Green is closely associated with the holiday season, but sludge ‘n’ rollers Weed Demon have a slightly different kind of greenery decking the halls.
Active in the stoner rock and sludge scenes for almost a decade, Weed Demon have cultivated a signature strain of blues-laden doom that delivers crushing riffs and space-age atmospheres with equal prowess. The joy of Weed Demon is in the journey, the cosmic trip that delights in every note with raw enthusiasm and smoky intensity.
Their latest album, The Doom Scroll, finds Weed Demon digging into their roots with fresh influences of death metal and thrash. The expanded sound is both a trip through metal history, zig-zagging across the 70s and 80s, and the band’s early songwriting style. The first single off the album,“Roasting the Sacred Bones,” captures Weed Demon’s new sound with slow-burning riffs punctuated by thrashy intensity.
“Roasting the Sacred Bones” has something for everyone: caustic, sludged-out grooves, slow-rolling doom riffs, and even a dash of dungeon synthy weirdness. Infuse it all with death metal intensity and you have a powerful song guaranteed to put you on the floor. You’ll find yourself completely engrossed in infectious stoner grooves, only to risk breaking your neck as vocalist (and bassist) Jordan Holland bursts into agitated shouts. The song is everything you’ve ever loved about vintage metal, from crushing riffs to smoky grooves to raw, furious vocals.
Holland shared his take on the new track:
“‘Roasting the Sacred Bones’ is easily the fastest and thrashiest song we’ve ever released. This was by design. When you’ve based your career as a band off of slow, plodding, drawn out riffs, it helps to break up the monotony. Lyrically, I wanted to take a step back to the days when I wrote dark and devilish songs laced with tongue-in-cheek drug innuendos. Check out our first EP “Stoned to Death” for some reference material. We are called Weed Demon for fuck’s sake. For those that don’t know what “roasting a bone” means, go ask your hippie grandparents.”
