Tool really know how to put on a show.

I don’t get to go to a lot of shows these days. Part of it is my location, sure; Toledo gets maybe a handful of good tours a year, and I only know of a couple of good local bands, but it’s also because I’m an old man and a responsible adult, with a full-time job and a wife and kid and house and whatnot. I’m not complaining, of course, but I do enjoy concerts a great deal, so I guess going to one every year or so makes it that much better. It helps when the bands playing end up being the likes of Between The Buried And Me and, in this case, the almighty Tool. For this show, I recruited my old concert-going buddy Raybob (not his given name, at least not fully, but I’ve called him that as long as I can remember, so we’ll roll with it), whom I hadn’t gotten to see in nearly a year, and we rolled out to the Huntington Center.

I hadn’t actually been to the Huntington Center before, even though I live in Toledo, mostly because I haven’t gone to any of the Toledo Walleyes‘ hockey games. From what I hear, the place is actually pretty successful as arenas go, which is nice. After paying ten bucks to park in a lot several blocks from the arena (it was fifteen a half-block closer – score!), we hoofed it to the arena and made it in good time. From there, we got in with little hassle and headed up the stairs to the second level. After wandering the entire perimeter because we misread a sign, we discovered that the staircase to the top level was, in fact, right behind us where we had first come up to the floor, and feeling a bit silly we climbed once more.

So I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but a lot of awesome tours have been announced and hinted at over the past two weeks. It seems like every awesome band is getting buddy-buddy with another awesome band and trekking through North America together. The only thing I have to complain about is…none of them are coming near me.  Which sucks, but honestly I can live with not going because knowing that metal fans will have such a wide array of awesome shows to go to is enough to make me happy. Well, kind of.

Anywho, as it says up top Intronaut have just announced a small selection of shows with openers Black Tusk and East of the Wall. Now there’s only a handful of dates, but damn does that line-up sound nice. If I had to choose I think this tour would be the one I wound up going to…you know, if it were anywhere near me. Sigh.

[EDIT - EOTW and Black Tusk will be playing more shows without Intronaut. Full run of dates after the jump!]

With winter approaching and the end of the year in sight, new releases are beginning to slow to crawl with only a few significant releases yet to see the light of day before the calender turns. This could be due to a number of reasons from holiday downtime to fewer available resources, but the infamously DIY Bay Area blackened progressive metal band Cormorant‘s late entry for the year will no doubt benefit them, as their sophomore album Dwellings will no doubt go down as the last great album of 2011.

The band formerly known tentatively as Bewilderbiest have settled upon the name Bereft for all future endeavours. If you missed the last time we mentioned them – or are merely too lazy to click through the link – the band is one of those collaborative efforts from members of other well-known bands. It features Sacha Dunable  of Intronaut and Graviton, Derek Donley of National Sunday Law and also of Graviton, Charles Elliott of Abysmal Dawn and Derek Rydquist who quit The Faceless earlier this year – an announcement that suspiciously coincided with the announcement of this project…

Things are certainly moving forward, and the band have released their first song “Withered Efflorescence“ via their Facebook page for the price of one ‘like’. Standard.

Vocalist/guitarist Charles Elliot had this to say about the song:

“This will give everyone a taste of what this band is about; dark, depressing, doom. Definitely different from what we do in our usual bands. It’s heavy as hell and we’re all really proud how the record and collaboration came out, and we hope people feel the same way.

On this particular track Sacha and Derek D. worked together on the music while Derek R. and I worked on the lyrics. I’ve always envisioned vocal tradeoffs with Sacha on this one, ever since the demo he sent me years ago, so that’s what you hear on the chorus.

This project has been on the back burner since 2008, so we hope people enjoy finally listening to it as much as we do. Come check out our first show ever at The Handbag Factory this month in Los Angeles!”

If you’re interested and in the area, the band will be playing their first ever show at the Handbag Factory in L.A. on September 30th.

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then a relatively new and unknown band or project comes along that blows me away on first listen. More often than not, you’ll hear about it immediately. Today is one of those days. Brace yourself for Bispora.

Bispora is a near perfect hodgepodge of just about every prog metal band that dominates my listening. Throughout the course of The Cycle, I picked out bits of Between the Buried and Me, Tool, Cynic, Intronaut, Meshuggah, Periphery, etc—and it’s all so seamless that songs feel like actual unique songs instead of a series of ripoffs strewn about under an umbrella. Bispora seriously pulls this off with apparent ease, and it’s unbelievable how well the band excels in incorporating these influences into their own sound.

The Cycle is a free download, so there’s no good reason why you won’t be listening to this nonstop for the rest of the day. Stream it below:

Download The Cycle by clicking through the above Bandcamp player or via Mediafire.

As you may have caught on Metalsucks yesterday afternoon (damn you Vince and your industry connections!), Heavy Blog wank-bank material Last Chance To Reason have recently been playing minus guitarist Thomas Waterhouse and keyboard player Brian Palmer on their current tour supporting Animals as Leaders, Intronaut, Dead Letter Circus and The Faceless‘s Evan Brewer.

A bit of digging on their part revealed that that’s because both dudes have left the band, eliciting the following response:

Hello Everyone,

First off we want to thank everyone who has come out to the shows this summer and making this the best year worth of touring we have ever done. The Animals as Leaders tour has been a truly surreal experience, so again thank you to all who came out to share that with us, we are all beyond stoked to be a part of it. We love all of the bands and all of you.

Sometimes, successful hard rock bands can say things that are so outrageously stupid that I don’t even know where to begin to dissect their thought process. Here’s an excerpt from an interview that Disturbed frontman David Draiman gave during an interview with Billboard magazine regarding their hiatus:

“Many of those reasons are personal reasons, and many of those reasons have to do with the state of the music industry in general and the demise of hard rock and metal right now,” Draiman, who’s getting married in September, explains. “The industry is still in a state of reformation; it is on the verge of collapse, in my opinion. It’s a frightening time, and I think after 10 to 12 years straight of touring it’s just a good time for Disturbed to go away for awhile and wait for the Phoenix to rise from the ashes.”

Say what? “The demise of hard rock and metal”?! Sales for their most recent album and tour must have been disappointing. It’s hard to take a world-famous frontman whining about the state of the “industry” when bands with not even half of their fanbase size are flourishing now more than ever. Animals as Leaders‘ most recent headlining tour with Intronaut, Last Chance To Reason, Dead Letter Circus, and Evan Brewer sold out a handful of their shows, and so has Periphery‘s headlining tour in Australia. Granted, it’s not like AAL and Periphery are playing huge arena shows and practicing choreography like Disturbed are, which leads me to believe that David Draiman thinks Disturbed are too good to scale back operations. It’s either all or nothing?!

It’s a fact: the music industry is changing whether anyone likes it or not. Digital downloads are available at a few keystrokes, and people just don’t seem to feel the need to buy music anymore. The fact that Disturbed is bailing out instead of meeting the demands of the market leads me to believe that they’re in it for all the wrong reasons. Does the fact that they’ll never be able to make as much money off of anything they’ll ever write or have written since The Sickness bother them so much that they’re putting down their instruments? It certainly seems that way.

I’d be willing to bet that fans of underground music would be more willing to splurge on ticket sales, merch, and music than fans of mainstream rock music. There are much more dedicated fans putting themselves into a metal culture and lifestyle than any odd person who enjoys a Disturbed song when it comes on the radio. With this in mind, I’m going to take it with a grain of salt when the frontman of one of the highest grossing (so-called) “metal” acts out there says that metal is in demise, when it’s certainly more popular than it EVER was thanks to the growth of technology and the internet, where finding better music is easier than it used to be. Just because people don’t seem to care about Disturbed as much as they used to doesn’t mean the whole genre is in the shitter.

So yeah, maybe the whole major label “super rock star” cliche is done and over with, and Disturbed’s collective ego can’t take it. However, the real metal artists who put their time and effort into something real and ultimately humble and touring without the expectation that they’re going to be on the radio are still doing quite well. It’s not metal that’s in demise, it’s bands like Disturbed who are in trouble if they can’t adapt, and judging by the hiatus, it seems like they just can’t. If that’s the case, then ultimately, nothing of value was lost.

Animals As Leaders‘ headlining tour is now underway and they’ve been selling out venues left and right, and with a bill like this one (Intronaut, Last Chance To Reason, Dead Letter Circus, Evan Brewer), it’s not hard to imagine why. The prog nerds are out in full force, so if you’re going to see an upcoming date, get your tickets soon. If you don’t, you’re likely to miss out on one of the best live acts I’ve ever witnessed perform a brand new song in the flesh. You can watch the above video all you want, but it just won’t be the same as seeing and feeling the music in person, which is certainly a mindblowing experience if there ever was one. Besides, if you keep watching this video, you’ll end up hurting your neck.

The new Animals as Leaders is shaping up to be fantastic, if the new song is any indication. Hopefully we’ll hear this excellent jam in its studio form by the end of the year!

Our much beloved prog nerds Last Chance To Reason have debuted their new music video for “Upload Complete” yesterday at Metalsucks. It’s a pretty cool video featuring performance shots of the band (peep the The Binary Code, The Contortionist and The Schoenberg Automaton t-shirts being rocked) and some video of their video game.

Level 2 has been out for some time, and it is one of the best releases of the year. You’ve got to hear the album if you haven’t already; it’s a progressive metal concept album about sci-fi warfare going on inside of your computer. Give it a spin and catch them on tour with Animals as Leaders, Intronaut, and Evan Brewer starting TODAY.

This summer’s shaping up to be a pretty good one, all things considered. We have that Slaughter Survivors tour coming up with Conducting From The Grave, The Contortionist, and some other cool bands that we’re dying to get tour dates for and now Animals Leaders are going on a national headline tour with Intronaut, Dead Letter Circus, Last Chance To Reason, and Evan Brewer. The first batch of dates have been released for the AAL tour, and it’s shaping up to be pretty decent:

07/07 San Diego, CA – Soma
07/08 Anaheim, CA – Chain Reaction
07/10 West Hollywood, CA – Key Club
07/11 Scottsdale, AZ – Martini Ranch
07/13 Colorado Springs, CO – Black Sheep
07/14 Wichita, KS – The Oz
07/15 Des Moines, IA – Vaudeville Mews
07/16 Joliet, IL – Mojoes
07/17 Grand Rapids, MI – The Intersection
07/18 Buffalo, NY – Mohawk Place
07/19 Farmingdale, NY – Crazy Donkey
07/20 Albany, NY – Northern Lights

I can only assume the 2nd half of the tour will hit the East and Midwest a bit more—at least I hope so. Despite being new signings to Sumerian Records, which is a sign of impending constant touring, Dead Letter Circus are Australian; They probably won’t be able to make it over here that often, and I’d like to see them before they head back home. I’d also like to see how Evan Brewer would perform live—since his upcoming solo album is entirely bass, how will it translate through a live setting? Will it be just him noodling around on bass? It’d be cool to see, and I’m sure the type of metal fan that would enjoy a show like this would find it to be interesting, especially if he plays with two basses. The whole lineup is great, and Animals as Leaders put on one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen.

More dates when we get em! Cross your fingers!
