flourishes, though. I love this music dearly, and its esoteric nature just makes it that much more special to me.

Since I’ve delved into the world of metal and have fallen into my own specific tastes, nothing has gotten me more excited over the years than metal bands who can pull off wild leaps in genres of music. I’m talking about a pivotal moment in a song where the band throws convention and their own signature out of the window for a moment and explores their own brief rendition of anything from jazz to funk and country. I’m not sure why, but these moments of genrebusting (as I like to call it) is easily my biggest draw to progressive music, and I can’t get enough of it.

Good on Metal Blade for snatching up (almost) all things Between the Buried and Me! Last year they released BTBAM’s latest EP Parallax: The Hypersleep Dialogues and vocalist Tommy Rogers’ solo album Pulse (released under the name Thomas Giles). It doesn’t end there, either! Metal Blade are grabbing the jazz-fusion group Trioscapes, which features bassist Dan Briggs as well as Walter Fancourt (tenor saxophone/flute) and Matt Lynch (drums). Their new single ‘Blast Off‘ is available for streaming below:

It’s good to see so much jazz coming out of the metal world. T.R.A.M. recently released their record, and this looks like it will be quite the 1-up. Trioscapes are set to release their debut album Separate Realities May 8th on Metal Blade Records. You can pre-order the record at this location.

UPDATE: 8:50 PM — So White Arms Of Athena did not make it, despite the buzz I saw on the page for them and Fallujah! Major bummer. However, Vildhjarta are now in the official running and need your help to make Summer Slaughter 2012 their first American tour! Go and vote for Vildhjarta!

Last night’s scheduled announcement for The Summer Slaughter tour was a dud. They haven’t been very good on their weekly announcements on Sunday, and it’s been two weeks since the last announcement, admittedly for reasons outside of their control. There was however a legitimate update regarding the potential openers of the trek, with the top runners being Fallujah, Cerebral Bore, and Aegaeon. The Summer Slaughter Tour are still taking fan votes and are even considering letting fans choose two openers for the tour, so I’d like to extend my support towards frontrunner Fallujah and an available underdog, White Arms of Athena.

This year’s Summer Slaughter is a fairly clear-cut crossroads of death metal and prog, with Cannibal Corpse and Between the Buried and Me at opposite ends of the spectrum. This was a great move on the people who booked this tour, as there’s something for almost everyone. Here’s the thing though; balancing the lineup evenly between the two will offer maximum satisfaction for all of the fans involved. Here’s how I’m breaking down the lineup:

A: Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal*, Exhumed, Goatwhore, Job For A Cowboy*
B: Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Veil of Maya

* = rumored

As it is right now, there’s not much of a balance. Much like The Faceless, Fallujah are a shoe-in and would easily fit among the prog bands as well as the death metal crowd. I also feel that they deserve the spot as a comeback from their recent van accident. There’s not going to be too much more work involved in getting these guys on the bill, as they’ve mobilized their fanbase quite a bit already.

Here’s the hard part: White Arms of Athena. They’re much more obscure, but they’d help balance things in BTBAM’s corner considerably. These guys need a shot at bigger tours, and Summer Slaughter would be a great help for getting them a wider audience. I feel that they deserve this shot.

If you like my reasoning, go to The Summer Slaughter Tour’s Facebook page and tell them you want Fallujah and White Arms of Athena on the lineup. If you don’t like my picks, then vote for whoever you deem worthy! It’s pretty awesome of Summer Slaughter to open up the night with fans’ choices anyway, so go and take advantage!

Hey guys! I just wanted to say that normally this column is Nayon’s pride and joy and he was kind enough to let me take the reigns this time around.

Today, I sit here with the daunting task of making this album appeal to you and unfortunately, I doubt I will be able to sway every one of you. The very thought of this record requires an open mind because most of you will cringe when I utter the term ‘ska-metal’, but I won’t lie to you – this album is very strange. Nevertheless, I challenge you to love this record the way I do.

My discovery of Ninjaspy was timely as it came hand in hand with my discovery of Between the Buried and Me‘s Colors. For most of us, Colors changed the way we see music. After Colors I left my elitism at the door; I started to look at the intention of music. No longer did I try and think about what music should be; I instead started to enjoy it for what it is. This allowed me to recognising Pi Nature as a masterpiece instead of dismissing it for what I would have thought to be a gimmick – and I couldn’t be more grateful. To this day, the first couple of times I listened to Pi Nature remain my most enjoyable musical experience. It was ethereal.

In a shocking move that surprised absolutely no one, Veil of Maya were announced as the latest addition to The Summer Slaughter Tour a couple of days early. Great success! Once again, we told you so!

Here’s the lineup as it stands:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Exhumed
Goatwhore
Veil of Maya

This leaves Job For A Cowboy and Hate Eternal from the rumored lineup and two more bands that we previously didn’t know about, assuming they continue the yearly trend of a 10 band show. Who would you like to see round out the bill? Be sure to let us know!

- JR

The rumored lineup keeps falling into place, as deathgrind legends Exhumed are confirmed to be playing Summer Slaughter this year. For those not keeping track, here’s how the lineup is looking right now:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Exhumed

Looking spiffy! Summer Slaughter will continue announcing new bands each week until the whole lineup is announced. Somehow though, I don’t think Exhumed are billed this high when more commercially successful acts like Job For A Cowboy or Veil of Maya are rumored, but we’ll see where it goes!

You guys remember The Odious right? Their previous work That Night A Forest Grew was one of my favorite releases last year, and they’re working on an as-yet untitled full length follow up, due out this year. In case you missed it the first time around, they sound like Between The Buried And Me but with way more drugs. Don’t believe me? Well, they just released a new song titled ‘A Sheep In Wolf’s Clothing’, which is nearly 9 minutes long and totally insane/awesome. It’s hands down their best song yet. Listen to it right here!

Further details about the new Veil of Maya record have come to light as Amazon has updated the information for Eclipse, featuring tracklist, length, as well as offering 30-second samples of each track. The new record will clock in at a whole whopping 28 minutes! Apparently Veil of Maya couldn’t make in 10 tracks on a full record last what Between the Buried and Me did on three for an EP. Someone needs to start making rules about what constitutes and album or an EP. They should cut albums off at about 35 minutes; any lower and you’re obligated to mark it as an EP or a mini-album. It’s just getting silly!

Here’s the tracklist:

01. 20/200
02. Divide Paths
03. Punisher
04. Winter Is Coming Soon
05. The Glass Slide
06. Enter My Dreams
07. Numerical Scheme
08. Vicious Circles
09. Eclipse
10. With Passion And Power

At least the samples sound promising! While it may be their shortest record yet, it might end up being their best. Eclipse is due out February 28th on Sumerian Records. After the jump, give their new track ‘Vicious Circles‘ a stream.
