Release Day Roundup – 11/9/18

Each month, we always seem to come to the same conclusion when it comes to our Editors’ Picks column: Friday release days open the floodgates and unleash a seemingly endless stream of quality new music. But while some of our Editors and Contributors sit down gleefully each week to dive into this newly stocked treasure…

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Fractal Cypher Introduce You to “The Grandeur Of It All”

Our second premiere of the day couldn’t be more different than the first one. Where Winter Dust offered us gloom and contemplation, Fractal Cypher are all about speed, power, and technicality. You might recognize the name if you’ve been following the podcast; Noyan has been an especially vocal supporter of the band but…

143 – We Called This 144 Because Reasons

Heavy Pod Is Heavy Cast!

A bunch of industry news this week! Spotify uniting with Distrokid, revenue shares of services, and ranting about monopolies versus fragmentation. Then some bummer news – Oli from All That Remains passed away, the Ghost members lost their lawsuit, and The Faceless are embarking on a 10th anniversary tour for Planetary Duality. Then some new music! Babymetal, Soilwork, Fractal Cypher, and Beyond Creation. Then cool people time! I gush about The Return of the Obra Dinn, and Eden gushes about Maniac. Enjoy!

101 – Why Would Anyone Listen to Prog-Power?

This week we’re doing something different as well. Instead of covering the news (there wasn’t a lot) we’re just going to do a “starter kit” on progressive power metal (despite my objections)! Basically, why anyone would want to listen to the genre (no idea) and if so, what bands should they start with (none of them)? Eden and I both discuss some classics. Names mentioned include Blind Guardian, Angra, Therion, Pagan’s Mind, Kamelot, Teramaze and Fractal Cypher. Then, we do an in-depth spoiler discussion on the excellent Blade Runner 2049. Enjoy!

92 – Trent-setter

Wow, both Eden and I are together again! And it’s a long episode! It’s like back in the old days. This week we have some news, some new music, some old music, and some other random stuff. Spawn of Possession call it quits, Nolly leaves Periphery, Hip-hop/R&B has surpassed rock, Trent Reznor puts his foot in his mouth. Then we have stuff from Trivium, Dyscarnate, First Fragment, Primus, Caligula’s Horse, Adimiron, Ne Obliviscaris. We talk about Fractal Cypher, and Roadrunner United and Nuclear Blast All-Stars. Finally, cool people time regarding Pyre, PUBG, Total War, and more. Enjoy!

By the way, the teaser for the NYN album Entropy: Of Chaos And Salt is finally here, so check it out!

What Heavy Blog Is Really Listening To – 8/4/17

For those who missed our last installment, We post biweekly updates covering what the staff at Heavy Blog have been spinning. Given the amount of time we spend on the site telling you about music that does not fall neatly into the confines of conventional “metal,” it should come as no surprise that many of us on staff have pretty eclectic tastes that range far outside of metal and heavy things. We can’t post about all of them at length here, but we can at least let you know what we’re actually listening to. For those that would like to participate as well (and please do) can drop a 3X3 in the comments, which can be made with tapmusic.net through your last.fm account, or create it manually with topsters.net. Also, consider these posts open threads to talk about pretty much anything music-related. We love hearing all of your thoughts on this stuff and love being able to nerd out along with all of you.

59 – AOTY 2016 Deliberations, Part 1: Vape In

So we’re doing a two-part series on picking the podcast’s official albums of the year 2016. We start with the blog’s list of 400+ albums that are worth consideration this year, whittle it down to 86 albums we care about, and then start cutting them. The objective is to get to a ranked list of 10 items and an overall list of 20 albums. We get down to about 45 this week until the cuts really start to hurt. This was real fun to do, so I hope you all enjoy too! The lists will be posted below.
