It’s not uncommon that we at Heavy Blog cover the same tour more than once, but I had the ability to attend five shows of The Dillinger Escape Plan’s most recent tour, with the opportunity to photograph four of them! You may be thinking, “You’re out of your damn mind for seeing this tour five times!” And you’re right. However, it was bittersweet and absolutely worth it. The main reason why I hit the tour five times was because three of the October shows fell on my birthday weekend, and I decided to make a big to-do about it. The other two in November were also thankfully nearby. Moving on!
Now, we’re all aware that The Dillinger Escape Plan, one of the most prolific and important bands in the history of heavy music, are calling it quits, and leaving us with their swan song, Dissociation [review]. However, it wouldn’t be in their nature to not go out with a bang. For about seven weeks, they hit (almost) every corner of the U.S. to say their goodbyes. It’s no surprise that The Dillinger Escape Plan bring along supporting acts that aren’t always in the same vein, and this tour was no exception. The main support for this tour was Cult Leader, who released their debut album, Lightless Walk [review], last year via Deathwish, Inc. and O’Brother, who released Endless Light earlier this year via Triple Crown Records. For three separate legs of the tour, additional support consisted of Bent Knee, Entheos, and Car Bomb. Our coverage of this tour unfortunately does not consist of Entheos, but does include Bent Knee and Car Bomb. The first three shows were at Fête Music Hall in Providence, The Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie, and Webster Hall in Manhattan, with Bent Knee providing support for all three stops.
I want to talk about the New York City show for a moment. Out of the three shows that weekend, this show in particular was something special. The energy levels were astronomical, and was easily the best I’ve ever seen The Dillinger Escape Plan at. To get a glimpse of how insane this show was, New York City hardcore natives Candiria took a 5 minute video of the end of the show. The last two shows I attended were the last two shows of the tour, first one being at The Paramount in Huntington Long Island, and the last one at The Webster in Hartford, CT. At this point of the tour, Cult Leader opened the show, with Car Bomb following them. Regardless, seeing Car Bomb, who just released Meta [review], for the first time in a few years was great—and they are definitely better than ever.
To conclude, The Dillinger Escape Plan decimated the United States for roughly seven weeks, seeking to leave a musical crater in every state possible. They still have more touring plans coming up in 2017, like a three-day run in Canada this month, and then early January they fly over to the United Kingdom for a week, with support from Primitive Weapons and Ho99o9. The Dillinger Escape Plan may be ending, but it certainly isn’t over just yet.
I don’t think this giant tour was their last U.S. tour. Nothing is confirmed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the band plays their swansong in New Jersey area, since that’s where they started. Just a bit of wishful thinking for one last opportunity to see one of the greatest bands.
