It's time to don your plate armor with one of our favorite black metal acts, Morke. If you haven't been paying attention you might be surprised, as Morke has changed quite a lot since We Are The River. Focusing more on the edge and grandiose delivery of the early days of black metal coupled with the fantastic (as in, "of fantasy") vibes of heavy and power metal. That transformation now reaches an apotheosis with "Coup D'oeil", a track that showcases exactly what Morke is about these days. Scroll down below to check it out!
Yes, thank you, and more please. I absolutely adore the drums on this, setting a kind of ponderous rhythm to the whole thing that does a lot of the heavy lifting in channeling those heavy metal/proto-doom vibes into the whole thing. Then, you have those absolutely bewitching guitar lines, utilizing old-school effects to get that scintillating, "baroque" tone that puts the "castle" in "castle metal". Throw in the great vocals, some chunky bass to tie everything down, and bursts of blast beats and furious tremolo picking to conjure everything into its final package. The end result is a track that is both epic and heavy, toying with the more flimsy, frilly sounds of fantasy inflected metal and meshing them up with black metal's "heavier" coldness.
