Seeing as it’s Dragonforce, they could have just renamed ‘Through The Fire And Flames‘.

Either way, I enjoy Dragonforce from time to time. It’s fun music that’s easy to listen to anytime and I don’t have a problem with that. I know by admitting that I’m essentially throwing any integrity I once had to the wind, but to be honest they’re one of the most fun live bands I’ve ever seen and I think I may even be in the double digits for the number of times I’ve caught them.

Anyway, enough airing of my dirty little secrets! The two Dragonforce songs premiered over the last few days – featuring new singer Marc Hudson – unsurprisingly sound exactly like every other song they’ve done! The above track ‘Last Fallen World‘ is by far the most interesting of the two, with Hudson proclaiming it to the be the ‘fastest, most extreme Dragonforce track ever’ and while it doesn’t exactly live up to that, it’s a pretty good example of the fast paced power metal that they do so well.

However, with this being their 5th album with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality I reckon it’ll be one hell of a trick if they pull off a truly amazing album that’s on par with Inhuman Rampage or Sonic Firestorm. My case in point is the other track released, ‘Cry Thunder’ is an unfortunately mid-tempo bore that will most likely be single material, more like a Blind Guardian b-side if nothing else.

Listen to ‘Cry Thunder‘ after the jump or don’t. I wouldn’t really blame you.

Yep, everyone’s ‘favourite’ power metal band, the idols of misguided fifteen year-olds everywhere, have resurfaced from the bog of eternal stench clutching a shiny new vocalist, one Marc Hudson from Oxford. The way they announced it (wordy, much?) made it seem like he was the winner of some competition, rather than the victim of some massive scam. Oh well. The aforementioned press release:

UK based metal heroes DRAGONFORCE have announced that their long search for a new vocalist is finally over. After entries from thousands of hopefuls across the globe, the band welcomes 23 year old Marc Hudson to the band to fill the boots left by ZP Theart, who parted ways with the band in March of last year.

“I’m really excited about being a part of the DragonForce family.” Says Marc. “It’s always been my dream to dedicate my life to making music. I’m going to bring all the power and emotion I can to the songs, and help make the killer new record the fans have been waiting for!”

Born in Oxford England, Marc was picked from the thousands of applications via a number of impressive video auditions and live performances, which left the rest of the band in no doubt that they’d found their man. Since the age of 16, Marc has been building his vocal skills gigging with bands in the UK underground scene, developing a powerful style with influences which include Bruce Dickinson, Michael Kiske and Sebastian Bach. Says founding member and guitarist Herman Li:

“After almost a year of searching around the globe, it’s great to be able to finally tell our fans the good news. Marc’s expressive and melodic vocals are sounding phenomenal on the new songs, adding another dimension to the DragonForce sound that I am sure all the fans will love.”

The band has been working on a new album since early 2010, recording in various studios in California, London and the South of France. The follow up to 2008’s hugely successful “Ultra Beatdown” album will be highly anticipated, with top 10 and top 20 chart positions all over the world and a Grammy Nomination in the United States setting the precedent. With Marc brought into the fold, the band is enjoying an injection of enthusiasm and hunger that sees DRAGONFORCE prepared to return more focused and determined than ever before.

“Everyone in the band is extremely excited about how the new material is shaping up.” continues Herman. “We haven’t felt this kind of energy in the band for a long time. We can’t wait to unleash the next DragonForce album later this year.”

The new album is expected to hit the shelves in September, with a full world tour to follow.

I was going to make a joke about the band having no soul and the irony of their new singer being ginger, but I honestly don’t care enough, and it’d be disrespectful to our ginger ninja bros everywhere, so I won’t. There’s a video of Hudson’s apparently impressive auditions after the jump. I honestly haven’t heard it, but that’s only partly because I’m at work right now…

[I've heard it, and it's about as generic as you could probably imagine out of power metal vocals such as these. Also, SO FAR AWAAAAAY - JR]

SO FAR AWAAAAAAY

Of all the ‘Band in 10 Seconds’ videos out there, this one is probably the most accurate. Here’s hoping their next vocalist is more creative.

Move over, Steel Panther

There’s a growing trend in stand-up comedy troupes out there that base their act on music performance, and Dragonforce seem to be cashing in by releasing a comedy album!

Entitled Twilight Dementia, Herman Li and crew perform their unique blend of power-comedy in a live environment where the fire is truly alive, including their sidesplitting hits, “Operation Ground and Pound,” “Where Dragons Rule,” and “Through the Fire and The Flames.”

Here’s the full track list:

Disc 1:

“Heroes of Our Time”
“Operation Ground and Pound”
“Reasons to Live”
“Fury of the Storm”
“Fields of Despair”
“Starfire”
“Soldiers of the Wasteland”

Disc 2

“My Spirit Will Go On”
“Where Dragons Rule”
“The Last Journey Home”
“Valley of the Damned”
“Strike of the Ninja”
“Through the Fire and Flames”

I don’t know what’s funnier, the fact that it took two discs or the fact that this album will exist at all. The punchline to this joke will be delivered September 14, via Roadrunner Records.

Forget Sudoku

You want a brain teaser? Take a peek at the picture below of the band Black Veil Brides.

one girl

I literally spent about a half an hour staring at the photo trying to find the girl. I still honestly don’t believe that there is only one girl in the photo. Yes, you heard me correctly, there is only one girl in this photo! I don’t fully understand the whole scene look that the kids are digging as of late but this is just too far. Even when I looked at Poison for the first time, I knew every single one of them were dudes. This, I still don’t believe! I even got my niece who is in the third grade next year, my mother who grew up when Zeppelin still toured, and my brother who’s favorite band when he was into metal was Drangonforce, and all of us agree there has to be at least two girls in this band, if not three.

I did some research on the band and each individual member and the one that is second from the right is a… dude. I know, I still can’t believe it. But that’s not what tripped my trigger on this photo. The one of the far left, who looks like a girl in my tenth grade French class, is a male!!!! Quoi? With that knowledge you can pretty much guess that the girl is the one with the sunglasses but I still don’t believe it. I haven’t done any drugs ever in my life so I know my mind isn’t playing tricks on me but com’ on! Which did you think was a girl?

“Exit Stage Thattaway!”

Silly named power metal band Dragonforce have parted ways with their silly named singer ZP Theart.

It is with great regret that Dragonforce announce a parting of the ways with singer ZP Theart. This is due to insurmountable differences of musical opinion but the rest of the band sincerely wishes ZP great success with his future projects.

Guitarist Herman Ri had this to say:

“‘We are rooking for a powerfur, merodic singer to write a new chapter of Dragonforce with us”

A man of few words.

Deciding to totally jump the gun, Dragonforce have also began writing their fifth studio album while looking for a new singer. You can apply for an audition here. Hopefully they are trolled thoroughly.

Maybe a new singer will maybe push them in a new direction. Perhaps they’ll even WRITE A NEW SONG. They’ve played the same one now for like ten years.

Get Ready For Some LULZ

What happens when the incredibly average pop stylings of Katy Perry meets incredibly average power metal? You get this gem which is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the original:

She fits right in, no?

The song was put together by a heavy metal fan by the name of Andy Xiong, putting the original vocal track by Katy and his own original instrumentation together, complete with guitar and keyboard solos. Apparently the internet metal community is loving this up right now, with the video getting over 6,500 21,000 hits in just a couple of days.

Hopefully he’ll do more power-pop mashups like this. Whatever he can come up with would surely beat the hell out of Dragonforce.

UPDATE: FIXED LINK. Download the mp3 here.
