According to an announcement on their official website, East Of The Wall will be entering the studio on May 8th to record their next full-length, The Apologist. The band will be working with Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Rosetta, Pelican), and the album is currently slated for a fall release. Also, here’s the tentative track listing:

“False Build”
“Naif”
“Linear Failure”
“My Favorite Society Guy”
“Precious Memories”
“The Apologist”
“Running Tab of Sweetness”
“Horseback Riding In A Bicycle World”
“A Functional Tumor”
“Nurser of Small Hurts”
“Whiskey Sipper”
“Underachiever”

This is very exciting news for various reasons. For one, it’s only been 8 months since they released Ressentiment, which was superb, so the fact that we have another album on the way so soon is awesome. Also, we can expect a different sound from this album because the current East Of The Wall was formed by two different bands (Biclops and the old East Of The Wall) coming together, and most of the material on Ressentiment was written by Biclops. This explains why they’re able to come out with a new album so soon, and it’ll be very interesting to hear what The Apologist sounds like with them all working together on it. Get excited!

Holy cannoli! Today I was running naked through the fields of the internet and I came across the website gigposters.com. Why, in my quarter century of life, have I not come across this site before? Seriously, I’ve been using the internet since I was like 8. Anyway, it’s pretty much the coolest website. The concept is exactly what the name would lead you to believe. There are so many beautiful posters on this site, and I’ve spent more of my day than I care to admit looking at them. I’ve compiled a couple of my favourite below.

As I was browsing though I started thinking, why don’t bands sell these posters at shows? Screw buying a t-shirt, if I was at a show and saw posters like these, silk screened on fine art paper? I would flip out. Take for instance the Muse poster below. I was at that show; I saw those bands play. If I had seen that poster for sale I would have bought it for sure, even though it’s not a great poster and it would have been madly overpriced.

The only time I can ever remember seeing a really well done poster at a show was when I saw Pelican a few years back. For some reason I bought a t-shirt instead for reasons that I can’t fathom. Oh the follies of our youth. Anyway, I’m keeping my post short this week because I’m working on some big things for my next series of articles. Enjoy my selections below.

Being a fan of not only heavy tunes, but also Adult Swim, I was more than pleased to see that they have joined forces, along with Scion A/V to provide us with a compilation of some of the heaviest bands out there in music today. The compilation consists of 16 rare and unreleased tracks from bands such as Torche, Isis, Pelican, Zoroaster, Black Tusk, Kylesa, Death Angel… and more.

Although Adult Swim is no stranger to metal music, already having a show completely based around it with Metalocalypse, and having many metal references spread throughout their vast lineup of shows, it’s cool to see they are keeping up with what bands are kicking ass out there and putting out a gnarly compilation.

And best of all… it’s FREE!! Just click the link and bask in the greatness that is Metal Swim

I’m a bit of a webcomic fan, and there is no doubt in my mind that when it comes to character development and addictiveness, no one does it better than Jeph Jacques’ Questionable Content, which stars Marten Reed (left in above pic) as he and his circle of friends… exist. It is seriously the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning; I roll over, turn off my alarm clock, and I check QC.

In the series, Marten is the guitarist in the instrumental post-metal band Deathmøle, which fans of Isis, Pelican, Cloudkicker, and Cult of Luna should enjoy. Much like Metalocalypse’s Dethklok, this virtual band releases music, and has released all of their work for free (which you can download here.)

In a surreal turn of events, I was actually able to get an interview with Marten. It wasn’t easy, and don’t ask me how, but I managed to make contact with him and ask him a few questions!

Deathmøle – Two Chord

Thank you for talking with me today. First thing’s first: introduce yourself!

Okay uh my name is Marten Reed and I play guitar in the band Deathmøle.

How long have you been playing guitar?

I started when I was like 14 and I am 24 now so about 10 years!

I mean no offense, but you seem to be the indie hipster type of guy, so what made you decide to be in a metal band like Deathmøle?

Well it sort of happened by accident, the other guys in the band with me when we were starting out (Amir [Bass] and Nat [Keyboard/Sonic Texturalist], Nat’s not in the band anymore since she broke up with Amir) were more into the metal stuff and I just kind of went along with it. And it turns out that playing metal is pretty fun! Especially now that we have an actual drummer.

On that subject, what music inspires you, metal or otherwise?

Oh most of the stuff I write is pretty Isisy or Pelicany I guess, then sometimes I’ll be playing a riff and Amir will be like “dude that is a total High on Fire riff if you speed it up!” So I speed it up! My girlfriend is actually way more into metal than I am, she’s all about Behemoth and Opeth and Deathspell Omega and all these other bands. I really like Gojira, those dudes write some great stuff and their drummer is CRAZY GOOD. But I listen to all sorts of things, mostly indie rock but some electronic things too. I guess I get most of my guitar inspiration from people like Hum or Failure or Isis, those guys were all really good at doing huge guitar sounds.

Lair of the Minotaur are one of those bands that are out there just to crush balls and provide us with the holy grail of metal, the riff. Yes, that thing a lot of bands seem to be lacking in lately. While a severe lack of ultimate riffage has been (well, not heard at least) scene about metal, Lair of the Minotaur put out a whole albums worth of face bashing, bone crushing sludge guitar and fuzz bass. A constant wall of sound is thrust upon you with the utmost ferocity, and never does it cease. Nothing on this album falls short of pure, over-the-top awesome.

With song titles like “Lets Kill These Motherfuckers” and “Riders of Skullhammer” and an album with a self titled track called “War Metal Battle Master” there’s no way you can take the lyrical themes and names of the band seriously, but damn the songs are good. From start to finish, this album just brings the super metal awesome silly double awesome triple metal that you can just bang your head to and not care. There isn’t a single dull moment here, and neither is there one on their previous releases. In layman’s, this is a purposely shallow album, but no one will ever care because the music is so fucking awesome.
