It looks like Heavy Blog’s favorite record label Basick Records are becoming more accessible. No, it’s not because they’ve stopped signing experimental/prog bands in favor of autotuned genericore, but because they’ve partnered up with Prosthetic Records and SONY’s RED Distribution to bring their catalog of music across the pond to North America!

Here’s a statement from Basick big-guy Nathan “Barley” Phillips:

There’s so much synergy and mutual respect between BASICK and PROSTHETIC, that when the opportunity arose to partner up and launch the label fully in the USA, we just knew that we had to make it happen.
This deal enables us to offer our bands and releases a fully dedicated U.S. staff throughout their touring and retail cycles, as well as providing us with the perfect opportunity to sign some more US bands and to also bring some of our European talent to American shores!

Bringing Basick acts to America!? Finally! Hopefully we can get Uneven Structure and Chimp Spanner over here once Basick’s presence grows into the new year. Prosthetic are also no strangers to the advancing of prog, snatching up the likes of Last Chance To Reason and Scale The Summit, and at one point, Gojira. This pairing makes sense to me!

Basick have plans of opening an office in LA this year. I can’t wait to see their growth. The first release to take part in this deal is Chimpy’s upcoming EP All Roads Lead To Here, which is due out February 14th.

The Omega Experiment released one of the coolest EPs last year with Karma. The only reason it didn’t make my top 20 list beyond the honorable mention is because of its short length and because I was holding out for the full album release, which was finally announced this weekend.

The Omega Experiment was produced by frontman/guitarist Dan Weiten and mastered by Tesseract‘s Acle Kahney, with the above glorious album artwork from Igor Omodei of Uneven Structure. The album will be available on Bandcamp and iTunes Valentine’s Day, February 14th. It’s going to be awesome.

Below, you can check out a teaser of what you can expect to hear of the new record. You can also pick up Karma for free at Bandcamp.

This is probably one of the better years for me since I began listening to metal. I don’t know if it’s due to a broadened taste, me actually paying more attention this year, or if the genre decided to collectively progress, but 2011 was just absolutely fantastic. I knew six months ago that compiling a best-of list for this year would be tricky, and of course it was!

Here’s the thing with my personal top-20 that you’ve probably read of in other lists; after the first couple of albums, the list is completely arbitrary and depending on my mood of the day, this list could be shuffled all about and perhaps replaced. My list also doesn’t follow our ratings scale and essentially came down to what I felt I enjoyed the most this year. So if you’re thinking to yourself, “hey, Alkahest gave X a 4 and Y a 5, then why is X listed higher?”…

Well, you’re going to have to figure that one out on your own, I guess. I’m fickle. Let us begin!

Lets get one thing clear; 2011 was a gnarly year for music, and regardless of what I listed and what was missed, this year provided a shit ton of albums that made this a year we won’t soon forget, and one that will be hard to top. I originally had a top 20, but decided to dwindle it down to just 10. Of course this lead to cutting out a bunch of great albums, but I wanted to focus on the ones that actually stuck with me and gave me more than just a “Wow, that sounds cool!” reaction. Anyway, 2012, you have some big shoes to fill. Now without further ado, here are my picks for the top 10 albums of 2011…

Our favorite record label Basick Records just released a free sampler which features tracks from an array of excellent bands on their roster, including the likes of Uneven Structure, Blotted Science, Monuments, The Algorithm, and a brand new track from Chimp Spanner called “Dark Age Of Technology.” You can stream and download the sampler below.

“Dark Age Of Technology” is from the upcoming EP All Roads Lead Here, which is due out February 6th. We’ll have more info on the EP soon enough!

Normally we’d end the day with a review or something like that, but December is a terribly slow month for music releases. With that in mind, we’ll try to extend the “news, etc” portion of the day to compensate, but news is almost just as slow. What can you do, eh?

Uneven Structure released a video called The Forgotten SD Cards, which is basically a collection of behind-the-scenes footage of the band, their touring, and their video shoot for “Awaken”. It’s all wonderfully shot, and is pretty interesting if you’re a fan of the band—which you should be anyway because they released one of the best albums of the year, Februus. That’s out now on Basick Records. Give this little doc a view above.

Oh hey, more Basick-related news! I think at this point it’s safe to say that Basick Records are the best record label around when it comes to the ratio of excellent bands on their roster, which comes out to about 100%. They’ve just been on fire lately, releasing some of the best albums this year, including Uneven Structure‘s Februus and AliasesSafer than Reality. In case you didn’t think they could get any better, think again, because they’ve just announced the signing of both The Algorithm and Skyharbor.

The Algorithm is the experimental one-man project of Frenchman Rémi Gallego that fuses electronic music and metal with a style come have called djentstep, which actually works far better than you’d expect. The Algorithm will release a new single EP titled Tr0jans in early 2012, as well as a new album later on in the year! You can stream a track from the single, “Isometry,” below.

Skyharbor also began as a one-man project from Keshav Dhar under the joke moniker Hydrodjent before evolving into a project that is now seeing worldwide attention, bringing in guest artists including Daniel Tompkins (ex-Tesseract) and Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth). This is top-notch Indian progressive metal that will likely blow minds next year when the debut album Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos. Here’s an edit of the song “Celestial”, featuring the work of the aforementioned guest artists.

Exciting! We’ll have more info on these releases when they’re available!

With the impending release of their debut album Måsstaden, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that the ravenous Swedes of Vildhjarta will round out djent’s version of ‘The Big Four,’ which also includes the likes of Periphery, Tesseract, and fellow thallmen Uneven Structure. Indeed, they carry many of the common staples that the genre is known for; the syncopated riffing, twangy guitar tones, and use of ambiance come in spades. However, Vildhjarta do much to differentiate themselves from the pack with their own distinct flair and nuance, being much more dark, unsettling, hypnotic and off-kilter with their refreshingly chaotic and dissonant approach at a genre that some believe is starting to wear thin.

Since we first heard it, it hasn’t left our ears much since. Uneven Structure‘s much anticipated debut album Februus is making waves that will no doubt propel them to the forefront of progressive metal. We spoke with uneven axeman Auré “worC” Pereira for an interview regarding Februus, his kickass hair, and other such oddities.

First off, introduce yourself! Who are you, what do you do, and why should people care?

Hey my name’s Auré, I play guitar in Uneven Structure and people should care because I have strange hair.

So your debut album Februus is finally here and the feedback has been phenomenal. How’s it feel?

After all these years of hard work, it feels a bit weird actually to know that Februus is finally out and that we don’t have any control on it anymore. To be honest we weren’t expecting such a huge amount of feedback. People seem to enjoy it a lot, the reviews have all been very positive and as far as I know pre-sales are good so yeah, we can say we are really happy with how things look at the moment.
