Eyehategod_Heavy Blog Is Heavy

While Eyehategod aren’t the normal sort of band that would go down well on Heavy Blog, it would be a disservice not to divert your attention to their brand new track ‘New Orleans Is The New Vietnam‘, which can be streamed at over at A389 Records’ Bandcamp page. The release is in conjunction with the label’s pressing of the track on 7″ vinyl, green to be precise, and is the first new studio recording from the band since their ‘odds and ends’ demo compilation from back in 2005.

Naturally, ‘New Orleans…‘ is the sort of downtuned sludge mayhem you’d expect for the band’s comeback, but it’s been far too long since we’ve heard guitarist Jimmy Bower’s riffs this crushing and ruthless, his work with Down notwithstanding. There’s a sort of weight to them that you can’t find in many other bands and it’s definitely the center point here. ‘New Orleans…’ will eventually be included on the bands upcoming studio album and while details are thin on the ground, what we’ve heard so far sounds promising.

How much enjoyment can you really get out of a track that lasts only 40 seconds? Well, a lot apparently. Because, minus the feedback drenched opening (Eyehategod would be proud), that’s all you really get from the newly released track from Full Of Hell. ‘Return To The Mines‘ is pulled from the bands upcoming split, set for an October release through Holy Roar Records, with Polish hardcore act Calm The Fire and features an appearance from none other than Mike Riley of Pulling Teeth. Needless to say, it’s ruthless and one of those songs that’s just the right length and leaves you reaching for the repeat button. So if you need a Monday morning pick-me-up… Look no further.

Huge thank you to the ever brilliant people over at American Aftermath for bringing this to my attention.

Sometimes listening to Torche is a lot like riding a bull. A bull that’s covered in sequins, ribbons and glitter. As the uplifting and upbeat rhythmic dance of ‘Letting Go‘ blares through the speakers, it’s infectious and playful nature is thrust to the forefront. However, you would do well to remember that this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing as it’s only as soon as ‘Kicking‘ swaggers through the gates with it’s fast tempo, colossal riffs and a healthy relationship with obtuse and odd time signatures that you start to remember that’s exactly what Torche does best — heavy.

When I was much younger, I had a friend who was a little bit ‘off’ — a genuinely nice guy through and through, but over the short time I knew him, he provided some of the more memorable and repressed parts of my childhood. One day, upon receiving a pen knife and his first round of responsibility, he turned to me with a wry grin and said:

Hey, do you wanna see something cool?

With no hesitation at all, he proceeded to dig the knife into his skin and carve out a wart that had chosen to adorn itself on his forearm. To be entirely fair, it was a pretty precise job considering how dull the blade was but the whole time I had my eyes fixated on the gruesome display out of some weird morbid curiosity. I’m not that squeamish, but a few moments later he held up his grisly flesh trophy and waves of nausea ran through my gut. Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds takes me back directly to that moment, dredging up that exact uneasy feeling I got from watching his gleeful self-mutilation.

Do you enjoy your music to be a hopeless black void of despair? Would you prefer it if every note dredged up all your most cringe-worthy moments and made you re-live them over and over? Remember that time you realised you’d failed at achieving all your dreams?

16 remembers and they’re making sludgey regret-core to soundtrack it just like Grandma used to. They’re an acquired taste, but for fans of Eyehategod, Cavity or even Iron Monkey they inject some much needed hopelessness into your life. The band is set to release their latest album Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds on the 24th of April through Relapse and the above lyrics video for ‘Her Little ‘Accident’‘ is the first new material released by the band since their 2009 outing Bridges To Burn. Despite the relatively short turn around (the band have released 6 full lengths  in 20 years), 16 have really upped their game and dabbled in some interesting time signatures alongside their signature misanthropic hatred and I look forward to seeing how the rest of the album stacks up.

It’s November the 11th, 2011. It’s around 5pm and I’m at Damnation Festival, killing time inbetween bands. I’m drunk. Naturally.

And then the in-house music shuts off and the lights go down. The smoke machines begin to work overtime, pushing out gallon upon gallon of dry ice into the already cloudy room. Where there was only murmurs , an intro-tape suddenly lurches into life with a dry vinyl hiss and mechanical screeching jostling for space. I’ve never before seen such a large group of people snap into such a relentless concentration but all eyes are fixed expectantly on the cloudy haze that was once a stage.

At this point the only thing separating this from some kind of psychological torture scenario is the few sources of light emanating from the candles on stage. The buzzing and hissing becomes more violent. A metronomic low pulse pushes to the forefront, testing the ear drums of everyone present. Minutes go by whilst the endless aural abuse continues before suddenly 4 silhouettes make their way onto the stage and face away from the crowd.

It pleases me to serve you

My first run in with All Pigs Must Die came about during a recent gig which involved them and Trap Them playing a ‘versus set’ where they would switch out every few songs and alternate periodically. With only low quality footage available online, it was doomed to only be documented with a hugely over driven sound that meant everything became a smear of distortion. So, in the end, both bands sounded extremely similar… Thankfully, due to the wonders of modern technology in being able to take a snapshot of a bands sound at any time (in this case, in the form of recent release God Is War) we can now all bear witness to the fact that in the studio both bands sound extremely similar…

R.I.P. Seth Putnam

Honestly, I have no real idea of what to say here. I mean the infamous Seth Putnam seemed like a guy who spent his entire life trying to get closer to death; with Anal Cunt he insulted anything and everything, he gave us a fairly comprehensive list of things that were ‘gay’ (including windchimes, Limp Bizkit, recycling, Anal Cunt fans and especially you) and he even lapsed into a coma after a suicide attempt in 2004. Despite this turn of events, Putnam still went on to perform ‘You’re In A Coma‘ and stated that being in a coma was ‘just as gay as the song I wrote’.

Putnam clearly had no boundaries but he represented something important in a music scene that essentially prides itself on pushing the envelope in every way. No one was safe from his scathing attacks and he seemed to thrive on pushing peoples buttons, but Putnam managed to make a respectable 15 year career out of it — a career that was as hilarious as it was sickening. He even collaborated with some great bands and musicians along the way such as Scott Hull, Eyehategod and even Pantera. Whether he really believed in what he was saying or it was all one big joke is left unanswered, but to the man who gave away a picture of him getting a blowjob while shooting up on heroin with the first 100 copies of his latest album:

Fuck you Seth Putnam.

May you rest in peace.

Hit up GG Allin in the the afterlife, you guys would probably get along.

On a more serious note, Seth Putnam left this world leaving behind friends and family. Regardless of your personal opinion of him, he was as human as you or I and so my condolences go out to them. Plus, he would have wanted people to talk shit about him, so do you really want to fall into that trap? While you decide, here’s “Recycling Is Gay” from I Like It When U Die:

- DL

[Editor's note: Be sure to check out Seth's Twitter page. If you can take a joke, it is the funniest thing you'll read today. It's a shame these obscene tirades are at an end. I'd wish him to rest in peace, but he'd probably call me a faggot for doing so; so enjoy the dirt nap, dickwad. - JR]

I’ve always thought metal and cooking make a great combo. Yeah sure, headbanging is incredibly dangerous whilst you’re trying to flambe your steak diane but isn’t that the point? IT’S MANLY. So by extension I love the Cooking Contaminated shows on MetalSucks and the lastest one with Chubbs from Javelina is amazing, so much bacon!

But more to the point, near the end of the video Chubbs talks about the upcoming Javelina record which I haven’t heard anything about anywhere else. Personally I thought Beasts Among Sheep was easily one of the better records of 2009 so I’ve been waiting patiently for the follow up and it looks like we may see it later this year. Also, a little bit of Youtube trawling found me this live video of a new song, ‘On Graves‘ from their recent tour with Eyehategod and, for lack of a better term, it rocks pretty hard.
