The sad fact is that you’re probably going “Who?” upon reading that title since Vāmācāra remain incredibly underrated. That might be because they’ve only released one, relatively short, album in 2017, which we posted about on the blog two years ago. But it’s definitely not because of the quality of their music, since these guys present one of the more interesting fusions of black metal and stoner/doom/psychedelic/whatever you’d like to call it. And now, Vāmācāra are finally back (seriously, I refresh their Bandcamp once a month) with a new single off of their upcoming album, Cosmic Fires: The Enlightenment Reversed, which we are happy to premiere today. Scroll on down below for epic, fuzzy, and challenging metal.

Where do I even begin to describe this one? It starts off slowly enough, with a fuzzy, thick main riff that’s a pleasing amalgam of pronounced bass, incisive guitars, and pounding guitars. But every quickly the track transforms like so much elusive mercury in the alchemist’s beaker, infused with the progressive tendencies that make Vāmācāra so special. You start to hear influences from Middle-Eastern compositional tendencies, black metal vibes on the vocals, and an overall unique atmosphere which creep into the music. This is further elaborated upon near the end of the track with breakneck blast-beats, their underbelly suddenly laced with an instrument that might be a synth or might be a shrill brass instrument, until it only collapses through a cavernous scream and pregnant silence.

Comparisons to bands like Dodheimsgard or some of Ihsahn‘s work abound, but the fact remains that Vāmācāra have never sounded more unique and not quite describable as they have here. And that makes me very, very excited for the album. Click through on the Bandcamp link above to stay updated as the band near the release.
