It's been a good few weeks since I got the pleasure to premiere a track from a post-rock album that's really moved me. That's partly because I've found the sub-genre a bit lacking this year so far but also because I simply didn't have the opportunity to premiere anything from most of the releases I've loved from the genre. All of that's over though because today, I get to tell you about Din of Celestial Birds, one of my favorite new discoveries in the post-rock space. These guys are gearing up for the release of The Night Is For Dreamers, due on August 11th through two very good partners of the blog, A Cheery Wave (UK) and A Thousand Arms (US). "MMEC", the track and video we are premiering today comes to us from that album, and you can expect unfurling riffs, all the delay-laden guitars you can desire, and big, emotive crescendos. Let's get to it.
Part Nordic Giants melancholy, sleepmakeswaves granduer, and a whole lot of groove and impact go into making this track as good as it is. There's nothing necessarily wildly innovative here but all of the tropes of the sub-genre are executed to perfection, from the anguish-heavy lifecycle of the recurring main line of the track and all the way to the catharsis of the crescendo-centered elements which are added to it. The final moments of the track leave you with that good, breathless feeling that truly great post-rock has, that unique perspective of a journey travelled, paid for with the distance travelled itself. The fact that the measure here is in emotions rather than location is completely besides the point, even before you take in the transfigurative aesthetics of the music video which accompanies the song.
If you like what you hear, and the entire album is as good by the way, you should on over to the group's Bandcamp page to pre-order this release. I am beyond thrilled to have been given the opportunity to run this track; this album is fast becoming one of my favorite releases of the year. Don't sleep on it!
