I haven’t done one of these types of posts in a while. This is not out of sheer laziness or lack of enjoyment, but more due to the fact that recently not very many new bands have come out of the woodwork to make a lasting impression on me. However, that all changed yesterday when I heard of this band Facemeat. They are an avant-garde group from Australia who play a mix of Mr. Bungle, Hella, and Frank Zappa, which sounds insane enough. However, they do so with such ease and make it sound so fun that it makes me feel all giddy inside. You can listen to them below!
First of all, I really dig the progressive use of the brass section all over this record. Sometimes it gives the songs a sense of dissonance, and other times its right where it needs to be. It’s not incredibly overpowering, and almost feels like a jazz group just jamming out for around 40 minutes or so once the record is completely over. There’s also some really groovin’ parts on this record that resemble funk, but that is definitely an understatement, because these moments have so much else going on at the same time. It might seem very hard to listen to from the outset, but I can promise that if you invest your time and energy into this album, it will pay off in spades. The album is out now via Art As Catharsis, and you can pick it up at their Bandcamp!
