The inbox provideth. Trust in the inbox and it shall show you the way. These are words I whisper to myself when listening to the 50th terrible promo of the day from the blog's email. I do it because, once in a while, it brings me something excellent. That's really my main path to small, unsigned bands who are doing interesting things in the spaces of metal and beyond. Take Morrow for example. This unknown band from Seattle wowed me with their take on post-rock, atmospheric black metal and progressive metal with their The Weight of These Feathers. It's an expansive and ambitious release, blending strings, furious guitars, impressive drumming, varied vocals from two vocalists and amazing, amazing (seriously it's fucking amazing) bass work. I'm absolutely ecstatic to premiere one of the best tracks from the album today, "Elysium I". Head on over below to get a taste for yourselves!

Maeth's Shrouded Mountain, released in 2016, was an excellent addition to the progressive doom milieu. It wove drippy guitars, overladen with distortion and overdrive, amazing flute segments and ambitious track and album structures into one bewildering whole. This is why it is my very distinct pleasure to premiere their next album today. It goes by the name of Whaling Village and is comprised of three incredible tracks which further cement Maeth as one of the more important voices in this mini-scene of progressive doom metal. This release doubles down on their sound, handing us a more refined and yet, somehow heavier and more oppressive, version of the Maeth sound. It is contradiction all but also harmonious and melodic in heart wrenching ways.

Editor’s note: Yes, it’s that time of the year again! While our own Album of the Year list is coming down the line, we have a ton of end of year content for you. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be exploring 2017 in various of ways: through curated summaries for specific genres, editorials on specific phenomena we found interesting and, of course, guest lists! This time around, we have one of the most exciting bands currently in operation: Dreadnought! Hailing from the by-now vaunted scene from Denver, Dreadnought traffic in the areas around doom metal, introducing influences from black metal, folk rock and progressive rock. Their albums are true monoliths of complexity and melody, with this year's A Wake in Sacred Waves denoting somewhat of a high water mark for any bands wishing to work in the space of experimental doom. Their list is as diverse as you would expect; from the jazz styling of none other than the legendary Thundercat, through the blackened wastes of Ruins of Beverast and all the way back to the off-kilter musings of Bjork, their list draws from as many directions as their music does.
