Tag Archive: Dillinger Escape Plan

One of the most exciting new things to come about in this metal scene in the last couple of years has got to be Matt Halpern’s innovative service Bandhappy. If you haven’t heard our harping on the subject enough to know what its all about, it’s the first website that allows live music lessons to take place between professional musicians and fans. It won’t be long before you can take lessons on the instrument of your choice from some of the following names:

Teachers that have already signed on include Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders), Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean), Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies), Jeff Loomis (Nevermore), Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan), Mike Mowery (Outerloop MGMT), Chris Adler (Lamb of God), Willie Adler (Lamb of God), AJ Minette (The Human Abstract), Evan Brewer (The Faceless), Paul Waggoner (Between the Buried and Me), Rody Walker (Protest the Hero), Peter Wichers (Soilwork), Louis Cato (Marcus Miller Band), Spencer Sotelo (Periphery), and more.

I can’t stress the “and more” enough, because the possibilities are vast. Registration privileges for students and teachers begins tomorrow at 11 am EST, and the first lessons will begin on Monday, January 9th. Exciting! Above, you can watch a tutorial that displays the ins and outs of using the site as a student. After the jump you can watch a similar tutorial for being a teacher on Bandhappy. Get involved!

None of us were there due to a combination of no money/distance/work/we suck (and that’s just Dormition), but we have it on reliable authority that the New York stop of the Masto-Dillinger tour (with extra Red Fang!) on Saturday ruled hard. I’m hardly surprised; The Dillinger Escape Plan in particular are an intense live act, and they made their show even more awesome by inviting original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis onto the stage. Everyone familiar with this guy must have nostalgia’d* super hard.

Dimitri, who handled the duties on Dillinger’s album Calculating Infinity and before, and is now the frontman for Argonauts, came on stage half way through penultimate song ‘Sunshine The Werewolf‘, and proceeded to take the reins for closer ‘43% Burnt‘, on which of course he originally sang. His mic was a bit quiet, but I’m sure it sounded a lot better up close, and he seems to still have that banshee thing going on. Eesh!

As Axl of Metalsucks says, Argonauts should tour with Dillinger. Would be pretty cool no?

DO IT.

*[disclaimer: much like vacation, nostalgia not a verb]

As many of you will remember, Dillinger Escape Plan will be on tour with Mastodon on their North American tour to support The Hunter. Well, in and around that they’ve arranged some headlining shows of their own, including one date with the Red Fang boys, who are with them on the main tour. Peep the teaser video:

Dates are as follows.

10/25 Little Rock, AR – Downtown Music
10/26 Austin, TX – Emo’s East
10/27 Dallas, TX – The Door
10/29 Scottsdale, AZ – Martini Ranch
11/18 Pittsburgh, PA – Rex Theater (feat. Red Fang)

It actually took me an embarrassingly long time to notice that this new Dillinger Escape Plan video for “Gold Teeth On A Bum” was not just a studio over-dub of live footage. Apparently it’s some actually some high quality mixing of them actually performing live, and it’s damn good. In fact, it sounds suspiciously too good, like they played it live in the studio for an off-the-cuff feel and threw it over some live shots, but that seems an awful lot like a poser move to make, which is the exact opposite of how Dillinger operates—Greg would likely slaughter anyone who would suggest that they do such a thing. The choppy and sometimes out of sync editing doesn’t help, but at any rate, the quality of this is superb for a live recording.

With that in mind, I think that a Dillinger live DVD is about overdue. Someone make it happen!

Amon Amarth – Surtur Rising

Amon Amarth

Surtur Rising

01. War of the Gods
02. Tock’s Taunt-Loke’s Treachery Part II
03. Destroyer of the Universe
04. Slaves of Fear
05. Live Without Fear
06. The Last Stand of Frej
07. For Victory of Death
08. Wrath of the Norsemen
09. A Beast Am I
10. Doom Over Dead Man

[Metal Blade]
[3/29/2011]

Most of you out there probably already know what you think about Amon Amarth, and the Viking metal horde’s eighth album, Surtur Rising, will most likely do little to change that.  For me, Amon Amarth are a band you absolutely have to be in the mood for to fully appreciate, and if you’re not in the proper beard-stroking, circle-headbanging, village-pillaging, mead-swilling, epic-as-fuck-death-before-dishonor-warrior frame of mind, they are just a very good melodic death metal band.  BUT, when you are really in the mood for Amon Amarth, they are the best. band. EVER.

Seriously…

09. Infinite Sunset of the Sleepless Man
10. The Traitors’ March

[12/04/10]
[Self-Released]

So 2010 is over, but there are some albums floating around that ended up being ignored by trigger happy bloggers (much like myself) who were too focused on favorites of the year to pay any mind to the little guy. Despite the slow state of news and releases that December often brings, one new album in particular was unfortunately overshadowed in all the madness of holidays and year-end wrap ups. It’s a shame really, because this particular piece of work might have ended up on a list or two if we had caught it on time!

Amia Venera Landscape is an Italian six-piece post-hardcore outfit unlike any other. While we’ve heard bands like Devil Sold His Soul and As We Draw utilize a cutting-edge post-hardcore sound doused with flavors of ambient music and post metal, neither band manages to mix the two with this degree of success. The Long Procession is filled to the brim with Isis-esque soundscapes clashing against Dillinger Escape Plan levels of  ferocity and a Misery Signals sense of melody that is as unique as it is refreshing.

Thanks to the internet, the word “epic” has lost the meaning it used to hold. For those that don’t remember, it’s generally used for something of colossal proportions—something monumental or of considerable attributes. With that said, is epic a word I’d use as a fitting description for The Long Procession?

Yes. Yes it is.

Deathspell Omega – Paracletus

Deathspell Omega

Paracletus

01. Epiklesis I
02. Wings of Predation
03. Abscission
04. Dearth
05. Phosphene
06. Epiklesis II
07. Malconfort
08. Have You Held the Fevers
09.  Devouring Famine
10. Apokatastasis Panton

[11/22/10, Season of Mist]

If you’re not familiar with Deathspell Omega yet, don’t kick yourself-NOBODY is familiar with Deathspell Omega. The mysterious French band never plays live, has no website, and have only given a handful of interviews in their existence. They are not interested in merchandising, commercializing, or self-promotion of their avant-garde brand of black metal in any way. They don’t care if you know who they are, in fact, they probably prefer if you don’t know who they are. Their music is for the select few who seek them out. It is not ideal for mass consumption. This is a refreshing change in an era when “black metal” bands like, say Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, are very interested in visibility and sales-see their commercialized symphonic take on the Norwegian formula, their comical videos, and outrageous costumes. Hell, Dimmu’s Galder is on the back of my Decibel magazine this month trying to sell me the Peavey 6505 amp. Now, that is not exactly a sellout move, but it doesn’t help his “black metal mystique“, you know? Deathspell Omega have no such problem, they require the listener to focus entirely on the art itself and not the people who create the art.

Deftones have been popping up everywhere since their magnificent comeback in Diamond Eyes last year. Deftones have always been such an influential band to many genres, anywhere from hip hop to heavy metal, Deftones have their fingers in a lot of pies. Case in point: their upcoming tour with Dillinger Escape Plan proves that Deftones no doubt have the freedom to tour with pretty much anyone they want and still pull a huge crowd of fans. Having such a diverse fanbase is something few bands can accomplish.

And with that diverse fan base comes musicians from varying backgrounds. Take for example, these three covers that span a few genres. First up, the more obvious cover; War From A Harlot’s Mouth covering “Hexagram” from Deftones’ self titled album. The cover appeared on the bands iTunes exclusive deluxe version of their latest album MMX. Spot on delivery!

I didn’t discover Canada’s Starring Janet Leigh until after my mathcore phase had been reaching a decline. Even at that point, I found them to be very interesting; more intense than Dillinger Escape Plan yet not annoying like Psyopus were. They didn’t hit my radar until The Number Twelve Looks Like You disbanded and their phenomenal drummer Jon Karel joined the SJL lineup. Not long after, there was word of new material in the works. This was towards the end of last year/beginning of this year.

Then fuck all happened in 2010 from this band. Now there’s an explanation: they’re calling it quits—I guess? I bet you’re wondering, “why the uncertainty in your tone, Jimmy? A break up is a break up!” Not if the official statement has anything to do with it:

“Due to recent member changes and a drastic shift in our sound, we decided it was only fair that Starring Janet Leigh go out in style with one last kick at the can through our homeland. There are a lot of bands out there that keep the same name when they are clearly no longer the same band, and we’ve decided to take a different route than that. We all love what we did with Starring Janet Leigh over the years and are sincerely going to miss it. The new album in the making is taking a very different direction than the previous release, but we’re sure fans of Starring Janet Leigh and fans of progressive metal will love it! Thanks to everyone who supported Starring Janet Leigh the years, it means the world to us. Be sure to make it out to one of the final shows if you can, this tour is gonna be a BANGER!”
