Formulas are double edged swords. On one hand, they serve to make an artist memorable and iconic. On the other, they can quickly grow stale, especially when established prior to any major release. Keeping this in mind, we approach the new single released by Marmozets, a band that has their own style before they have even released their debut album. Making their mark in a slew of festivals and explosive live performances, previous releases were aggressive combinations of brit-rock, math rock and anger. With this new single, ‘Captivate You’, one can discern a much more upbeat direction. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

I’m not saying this is bad. On the contrary, everything after the three minute mark is some of the best stuff we’ve heard from the band. But is this style, more muted both in musical energy and physical energy exhibited in the clip, indicative of the direction their debut album is going in? That would be a shame in my eyes as the release would mark more a break in their style and direction rather than a refining of previous sounds.

We’ll have to wait and see. The album doesn’t have a release date yet but was promised a 2014 release via Roadrunner Records.

Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
