We got an unofficial, lo-fi sneak peak of this interestingly-monikered song back in October when it was debuted on Buffalo party metal raconteurs Every Time I Die‘s tour in support of GWAR, but Epitaph Records have now put up an official stream of the song – and it only confirms my speculation that the new album is going to be all kinds of bitching.

Underwater Bimbos From Outer Space‘, as it is called, is accompanied by a slightly NSFW video (depending on your viewpoint) directed by frontman Keith Buckley. People with odd injuries and maladies and on fire for unknown reasons an’ that, innit, interspersed with performance shots.

The video ends with the album’s title: Ex-Lives, and Epitaph have also revealed that it will be released on March 6th. That’s really fucking soon. Shit yeah.

In an unfortunate turn of events it seems that vocalist Andy ‘Weedgrinder’ Horn and guitarist Nick ‘Nikropolis’ Poulos have parted ways with weed-obsessed, death metal merchants Cannabis Corpse. Despite this, the band will continue to play shows and release material as stated in this Lambgoat newspost.

Most importantly though, after the recent death of GWAR guitarist Cory Smooth, Cannabis Corpse were set to play the benefit show in his name scheduled for the 7th of January at the Canal Club in Richmond, Va. Thankfully, friend and local resident Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God has announced through his Twitter account that he plans to stand in on vocals for the show which should make for an interesting dynamic. All proceeds go directly to the Smoot family and guitars from both Municipal Waste and GWAR will be given away in a raffle. All I can say is that, if it was in any way viable for me to get to that show, I would but it looks like I just have to enjoy the highlight reel when it gets uploaded to YouTube. In the meantime, however, check out ‘Gateways To Inhalation‘ from the 2011 Cannabis Corpse album Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise posted above — it kills.

Whenever a musician in the industry passes away, it’s often assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it was as a result of drugs or alcohol (case and point: Jimmy Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold, Mike Star of Alice In Chains). The sad news that GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot – AKA Flattus Maximus – had died whilst on tour early last month didn’t feel like that though, even though he was only 34. GWAR have never seemed like a band that take themselves seriously enough to get involved in any of that crap, and as expected, it was something completely unrelated; namely a coronary artery thrombosis brought about by a pre-existing coronary artery disease.

Man that blows.

GWAR didn’t let up though – even performing sans masks one show – and have provided fitting tribute to their fallen brother by carrying on. Good on you guys.

A fund to raise money for Cory’s wife Jaime and unborn child can be found here, if you care to help out.

I’m gonna be completely honest with you folks; I’m not really a fan of Rammstein. Nothing against the band or their music, but more along my own tastes somehow preventing me from enjoying a whole record of theirs. It’s not their fault, and it’s not mine. Oh well. I am however, quite fond and appreciative of their infamous live act and stage presence. I’d see them in a heartbeat if I had the extra cash and an open night, that’s for sure. You’re guaranteed to be entertained, sort of like how you can go to a GWAR show and have a blast without enjoying the actual music, you know what I mean?

So Rammstein are coming back to America, which is pretty neat. I’m sure plenty of you folks care, so here are the dates:

04/20 Ft. Lauderdale, FL – BankAtlantic Center
04/21 Tampa, FL – St. Pete Times Forum
04/23 Atlanta, GA – Philips Arena
04/25 Baltimore, MD – 1st Mariner Arena
04/26 Philadelphia, PA – Wells Fargo Center
04/28 Uniondale, NY – Nassau Coliseum
04/29 Worcester, MA – DCU Center
05/01 Montreal, QC – Bell Centre
05/03 Cleveland, OH – Quicken Loans Arena
05/04 Chicago, IL – Allstate Arena
05/06 Detroit, MI – The Palace of Auburn Hills
05/08 Minneapolis, MN – Target Center
05/10 Winnipeg, MB – MTS Centre
05/13 Vancouver, BC – Rogers Arena
05/14 Tacoma, WA – Tacoma Dome
05/17 Anaheim, CA – Honda Center
05/18 Glendale, AZ – Jobing.com Arena
05/20 Denver, CO – Denver Coliseum
05/22 Dallas, TX – American Airlines Center
05/24 San Antonio, TX – AT&T Center
05/25 Houston, TX – Toyota Center

Nothing close to me, but that’s expected. I need to get out of Kentucky, man.

Rammstein will be touring in support of their upcoming greatest-hits release Made In Germany 1995-2011. That’ll be out December 6th via Vagrant Records.

Holy Catastrophies, Batman.

Despite my sort of flippant headline, the last 24 hours has been nuts, and not in a good way. First we got word of the tragic passing of GWAR guitarist Corey Smoot. The fates aren’t smiling on us right now apparently, as it doesn’t end there.

Polish death metal band Decapitated survived an emergency plane crash on their way back from their US headlining tour. Decapitated are no strangers to disaster, as a van crash in 2007 killed drummer Vitek and put vocalist Covan into a coma. Obviously, everyone is relieved to find out that everyone that was on the plane made it out just fine. I’d imagine the band are a bit shaken up, as they’ve cancelled two upcoming festival appearances.

Then today, Stray From The Path were in a traffic accident and flipped their van. From Sumerian Records’ facebook:

Stray From The Path have reportedly flipped their van in Wyoming while on tour with The Acacia Strain and Terror. The band is fine however their van, trailer and gear all look to be completely destroyed. We will give you more news and updates as soon as we hear. Please keep the band in your thoughts. Stay tuned for more information regarding the accident.

Ouch, that’s a massive hit to a small touring band like SFTP, who will have a hard time recouping the costs for transportation and gear. Hopefully they can get back on their feet and we’re all relieved they’re fine as well.

Hopefully this string of bad luck turns around. There are plenty of tours left in these final months of the year. Everyone out there, stay safe!

We don’t often get all serious round these parts, but when we do you know something’s gone down – and it really has.

This post’s title is basically the long and short of it, and there’s nothing much more to be said. GWAR‘s guitarist Cory Smoot was found dead as they prepared to cross the border into Canada as part of their Return Of The Maggot Tour with Every Time I Die and Ghoul. I’m sure they are all shocked and devastated.

We didn’t know him, and we don’t know what happened – in fact no-one does yet – but it has come as a complete surprise to everyone.

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot,  also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus.  Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing.  There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred.  At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans.  At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.  We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss.  A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

-Dave Brockie-

I’m sure I speak for all of us here in expressing our deepest sympathies to all affected.

I know Buffalo-based southern metal giants Every Time I Die‘s new album won’t be out for a while yet – early 2012 if memory serves – but that hasn’t stopped the band playing new material recently, including on their current run with GWAR and Ghoul on the classily-titled Return Of The Maggot Tour.

The track they’ve been playing – since the end of September at least – is titled “Underwater Bimbos From Outer Space“, and there have been a number of people capturing it on film, which we’ve compiled below for your perusal.

Despite them having lost bassist Josh Newton recently, I’m super stoked for this record and I’m pretty sure it’ll be an early contender for album of the year – ETID have never failed to disappoint me in the slightest, and you’d be well advised to wise up to them sooner rather than later.

As mentioned, they’re currently on tour with GWAR until November 27th, at which point they’ll be jetting over to the UK to headline the Rock Sound Riot Tour as it travels across Europe, and will be joined by Trash Talk, Defeater and Spycatcher. Cannot wait. Dates in the links, and more footage after the jump!

Operatic, triumphant, and out of its fucking mind. That’s the perfect short description of the highly anticipated “heavy” installment of Devin Townsend’s four-part album series released under the Devin Townsend Project name. This is an amalgamation of what we’ve come to expect from Devin over the years. Deconstruction is an adventurous look inside of Devin’s mind that is quirky, honest, and his best work since Ziltoid the Omniscient, if not the best work he’s ever done period.

As expected, Deconstruction is huge in every sense of the word. There’s so much going on in the mix at times that it’s dizzying. Devin spared no expense in making this record sound the best that it possibly can, hiring a full choir and orchestra that pushes the album into the realm of epic symphonic metal. The quirky symphonic overtones makes Deconstruction feel grandiose throughout, sounding like a pissed off Danny Elfman score. We normally shy away from lengthy track-by-track reviews here on Heavy Blog Is Heavy, but honestly, this album demands it.

OK, so Nader Sadek is a name I’ve been hearing quite a lot lately. Mostly due to the fact that the Egyptian born conceptual artist, who has previously collaborated with bands such as Mayhem and Sunn O))), has just released his first record In The Flesh (an album centered around the place that petroleum holds within society) and it contains contributions from a pretty stellar cast. The band is made up of Steve Tucker (ex-Morbid Angel) on vocals, Blasphemer (Mayhem) on guitar, Nick McMaster (Krallice) and Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) on drums and guest appearances include Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Destructhor (Morbid Angel) and Mike Lerner (Behold… The Arctopus). Quite the line up, ain’t it? Don’t worry, the music is pretty damn good too – check out the video for “Sulffur” below, it’s the second part in a three-part video being shot for the album.

Reminds me a little of each band involved really but I suppose primarily it sounds like early Morbid Angel with a few Mayhem inspired riffs and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. Anyway, you think that was good? Just wait till you see the video for the first part of the trilogy, “Nigredo In Necromance”!

MAJOR RAGING AT BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Nerd reference a-hoy!

So as you may know it’s actually Metal March, in which record companies and others join up to promote themselves through free samplers, etc. Seems fairly innocuous and inoffensive, right? WRONG. Seems ThrashMag.com is running a knock-out battle of the bands with 64 artists from Metal Blade, Sumerian Records, Nuclear Blast and Victory Records(!?). Little do they know that they are casually mining a fairly large ore of rage buried deep within me. Let me just list a few of the travesties that are occuring:

  • I don’t want to live in a world where As I Lay Dying are beating Behemoth
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Job For A Cowboy are beating The Ocean
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Asking Alexandria are beating Fellsilent
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Shai Halud are beating Gwar
  • I also don’t want to live in a world where A Day To Remember, Dr. Acula, Emmure and Aiden could even be considered kings of Metal March.

Yes, I know it’s a popularity contest but at least go over there and do the right thing, you have until the 18th before the first round ends, in return I’ll keep quiet about the whole Goatwhore and Between The Buried And Me thing.
