What I like about Periphery is that they’re very tech savvy and are fairly open with their fans about the goings on of the band and their work on the new record, so every other day or so it seems we’re getting little bits of new material and studio antics. One of the latest updates comes in the way of Periphery newcomer Mark Holcomb tracking guitar. It would appear that since his recent inclusion into the Periphery ranks has resulted in the absorption of Haunted Shores material. The above video shows Mark recording a riff from HS demo track “Scarlet.” Interesting! I wonder if any more of HS’s backlog of material will make the jump to Periphery. What does this mean for HS in general?

After the jump, you can check out guitarist Jake Bowen’s work on creating electronic interludes for the new record, as well as a quick listen at Spencer tracking vocals while MC Jake gives us a run down of the new album.

Periphery Now In Studio!

Periphery‘s self-titled debut record was hands-down my favorite record from last year. Since then, much has happened in the Periphery camp, losing guitarist Alex Bois and bassist Tom Murphy and gaining Haunted Shores‘ Mark Holcomb and currently-temp bass player Adam “Nolly” Getgood of Red Seas Fire, both of whom will be taking part in the production of the upcoming Periphery records, one of which is titled Juggernaut. A lot has happened to me as well in terms of taste, so will Juggernaut end up as a year-end favorite for 2012? I certainly hope so!

The band have put out a couple of quick studio updates. Here’s some neat tidbits of what we know so far:

  • Nolly is tracking bass (below) and co-producing the record with Misha
  • They’re tracking live drums
  • That’s it.

NEAT. I leave you with Nolly making total destroy.

Misha and Mark (via Mayones Guitars)

Ever since the departure of “arms of steel” Alex Bois from Periphery, Haunted Shores guitarist Mark Holcomb has been on tour with the group as a fill in. We all knew where this was going to lead, as Mark and Periphery have been friends and collaborators for years. Finally, it is official — Mark Holcomb is now a full member of Periphery. Great success!

Here’s an array of quotes!

Misha Mansoor states: “We are happy to announce that Mark Holcomb (Haunted Shores) will be joining the Periphery ranks as a full time guitarist! He toured with with us our headlining run of Australia, our Frak The Gods US headliner and our 2 shows opening for Dream Theater, and we feel that we have found a perfect fit for us both live and in the studio. We are extremely excited to have him on board, and cant wait to show you all the cool new music we have been working on together! Since we made arrangements for the tour before Mark was inducted, our good friend Nolly (Red Seas Fire) will be filling in on the European tour opening for Dream Theater. However that will be the last tour we do with a fill-in guitarist, as Mark will join on full time after that!”

Thomas Murphy (bass) states: “The most important thing about a band is the chemistry between its members. We’ve all known Mark for years and are very proud to announce him as our newest member. Not only is he an amazing writer and guitarist, but also an amazing person. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the band now that he has joined.”

Mark Holcomb further comments: “I couldn’t be more excited as not only have these guys been great friends of mine for a long time, but I consider every last one of them musical siblings in a sense. Each of us brings something different to the table and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish.”

If for some reason you are not familiar with Mark’s body of work and have some sort of ill-placed doubts, behold:

Perfect fit for Periphery. They couldn’t have found a better replacement for Alex! So congrats go out to Mark; hope you kill it out there!

After the jump, check out the tour dates for their 2012 tour with Dream Theater!

This weekend, after an intimate show in Milton Keynes, UK, rumor spread like wildfire that Daniel Tompkins has left Tesseract — with Sky Eats Airplane, Of Man Not Of Machine vocalist Elliot Coleman as his replacement. This story is more than just rumor, it seems. It’s quite likely that it’s the real deal, with unofficial confirmations from several sources, including the following video:

What’s even more bizarre is that Dan is said to have left the band after being offered to join a pop band. I must say, as a huge fan of Tesseract, this is a huge disappointment. One has got to be one of my favorite releases this year, and Dan’s vocals just MADE that album for me, with his passionate delivery and haunting vocal melodies. His performance on the record continues to give me chills to this day, so the band’s loss is a great one.

I also can’t say I’m a fan of Elliot Coleman (I thought negatively of Sky Eats Airplane’s latest offering last year, but OMNOM has always been pretty good), so I’m curious as to if he’d be able to live up to such a high bar and fit in as well as Dan did with their sound. But then again, the dudes in Tesseract know what they’re going for better than some asshole on the internet, so obviously they think it will work out. Hopefully it does! I’d love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

An official release on the matter will be made tomorrow by Century Media. We’ll be sure to follow up.

Here’s further examples of Elliot Coleman’s vocal work in songs with Haunted Shores and OMNOM (after the jump). What do you think?

Haunted Shores, brainchild of guitar wizard Mark Holcomb with production duties handled by Misha Mansor of Periphery, posted an update on Wednesday that we unfortunately missed, but was picked up by our good friends at Got-Djent.com, in which Mark enlightens us on the recent silence from the HS camp.

You might remember the split EP Haunted Shores released with Cyclamen just over a year ago, which featured ex-Periphery vocalist Chris Baretto. Baretto has since moved on, and the original plan was to use a different vocalist for each track on the upcoming album, but apparently things have changed on that front:

Greetings everyone,

Mark here - just wanted to give a quick update on the current state of Haunted Shores and mainly why you haven’t heard anything from us in the past couple months. For a period of time recording of the debut full-length was halted completely; the reason for this being that we’ve been on a bit of a hiatus for the past several months - Misha has been 100% tied up with multiple Periphery tours and recording and has had basically zero time for anything else, and I have been going through some personal issues in my life which I’d rather not discuss at this point. I ask that you please leave it that but respectfully understand that these issues are outside of anything HS-related. I’d also like to thank any and all of you for your patience with the waiting. Oh, the waiting. I do feel very bad for prolonging the wait so long – and I’m incredibly grateful to all of you who still listen to the songs after all this.

Remember Vestascension? Of course you do! They’re the prog rock band that plans on releasing a new song every month this year! Last month, the band released their first song “Evolutory” to strong reception. “Lifoliage” continues the trend of awesome “dream rock,” with guest solos by Periphery‘s Jake Bowen and Haunted Shores‘ Mark Holcomb. You can listen to the song below. Click through to Bandcamp to download the song for free (or whatever you’re willing to give.)

Stay tuned to Vestascension’s Facebook for a reminder of a free song every month!

A new Haunted Shores song featuring Elliot Coleman of Sky Eats Airplane has made its debut on MySpace. I’m not quite sure what the title is supposed to mean, but the song is alright! I’ve never been much on Sky Eats Airplane, so I didn’t really expect the song to stick with me, but it’s not a bad song. It’s definitely growing on me, that’s for sure.

If you didn’t know, Haunted Shores (featuring Mark Holcomb and Misha Mansoor) are working on a new album featuring an array of guest vocalists. It’s shaping up to be a pretty big release! Check out “My The Man” featuring Elliot Coleman as well as “Passenger” featuring Periphery‘s Spencer Sotelo right here.

So apparently Chris Baretto quit Haunted Shores, making the project an instrumental duo featuring Mark Holcomb and Misha Mansoor with a revolving door of guest vocalists to appear on the upcoming album. The list so far includes quite a few people that are to be obviously expected. Here’s the list so far:

Casey Sabol (Ex-Periphery)

Spencer Sotelo (Periphery)

Jesse Leach (ex-Killswitch Engage, Empire Shall Fall)

Daniel Tompkins (Tesseract)

Elliot Coleman (Sky Eats Airplane)

Greg Pope (Monuments)

Scott Quigley (This Time It’s War)

Patrick Purves (Life on Repeat)

Ryan Devlin (Corellia)

Javi Perera

There are a couple of more to be announced. Some vocalists are expected to do a couple of songs, with some songs featuring multiple vocalists.

This weekend, Haunted Shores gave a preview of the new material complete with vocals in the way of “Passenger,” featuring Spencer Sotelo. The song is simply awesome and shows Spencer’s growth as a vocalist since Periphery‘s debut dropped. The difference is noticeable! This will be a great release for sure.

Check out “Passenger” via MySpace. I’m excited!

Cyclamen – Senjyu

06. With our Hands
07. Grand Annihilation
08. Devoid
09. Hellrise

12. Full Moon Night

[Independent | 10/25/10]

Hayato Imanishi doesn’t like being pigeon-holed. Cyclamen‘s EP catalog prior to the debut album Senjyu featured SikTh-inspired djenty metalcore thrown alongside Envy-like post-rock ambiance and melodies, often through the course of the same song. While this “post-djent” styling is still a player on Senjyu, things are not how you would expect. If you come into Senjyu expecting some sort of SikTh revival, you’re going to be disappointed. Senjyu is a diverse and dynamic album which pulls musical elements across multiple genres, and if you’re an open-minded rock and metal fan, this should definitely provide for an interesting experience.

Good band, terrible photoshop

Friend For A Foe, the melodic djent band featuring ex-Periphery vocalist Chris Barretto (whom I hear is no longer in Haunted Shores?! The fuck?) has finally posted their first complete song, titled “Niacin”. The song is pretty catchy, so it’s worth checking out. You can stream and download “Niacin” (and other songs) over at SoundClick.
