Scale The Summit have been touring fairly extensive the last couple of years, supporting pretty much every band ever. These instrumetallers really do get around, and it was only a matter of time before they had their own headlining tour. It had never occurred to me until now that these dudes never had a proper national headlining tour before, but in early 2012, they’ll be taking to the road with Elitist and performing nightly 70-minute sets with material from all three albums. Huzzah!

Check out the dates below, and make it out if you can.

Sort of.

This is the coolest thing I believe I’ve ever seen.

Volumes sure did see a rapid jump to success. Before even releasing their debut album, they toured alongside the biggest bands in the entire scene and gaining a sizable fanbase. I could never really see it at the time of their EP, though. It seemed that almost everyone was raving about The Concept of Dreaming (this site’s official review included), and I just couldn’t get what all the fuss was about. Now the LA-based sextet released their highly anticipated full-length album Via to a reasonable and unignorable amount of fanfare, I felt obligated to give it another spin. I think I’m starting to see it.

ThePRP is reporting that prog metal legends Cynic are set to tour with 3, Scale the Summit, and Anathema starting next month. At a time of the year when there’s a bunch of promising tours going on, Cynic announcing a line of dates a mere month in advance is risky business. You’ve got to have time to promote and for fans to make arrangements and save money. When I think about it, I’ve known about shows upwards of 4 months in advance, which is good as I usually have to travel and book hotel rooms and all that neat stuff. Hopefully the short notice works for them.

Here are the dates so far:

11/03 West Chester, PA – The Note (no 3)
11/05 New York, NY – Gramercy Theatre (“The Metal Suckfest“) (no 3)
11/11 Pontiac, MI – Clutch Cargo’s
11/12 Joliet, IL – Mojoes
11/13 St. Paul, MN – Station 4
11/18 Portland, OR – Hawthorne Theatre
11/22 San Francisco, CA – Slim’s
11/23 West Hollywood, CA – Key Club

More dates are expected to be announced shortly. We’ll keep you posted!

Cynic are set to release their new EP Carbon-Based Anatomy November 11th on Season of Mist. Keep an eye out!

As if you didn’t already have enough shows to see at the ass-end of the year, you can now add a North American Protest The Hero tour featuring Scale the Summit and Last Chance To Reason. The lineup really does speak for itself and obviously you’ll want to know where this tour is headed, so I’ll shut up now.

Here’s the dates, via ThePRP.

11/28 Grand Rapids, MI – The Intersection
11/29 Iowa City, IA – Blue Moose
11/30 Minneapolis, MN – Station 4
12/02 Colorado Springs, CO – Black Sheep
12/03 Ft. Collins, CO – Aggie Theater
12/05 Reno, NV – The Alley
12/06 Chico, CA – Senator Theater
12/07 Anaheim, CA – Chain Reaction
12/08 Tucson, AZ – Skrappy’s
12/09 El Paso, TX – Tricky Falls
12/11 San Antonio, TX – White Rabbit
12/13 Pensacola, FL – Vinyl Music Hall
12/14 Tampa, FL – State Theater
12/15 Jacksonville, FL – Freebird Live
12/16 Greensboro, NC – Greene Street Club
12/17 Charleston, SC – Music Farm
12/18 Charlotte, NC – Amos South End
12/19 Knoxville, TN – Valarium
12/21 West Springfield, VA – Jaxx
12/22 Pittsburgh, PA – Mr. Smalls

The last great tour of the year? Looks like it! Not many bands are touring between Christmas and New Years, so be sure to make it out for this prog-tastic tour.

Do you like technical and melodic guitar jams from bands like Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, and Bulb/Periphery, as well as projects like Piotrek Gruzka?! Well you can (and should) make an effort to add Sithu Aye to your music library this very minute.

Sithy Aye is a guitarist based out of Scotland who just recently released his debut album Cassini. It’s djenty instrumental progressive metal that offers some spectacular guitar solos and leads that don’t overcomplicate things with unneeded wank (although there’s enough room here for showing off), focusing on breathtaking melodies. Chances are, if you’re an avid reader of this site, you will absolutely enjoy this album. You can stream it above and download it for free on Bandcamp.

Let’s also throw Sithu a bone and like his Facebook page. As of this writing he still has under 200 likes. Criminal!

Tre Watson – Gravestones

Tre Watson

Gravestones

01. The Mortal Coil
02. Demise
03. Thread of Humanity
04. Dancing on Gravestones

[09/10/11]
[Self-released]

Despite the fact that we talk about Tre Watson‘s many doings on a regular basis, I’ve never actually committed myself to doing a review of his work outside of promotion (which is all honest, mind you) because I consider Tre to be a good friend and I don’t like to review the work of friends even when I thoroughly enjoy their work (the exception being Cyclamen, but I was a fan before I got a chance to know Hayato, so there’s a loophole in the system). At any rate, when I attempt to review the work of people I know on a more personal basis, I find it hard to remain unbiased in either criticisms or promotion. Tre Watson’s new EP Gravestones is different in that it’s too damn good to pass up on talking about past a one-hundred word post about how you should go download it ASAP. You totally should because it’s free, but there’s much more that could be said.

Do you like instrumental progressive metal? Of course you do. To be fair, it was kind of stupid of me to ask.

Odyssey‘s new album An Abstract Existence dropped last week, and it’s quite a rocker. I’ve been super busy lately, and when combined with my usual laziness, I’ve put off hearing this record for too long, and I have to say that this, along with Bispora’s new EP, are the current spice to my otherwise monotonous day. If you’ve never heard of this three-piece Washington-based band before, imagine a more heavy and metallic Scale The Summit with generally longer and more expansive songs, and you’re in the ballpark of An Abstract Existence. Listen for yourself above and be wowed.

Seems like this is the trend at the moment; talented musicians from fairly acclaimed bands writing solos albums in their down time, and this case, I can certainly say I’m all for it!

Recently we’ve seen Evan Brewer of The Faceless (thumbs up) and Francesco Artusato of All Shall Perish (thumbs down), but now it’s the turn of Scale The Summit‘s Chris Letchford, who was recently voted #24 on Metalsucks’ recent countdown of the top modern metal guitarists. I was giving The Collective a cursory re-listen last night, and it still fills me with the same warm fuzzy feeling as when it was first released; the lush compositions and sweeping solos as awesome as I remember them.

Revealed in an interview with Ryan’s Rock Show, and departing from the STS sound, however, this effort will be a jazz-inspired number, meaning we can probably expect some more off-kilter time signatures, and perhaps a woodwind instrument or two? Either way, I’ve enjoyed much of the dude’s work before, so colour me excited for this.

That being said, the band are currently on the road with the Slaughter Survivor’s Tour, and Letchford revealed in the same interview that this nugget came from after that they’ll also be on a headline touring run with Elitist right after, so this won’t even be laid down until the end of the year most likely. Still, something to look forward to, no?

Cheers to Vince at Metalsucks for cherry-picking this out. In the meantime, here’s Chris playing “Glacial Planet” from Scale the Summit’s old record, Carving Desert Canyons:
