We’ve been dragging our feet a bit in talking more about avant-garde metal; since we at Heavy Blog cover the likes of Gorguts and Dodecahedron quite a bit, Scott and I wanted to find something that wasn’t as well-known but still well-regarded. So, Scott found Pan.Thy.Monium—a side project of Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity) that checks a lot of avant-garde ticks off with their final album Khaooohs and Kon-Fus-Ion.
I’m going to be blunt with this: I personally did not enjoy this album, for reasons that I go into ad nauseam in this episode. I would really only recommend it as a potential gateway to metal’s more “out there” bands and the avant-garde as a whole, but I feel that there are other, arguably better albums that could work just as well.
However, despite my reservations, I believe it’s worth giving Khaooohs a try—you never know what you might like until you actually give it a fair chance.
