Black Metal is really awesome, but add some symphonic elements to it and it gets even better. Black metal, in essence, is known for its ability to go over the top musically and visually, and to be, in a sense, very epic. Enter Xanthochroid, a symphonic black metal band hailing from California, not the place you would expect USBM to come from. They claim to take influence from the likes of Wintersun, Emperor, Moonsorrow and Opeth and identify their sound as one that “combines many styles into a blackened cloud of legendary metal madness.” And while they may not be legendary, they are starting to show the world they are on the right path.

Yesterday we pointed you in the direction of Turisas‘ new album Stand Up And Fight streaming over at MySpace (of all places). If you like your folk metal with more progressive influences, then Moonsorrow‘s epic new album Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa is streaming at Record Shop X for a week only, so hop on that. It’s powerful stuff!

Technically the album is already out in Finland, but it doesn’t see an official UK release until March 21st on Spinefarm Records; totally another reason to celebrate Prog-Metal March! The US release is still pending, however. International releases are fucking dumb. At least you don’t have to resort to pirating it to hear it for free, right?

But there is nothing to fear, as you’re troops stand alongside you, prepared to fight and die, obeying any order you give them. As the enemy draws ever closer, you let out a mighty battle cry and begin to charge in to what will likely be, the battle of your lives.
