Summer is heating up, and the metal world is ready to go on an adventure. Whether it’s black metal mysticism, heavy metal quests, or folk metal tales, the vibe is a suit of armor and journeys to lands unknown.
Leading the charge is “castle metal” band Weald + Woe, who are set to release their third album via Fiadh Productions on July 4th. Combining folk, melodic black, trad, and prog metal, Far From the Light of Heaven is an aggressively existential gallop that challenges us to look inward and face the demons of the soul.
Streaming exclusively here on Heavy Blog, Weald + Woe’s latest single “Warchild” is one of the more contemplative tracks on the album. Leaning heavily into their medieval, melodic black metal core, “Warchild” reflects on the choices we make through stately rhythms punctuated by harsh screams and power metal-inspired riffs.
Guitarist and vocalist Jeff Young shared:
“Warchild is about reflection. When we look back at everything it took to get where we are in life, was it worth it? Did we do good? Did the end justify the means, or was the cost too high? Contrastingly, we cannot stop. We must move on at every cost. The alternative is stagnation and stagnation is tantamount to death. Reconciling the personal cost and material costs of our battles can be a grim undertaking.”
Summoning the energy of a quest and the darkness of inner turmoil. “Warchild” is both a battle hymn and tormented scream. The distant howls mimic our tortured inner dialogue, echoing across the unforgiving march of the drums…and life. Hard choices must be made, obstacles overcome — sometimes leading us to triumph, other times to ruin. In the worst cases, we’re forced to reckon with ourselves in the face of seeming success. “Warchild” captures these complex emotions with the signature mythical energy of Weald + Woe, representing another thrilling chapter on the road to Far From the Light of Heaven.
Pre-order Far From the Light of Heaven on Bandcamp before it drops on July 4th. Physical copies can be purchased from Fiadh Productions.
