Last year, we got to tell you about the heavy metal infused black of a one-man project from Vancouver called Snakeblade. The project’s music uses those heavy metal influences to inject a lot of momentum and energy into their black metal, creating a high octane, high speed version of it which harkens back to the days when the lines between thrash, death, and black metal weren’t as solid as they are today. Well, the project is now back, gearing up for A Song of Ice and Fire influenced album titled The Curse on October the 13th. We’re super happy to premiere a single from it right here, the epicly titled “Foul Sorcery of Flame and Shadow”. Head on down below for intense shrieks, murderous riffs, and all the fantasy black metal you need!
Oh baby, that’s the good stuff! For this album, Snakeblade picked up a session drummer to accompany them and it really shows; the blast-beats, the cymbals, everything bites harder and has a more organic feeling to it. The track itself continues the Snakeblade tradition of writing fast-paced, breakneck black metal, just this side of heavy metal. The initial riff on the track, which reigns the track for almost two minutes, is pure energy, fast and unapologetic. The high pitch shrieks which eventually come to accompany it perfectly encapsulate the high fantasy vibe of the track, before the track unwinds into more doomy territories near its end. Whichever sound it channels, it’s always heavy and direct, engaging the listener at every turn.
The Curse drops on October 13th (alongside some sick merch) and you can head on over to the project’s Bandcamp to pre-order it. Valar morghulis!
