While I wasn’t exactly smitten with Weedeater‘s latest release Jason… The Dragon, I fulfilled my own prophecy in that it hasn’t left regular rotation on my iPod. Especially the upbeat rawk grooves found in “Mancoon” and “Turkey Warlock“, both of which are contained in their brand new video premiered over at Brooklyn Vegan courtesy of Scion. It’s nothing mindblowing but this black and white homage to dodgy horror movies is worth a watch for two main reasons:

  • We finally get to find out what a Mancoon is! The clue was in the name though really…
  • Dixie Dave’s facial expressions are just hilarious.

It’s been four long years since Weedeater‘s previous album, God Luck And Good Speed; an album which I played the shit out of, to put it bluntly (no pun intended). I’ve always enjoyed the work of bassist Dixie in bands like Bongzilla and Hail! Hornet but God Luck… just blew everything out of the water; there were huge riffs in the guise of “Dirt Merchant” and the title track and even some completely welcome pure chill out in form of “Alone” and the instrumental “Willow“. So needless to say, my expectations were high for Jason… The Dragon—I was even a little unwilling to even try it just in case it didn’t live up to it’s predecessors. And obviously, I was right.

Good morning folks! Here’s a rundown of this week’s new releases, as always.

Arkhum – Anno Universum (Vendlus)
As Blood Runs Black – Instinct (Mediaskare)
Assaulter – Boundless (Metal Blade)
Blood Ceremony – Living With The Ancients (Rise Above)
Cannibal Corpse – Global Evisceration DVD (Metal Blade)
Deadlock – Bizarro World (Lifeforce)
Fell Voices – Untitled (Gilead)

Kvelertak – Kvelertak (The End)
Mastodon – Live At The Aragon DVD (Reprise)
Nekromantheon – Divinity of Death (Vendlus)

Rotten Sound – Cursed (Relapse)
Serenity – Death & Legacy (Napalm)
Trap Them – Darker Handcraft (Prosthetic)
Visons Of Atlantis – Delta (Napalm)
Weedeater – Jason..The Dragon (Southern Lord)

Kvelertak is finally seeing an official US release. It’s about time! If you haven’t heard this blackened party rock band, do it now; Chris gave the guys an exceptional review. Damien thinks that new Rotten Sound is one of the finer records available so far this year, which you should definitely get your hands on if you’re a fan of grind. Gein reviewed Deadlock back in January, pretty much to the tune of “it’s alright.” Apparently it just now saw a US release.

We should have reviews of the new Across The Sun, As Blood Runs Black, Trap Them, and Weedeater albums this week as well, so keep an eye out for those! Have a good one, folks!

Yep, or passports. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah shit.

Our favourite Norwegian hellraisers, who were due to join Weedeater‘s Jason the Dragon (ai see wut u did thar!) tour with Zoroaster tonight, had their passports and U.S. visas stolen RIGHT ON THE WAY TO THE FREAKING AIRPORT. If that ain’t the shittiest luck. This also means they missed their Scion Rock Festival appearance, which is a huge bummer.

Fingers crossed they’ll be able to make their SXSW appearance on March 18th, as that shit promises to be tight, or whatever the expression the cool kids are using these days is. It all depends on the competence and willingness of the relevant Norwegian authorities, and I guess the American authorities too.

In the meantime, continue to give them your support – their debut self-titled is awesome and is available in the States on March 15th!

BrooklynVegan are doing quite well for streaming new music this year, so they continue the trend by offering a new track ‘Mancoon’ from the new Weedeater album Jason… The Dragon. There’s no drastic change in their hazy sludge metal but this feels a little more upbeat, which is suprising considering all the shotgun related accidents as of late.

So head over to BrooklynVegan to have a listen and remember that their new album comes out March the 1st on Southern Lord Records.

Sometimes news comes my way about a band I don’t particularly care about, but it’s so hilarious I need to share. This is one of those times. Stoner/Sludge metal band Weedeater have postponed plans to record their new album because bassist/vocalist Dave Collins SHOT HIS FUCKING BIG TOE OFF. From Weedeater’s myspace:

“As most of you know, here in the Weedeater camp we pride ourselves on a long tradition of shooting our band in the proverbial foot right before we’re supposed to do something important. Whether it’s a big tour, a recording session, or whatever else we’re supposed to do, invariably we will find some way to try and thwart our grandiose plans. Well, it’s no different for this recording session, except that this time we really did shoot ourselves in the foot. In fact we regret to inform all of you that this weekend, Dixie Dave shot his big toe off whilst cleaning his favorite shotgun. Yup, that’s right. When reached for comment, Mr. Collins gave a quote that speaks for itself…‘It wasn’t my intention to shoot off my big toe. This really fucking sucks and the pain is unbearable.‘ Mr. Collin’s doctors have advised that he is to be bedridden for the next few weeks during his recovery. This will obviously affect the recording session (and the few surrounding shows in Jan/Feb), which will now have to be postponed until after the March/April ‘nine-toe’ tour. Said tour is still 100% on, however, so check back soon for updates on venues and exact dates. It looks like the support bands will be awesome and the band is really stoked to play this new material after touring for so many years on the same basic set. Yeah…we knew that too, sorry but we’re about to make good on it. And of course after all, we gotta keep workin’, like workin’ men do. Shooting your big toe off isn’t free, for fuck’s sake! So to re-cap…Keko sacrificed his pinkie for Down/Melvins, Shep broke his hand for Today is the Day, and now Dixie has generously offered up his big toe for Steve Albini to nibble on. Unless overtly fond of Limburger cheese and rotten flesh, Master Steve is advised to decline.”

Heh. I wonder if he was high when he shot himself? If so, it’s a mixed blessing in that sure, he shot himself, but the pain could have been MUCH worse.
