For those who missed our last installment, We post biweekly updates covering what the staff at Heavy Blog have been spinning. Given the amount of time we spend on the site telling you about music that does not fall neatly into the confines of conventional “metal,” it should come as no surprise that many of us on staff have pretty eclectic tastes that range far outside of metal and heavy things. We can’t post about all of them at length here, but we can at least let you know what we’re actually listening to. I love hearing the influence of bands I already love in new music. Maybe The Cartographer weren't necessarily thinking of Fear Factory when they wrote "Vultures", but that's kind of what I'm getting. Taken from their Human Error EP released last year, we've got the video premiere for this groovy beast of a track. With consumer tastes in "proper" metal changing so rapidly, it's nice to have a band to remind people that certain sounds are always satisfying. It's groovy and it's heavy and it will damn well make you bang your head.
In 2015 we told you that Chaos Divine had the goods, and today we're lucky enough to speak with them. Starting off as something of a melodic death metal band, Chaos Divine have gradually evolved into the progressive/alternative rock sound which Australia has become famed for. We speak with them about their fantastic 2015 release Colliding Skies, their experiences with crowd funding, the Australian scene, what it's like being a band from the isolated west coast of the country and, of course, eggs.
Earlier this year, iD Software released the newest game in the storied Doom series, and despite negative reception to early builds of the game, the final product turned out to be the most entertaining and bad-ass shooter in years. According to the developers, the final build of the game was inspired by "Huge demons, fast movement, big fucking guns and metal" and it certainly shows. That design philosophy extends to the incredible soundtrack that goes a long way towards selling the whole aesthetic. Bringing back the talent of Australian composer Mick Gordon, who also did the soundtrack for the excellent Wolfenstein: The New Order and season one of Microsoft's rebooted Killer Instinct, Doom's soundtrack, officially (finally) released yesterday. It's over 2 hours of grooving metallic riffs and pounding industrial/electronic elements blended together so seamlessly you'll wonder why it hasn't ever been done this well before.

Ken Sorceron has never been content with just sitting still. The Phoenix to Olympia transplant is the only remaining founding member of black metal act Abigail Williams, and is prolific in not just the USBM scene, but a prominent figure in underground and extreme music at large in recent years thanks to frequent collaboration with Finnish record label Blood Music as their go-to mastering engineer --- with credits on releases from Emperor, Cloudkicker, and Perturbator alike --- as well as serving time in acts such as Aborted and Lord Mantis.
