38 – We’re Not Even Trying

I actually enjoyed the “don’t really bother to put stuff in the description” format as it makes my life easier, but hey, I guess I can make an effort once a week. Just kidding, we have new music or related stuff from: Oddland, Orphaned Land, Mephistopheles, Jimmy Pitts and Equipoise, Imperium Dekadenz, Drudkh, Inquisition, Periphery, Gojira, Hadal Maw, Iron Maiden, Exotype, Ayreon. We talk about the split between Obscura and Tom Geldschlager getting heated (check out his new song by the way!), this interesting article on language in metal, Insomnium cancelling their show in Turkey, and the recent trend of sexual assaults at festivals. Then we do the long-awaited Balls Deep on In Flames, hence the episode title (it refers to the band, not us)!

    Hey guys,

Just listened to the podcast for the first time. Great stuff! I want to applaud you for the way you handled the sexual assault story, in this day and age it’s extremely rare for people to not start barfing up their uninformed opinions at every opportunity. Your podcast is a very welcome breath of fresh air!

One thing that annoyed me (for lack of a better word) though is the sound quality. There seems to be some extreme noise-gating and compression going on, do you guys record straight from skype? There are probably very good reasons for the way it sounds but I wonder if you’ve considered each recording straight to a DAW or something?

    Keep up the great work!

    Ruben

That’s actually how we do it, but due to aforementioned factors (eden moving to a new room) the setup was a bit messed up, and I’ll compensate for that next week!

Alright, that makes sense. I’ll definitely be tuning in next week!

yeah the sound quality was worse on this episode than it normally is, so i imagine it will be back to normal for next time

my understanding of the credit dispute between steffen and tom was this: tom acknowledged he had been given credit for weltseele; however, he claimed to have contributed major parts for most of the other songs on the record, and he did not get credited for those.

moving on to in flames – the lunar strain’s production just kills it for me, i can’t enjoy it at all. after that i love everything up until reroute to remain, which was ok but not great. f(r)iend is one of my fave IF tracks and so i really liked soundtrack and come clarity. i also really liked a sense of purpose – mirror’s truth, alias, delight and angers + the chosen pessimist are all great tracks imo. for me, the cliff was when jesper left. sounds of a playground fading is crap (although fear is the weakness is an amazing track), and siren charms is even worse.

He did get credited for the rest of the album as well though.

yeah in that case he (tom) really has no leg to stand on, so i agree with what you said – steffen is mostly right here, but that doesnt mean he isnt being a dick about it all

Yeah I agree. What Eden said in the cast about being downed and walking away, basically.

Hey guys great podcast, I’ve listened to a few now but this is the first I’ll comment on. Regarding Obscura’s sound live, I recall either hearing in an interview or reading one that the band listened to live performances of themselves and decided that those songs that were faster than 270 bpms came off sounding like “mush” (I’m paraphrasing liberally here), and that for future tours they would slow the songs down to that cap. Perhaps what was listened to was either pre or post this alteration. Food for thought. Keep up the great work! Cheers!
