Wretched’s new album Son of Perdition creeped up on me, quite honestly. Death Metal is not my typical forte’ and I’ve been obsessed with Meshuggah most recently. That is until I heard Wretched’s new single ‘Repeat, The End Is Near’. This song quite effectively reignited my lust for blast beats and shreds, and I began spinning Beyond The Gate in anticipation of their new work. I thoroughly enjoyed their previous work, and since then my aural skills of all things heavy have matured. As a result, I found my-self enjoying Beyond The Gate more then when I had first listened to it. By this point my expectations had peaked high for Son Of Perdition.

And the prog community collectively lets out a sigh of relief.
Rush are at that stage of their career where they can take their time releasing new material but, for me, the wait for Clockwork Angels seems to have dragged since they first announced they were working on it way back in 2009. This is probably due to absolute cocktease that was the Caravan two track EP released last year, which was a left hook straight out of nowhere — showcasing some bands heaviest material to date. No mean feat when you consider that all three members are well into their fifties but if you have any doubts, just listen to that heavy, off-kilter groove that opens ‘BU2B‘.
For a site that loves prog, there’s an unfortunate lack of Rush‘s presence here, but fear not! I shall keep you all updated/whine incessantly in the near future as last night it was announced that they will be releasing their long awaited new album Clockwork Angels on the ridiculously spread out dates of May 23rd and 29th, for Japan and the US respectively. No mention yet of a release date for Europe, but I can only assume it will be just after that, maybe even early June. So, if you haven’t already, here’s your chance to listen to the guys that were making interesting, progressive and technical music when Meshuggah and Periphery were but a twinkle in a pierced condom wrapper. I’ve included a couple more choice tracks after the jump for your viewing entertainment.

“I’m the great leviathan; the insatiable colossus.”
A more fitting opening could not have been found for the year’s most highly anticipated record. Few bands are as important to the current state of extreme metal as Meshuggah. Their influence has exploded since 2008′s ObZen, with legions of bands catching onto their elastic guitar tone and complex syncopated rhythms. Devin Townsend said it best during ‘Planet of the Apes’ from Deconstruction: ”While we all have lots of bands who influence still, we all rip off Meshuggah!” This has unfortunately lead some to question the band’s relevancy; how can Meshuggah stay interesting when the sound they pioneered is being done by everyone with Pod Farm and a 7-string? Are they forced to adapt and change their sound, or do they stick to their guns and refuse to give a shit either way?
Meshuggah‘s upcoming album Koloss is probably the highest anticipated record of the year so far, and we’ve had the privilege at Heavy Blog to hear it before release date. Hurray for press promotion! Our review goes up tomorrow, but I can tell you now that this record has quite a few stand-out tracks, and ‘Do Not Look Down’ is definitely one of my favorites. It has that killer groove that makes it catchy and Frederik’s guitar solo absolutely drives me nuts. Check out the lyric video for it above.
Koloss is due out March 27th on Nuclear Blast Records. If you care at all, our review will be available tomorrow at our usual reviewing time, so check back!

“The wait is over” proclaims the opening for this new trailer for Meshuggah‘s forthcoming album Koloss, which is isn’t technically true, but I’m sure you’ll forgive them some hubris, considering it is pretty god damn close.
Our promo actually dropped for us last yesterday, so we are busy laughing around the campfire, monocles on and “neener-neener” hats rammed firmly in place, so I guess for us this is true – however you can get excited by the news that the deluxe edition of the album will feature a ‘making of’ documentary, as well as some live footage from India.
A couple of bits of the new songs feature too; the heavier section is from penultimate track ‘Demiurge‘, whilst the twangy bit at the end (which let’s face it, sounds a lot like TesseracT or Uneven Structure in tone) is from album closer ‘The Last Vigil‘.
Other than that there’s not a lot new about this, but hey, not long now. Koloss is due out March 23rd in Europe and March 26th in America on Nuclear Blast. ARE YOU READY?!

Shattered Skies01. Beneath the Waves
02. Delusions
03. Attrition
04. Chasing After Time
05. Take the Beaten Path
06. This is What We Built
Anyone who has invested any time in the online music scene knows that the “djent” style is getting over-saturated at an alarming rate. New artists are popping up daily, and not all of them are as “different” as they claim to be. Dublin, Ireland’s Shattered Skies, however, are one to watch. Shattered Skies unique blend of sounds show hints of Meshuggah with the electronics and riff styling of Raunchy. Throw in a nice helping of guitar work that show cases solid Animals As Leaders influence along with vocalist Sean Murphy’s soaring cleans and you’ve got a band that deserves your attention.

It hasn’t been too long since Meshuggah had a hand in the leaking of their track ‘Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion‘ and we’re already catching another track from the band’s highly anticipated new album Koloss. ‘Do Not Look Down’ is available for streaming via the Soundcloud player below.
I for one think the new track is excellent. I really like the more sludgy grooves and organic sound the band has been going for on Koloss. The guitar solo is also an interesting change of pace from their usual work. Count me in on the Meshuggah bandwagon!
Koloss is now available for pre-order in an array of different options. Go give em a browse while you listen to the new grooves. The album is due out March 26th on Nuclear Blast Records.

I’ve been increasingly excited about death metal in the past year or so as my tastes have developed. Last year was a fantastic year for the genre, with superb albums out from Ulcerate, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Obscura, and Beyond Creation. This year seems to be even better, with releases from Beneath The Massacre‘s Incongruous is out now on Prosthetic, and it takes tech death to a whole new level of maddening wank. Yesterday, we got to hear a new song from France’s Gorod that got me all sorts of excited. Not to mention new Meshuggah and The Faceless albums pending release as well. All we need to do is get Necrophagist on their feet. A long shot, I know.
Today’s reason to get excited comes from Spawn of Possession‘s new track ‘Bodiless Sleeper,‘ which is streaming over at Guitar World. Needless to say, it rocks tits and other metaphorical body parts. Go give is a listen, lest you want to go unrocked, in which case; Y U NO?
Spawn of Possession’s Incurso is due out March 13th on Relapse Records. Get excited!
