As you know, I am a freak for microscenes, a group of bands located in a geographically similar area and making approximately the same kind of music. Over the last few years, I've been trying to work more and more with the growing microscene of progressive stoner metal that's been gathering force in Greece, the most famous example of which is Khirki. Another fantastic example of the style/location which we've mentioned on the blog before is Calyces and I am beyond excited to premiere a new track from them here! Mostly because it is so fucking good guys! I really can't stress how much of a step up this new track is from their already brilliant material. Go check out "Swirling Towards the Light" right now!
OK, so what gives? Did someone in the Calyces camp say "hey, you know that Eden guy? We should make a track especially for him!" The new single has everything I love about progressive stoner metal, to an even higher degree than the band's previous material. The track starts with this absolutely vicious, thrash-tinged riff but later on moves through agile and "open" sounds and ends up on an absolutely gorgeous, harmony led ambient section. It then, of course, returns to the main riff and ends on an absolutely epic note, the different melodies from the track joining to culminate in sweet excellence. Add in that powerful mix of clean and harsh vocals and you've got yourself a winner.
I really, really, really like this track and its energies. If it's any indication of the album, Fleshy Waves of Probability (what a title!) which drops on March 21st, we are in for a treat! Make sure to head on over here to pre-order it and thank the powers for microscenes!
P.S holy shit that album cover art!
