Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods

Hey everyone, guess what! The new Amon Amarth will be about Vikings! What a witty and observant person I am!

To be honest, I sort of dread whenever Amon Amarth release anything that isn’t new music because it suddenly brings out the worst in some people, as though I’d be spending my time with the band admiring their beautifully complex album art and being in complete awe of their extremely intellectual and mind-bending subject matter. Yeah, no. I’m in it for masterfully crafted catchy melodeath and more anthemic choruses than you can shake a drinking horn at.

Rockstar Mayhem Fest 2013

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is something I have loved since it started. Each year it brings something for everyone, and I was lucky enough to be there in 2011 for Disturbed‘s last show before their hiatus, Trivium‘s first tour playing stuff from In Waves, Megadeth for obvious reasons, and to even be front row for Machine Head, singing ‘Halo’ in the pouring rain. This year, though, the lineup is sick. Mastodon, Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Machine Head, Job For A Cowboy, Born Of Osiris…it’s so good! Of course there are some bands I have no care for (ahem, Five Finger Death Punch, Motionless In White) but that’s why there’s multiple stages, right? And speaking of, this year there will be not three, but FOUR STAGES. I am revving up my excitebike as we speak. I’m definitely going to find my way to the Tampa date, and hopefully be able to score some sweet interviews while I’m there! You can read the full lineup and dates after the jump.

Suffocation - Pinnacle of Bedlam

It’s not exactly news to anyone that record sales are on a steep decline. Record stores are closing left and right and are a rarity these days, with people instead opting for piracy to get their music fix. No matter how you slice it, when you buy records — especially from underground and independent artists and labels — it affects the band’s success. Kids these days often scoff at the idea of buying music, saying, “well they make all their money from tours and merch anyway.” Not necessarily; many tours these days are booked based on first week album sales and if the band doesn’t tour, merch sales plummet, so if you want your favorite band to get a sweet support slot, pre-order their album or pick it up in the first week. Hell, every little bit counts, and it’s better late then never.

Suffocation guitarist Guy Marchais shares this same sentiment. To make a point, Marchais filmed himself going to his local F.Y.E. and purchasing the latest Suffocation record Pinnacle of Bedlam. It’s quite humbling, and you can watch the video below:

Æther Realm are the best melodic death metal band deceptively not from Finland you’ll have the pleasure of hearing this year. Their sound can only be described as Wintersun sitting down one day for a horn of mead to discuss being beyond great, when Eluveitie show up and decide that it’s time for collaboration. Their debut effort One Chosen by the Gods certainly incorporates orchestral touches for that added huge sound, but never lets the heaviness of the music fall by the wayside or simply get lost.

Another Dethklok offering “born of evil in a fiery volcano,” Dethalbum III is the latest album spawned by the hit animated show Metalocalypse, which first aired in 2006. Spearheaded by the multitalented Brendon Small (one of the three actual personnel behind the music), the series is centered around a hilariously idiotic and narcissistic death metal five-piece band called Dethklok and all their debaucherous antics. While making seasons three and four, Small was clearly focusing harder on the musical aspect of the show more than ever, as Dethalbum III, a collection of music resulting from these two seasons, illustrates. It sounds more like the product of a “real” band. But does that mean it’s really better?

If you’re anything like me, then you understand the woes of somebody who still like to support bands and buy CDs and vinyl records, especially those that are limited editions. However, unless you’re rich, then you understand how sometimes you have to prioritize on what you buy, as it can get very expensive. Metal Wreckage understands that, and they are here to help us all out.

The website is comprised of “Daily Steels”, deals they offer which include tons of one bands’ albums for a very low price. They just ran The Acacia Strain‘s last 4 albums for $33, which is way cheaper considering the average CD price is around $13 bucks (for all those who aren’t good with math, that’s $52 all together). It’s fantastic, especially considering I’m a broke college student who is spending my savings on music when I should be saving for something important (sorry, mom and dad).

Head over to the website everyday to check it out. They post a calendar every week to tell you what deal they are offering, so you won’t miss out! This week, expect deals from Amon Amarth, Dio, Mastodon, For Today, and Testament!

Supergroups are often looked at in the high hopes that they turn out to be more than the sum of their parts in a perfect blend on influences from past works. As we’ve seen in the past, this isn’t usually the case. Expectations are always quite high and the end result is never really what everyone was hoping it would be. Enter Soen, a semi-supergroup of sorts featuring two high profile musicians, drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth, ex-Amon Amarth) and bassist Steve DiGiorgio (ex-Death, ex-Testament, Charred Walls of the Damned). Rounded out by the lesser known Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis, Soen are a progressive rock band that aren’t exactly simply the sum of their parts, but an almost direct carbon-copy of the collective work of others.

Death metal isn’t exactly what you would call my forte as a metal fan. It’s always been the most difficult genre for me to delve into for reasons that I find hard to vocalize. I like all of the individual parts that make up death metal, but often times I find the music to be too dysfunctional and less cohesive than I would like, which really brings down the listening experience. Asphyx’s Deathhammer is not like that at all. Everything is concise, powerful, and brutal — or brootz as I will refer to it from now on – which makes sense; Deathhammer is the eighth studio album from these Dutch heavy metallers, and their second since their reformation a few years ago; these guys have had a long career and it’s clear they have had the time to iron out the problems in their sound, and to get the precise method of madness that suits them. Deathhammer is another powerful release from a band who are comfortable and competent in their given field, and an experience I truly enjoyed, despite it being a death metal album.

I’ve never been too familiar or fond of Eluveitie, the Swiss folk-metallers, or folk metal in general—I much prefer the drastically different sounds of folk rock— but 2012 seems to be passing by at a snails pace, and I was desperate for a new release that could spark some sort of fire in me, so I gave Helvetios—their fifth studio album; a sprawling concept album that stretches just shy of the one hour mark—a spin. I wasn’t expecting much, but I figured it would be better than nothing. With that in mind, let me say just how wonderful it is when a band completely shatters your expectations, and has you re-evaluate your thoughts behind them. With this album Eluveitie have done something right, and set a phenomenal precedent for the rest of the year.

I am experiencing some major cognitive dissonance right now. My ears tell me that I’m listening to top notch pagan/folk/viking/black metal (PFVBM), but my eyes are saying that Oakhelm are from Oregon. I have no idea how this works out, but let me make it clear: Echtra is the dream PFVBM record, and Oakhelm can clearly give any Scandinavian mountain-dweller a run for his money. So, without further ado, let’s all mount our battle axes and take a trip to the grvm, northern mountains of…Portland.
