Like their heavy strain of psychedelic stoner rock, Deaf Lizard has been on a dark trip.
Formed in 2012 as an international collaboration across France and Germany, the group recorded an EP in 2016, only to see the release halted for years. Line-up changes further disrupted the band as members departed and others took on new roles, but when the dust settled in 2018, the reborn Deaf Lizard resumed touring and released their first album in 2020. Just as they finally saw some success and stability, however, the pandemic forced Deaf Lizard into hibernation.
Forced to regroup yet again, the band turned inward. The sophomore album, The Last Odyssey, is a fully self-produced effort that reflects Deaf Lizard’s twelve years of energetic live performances, near-catastrophic curveballs, and furious pursuit of stoned glory. The Last Odyssey will emerge on November 9th on Electric Valley Records.
Their latest single,“Independent Terror,” channels Deaf Lizard’s doomier influences into fuzzy grooves. Infectious stoner rock becomes infused with heavy psychedelic improvisations, seamlessly shifting from expansive, crushing riffs to earwormy jams. Deaf Lizard’s roots as a live act become evident through rolling instrumentals that feel of-the-moment without sprawling incoherently. Inspired by a not-too-distant doomsday, "Independent Terror" captures both the highs of adventuring into the unknown and the darkness of a post-apocalyptic world.
“Independent Terror” will be available on all platforms tomorrow, October 4th. Listen to the new single below and pre-order The Last Odyssey on Bandcamp before it drops on November 9th.
