What Heavy Blog Is Really Listening To – 7/29/16

For those who missed our last installment, We post biweekly updates covering what the staff at Heavy Blog have been spinning. Given the amount of time we spend on the site telling you about music that does not fall neatly into the confines of conventional “metal,” it should come as no surprise that many of us on staff have pretty eclectic tastes that range far outside of metal and heavy things. We can’t post about all of them at length here, but we can at least let you know what we’re actually listening to. For those that would like to participate as well (and please do) can drop a 3X3 in the comments, which can be made with tapmusic.netthrough your last.fm account, or create it manually with topsters.net. Also, consider these posts open threads to talk about pretty much anything music-related. We love hearing all of your thoughts on this stuff and love being able to nerd out along with all of you.

For Fans Of – Eyehategod

For Fans Of is a column that takes one very well-known and popular band that our writers and readers are fans of, and then our staff write about a small group of lesser-known bands that do similar things and who we think you all might like as well and give…

We Are Knuckle Dragger – Tit For Tat

Sometimes you just stumble upon a record that completely and utterly perplexes you. It doesn’t sit right, it doesn’t feel right, it doesn’t even sound right but yet you keep going back to it. You could listen to anything, there’s a plethora of tried and true albums that have served their purpose endlessly over the years, but there’s just something about it — some unknown quality that wants or needs you to understand it. So you keep going back and torturing yourself over it. But eventually, something clicks, ‘cold and unforgiving’ becomes ‘warm and familiar’ and those once strangers become the closest friends you’ve ever known.

Torche – Harmonicraft

Sometimes listening to Torche is a lot like riding a bull. A bull that’s covered in sequins, ribbons and glitter. As the uplifting and upbeat rhythmic dance of ‘Letting Go’ blares through the speakers, it’s infectious and playful nature is thrust to the forefront. However, you would do well to remember that this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing as it’s only as soon as ‘Kicking’ swaggers through the gates with it’s fast tempo, colossal riffs and a healthy relationship with obtuse and odd time signatures that you start to remember that’s exactly what Torche does best — heavy.

Hey! Listen To Whores!

Sometimes simple is better. Just look at the artwork for Whores debut EP Ruiner, it’s straight to the point and it reflects the music perfectly. A pissed-off pistol of hardcore and noise-rock exploding straight into your ear, much like if Harvey Milk or The Melvins decided to cut the experimental sections and instead…

A Post Made of Babies

Upon being shown this band, Made Out of Babies, I made the quickest attempt to check out more from them after hearing the track “Cooker” on the album The Ruiner. Nary a band comes by that is metal with a female vocalist, let alone one as jarring, and worthwhile as…
