Fans of the band’s back catalog may take a bit to adjust to the band’s new direction, as there aren’t many of the mathy, Botch-esque riffs many have grown to associate with the band over the years. Instead, KEN mode have almost ditched their metal influences altogether and fully embraced their love of various noise-rock and avant-garde artists of the 80s and early 90s. Production mastermind Steve Albini’s mix sounds positively huge and equally as organic here and really aids the band in sounding as natural as possible, which will inevitably help these songs translate quite well live. If the idea of listening to a Melvins record that’s been filtered by group of Canucks who love their dissonant death metal as much as they love catchy hooks, you’ve come to the right place. This is definitely one of the most intriguing records of 2015 so far!
