A lot of people are excited for 11/11/11 because of the new Elder Scrolls game Skyrim, but I’m legitimately more excited for something else that sees release on that date, SHINING‘s Blackjazz Live DVD. I’m so excited, that I’ll be giving away a free copy to one reader (details to come in the coming weeks).

Terrorizer have debuted a clip from the DVD, “Madness and the Damage Done.” The video, above, excited me even more for its release. It looks absolutely insane, and apparently an epileptic’s worst nightmare.

Blackjazz Live is due out November 11th on Indie Recordings in Europe and Prosthetic in North America.

Norway’s Shining are a peculiar band that took our hearts and ran with them last year when they released their album Blackjazz. It was easily an album that made a leap to my top 10 albums of 2010. If you’re not familiar with this group, imagine what it would sound like if Nine Inch Nails and Enslaved wrote a jazz record together. It’s absolutely nuts.

At the end of last year or so (I forget), the band recorded one of their live performances, which the band promised would be released as a live CD/DVD combo. I was excited, but eventually forgot about it. Recently, the band has made good on their promise and announced Blackjazz Live! They released the trailer above which highlights clips of the album’s tracklist. NEAT!

Here’s a rundown of the album’s production personnel:

Produced by Munkeby
Mixed by Sean Beavan (Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Slayer)
Mastered by Tom Baker (Marilyn Manson, David Lynch, Nine Inch Nails)
Graded by John Cryer (Muse)
Film directed by Anders Børresen

As you can tell, this DVD is going to be legit! Seriously, this looked so good that I immediately pre-ordered two copies—one for myself and… well… you’ll see!

Blackjazz Live is due out 11/11/11 on Prosthetic Records. Those of us in the States can pre-order it here for a measly $15.

Norway’s Shining, which released one of the best records of 2010 with Blackjazz, are releasing a live album/DVD filled with selections from their discography. The live DVD is entitled Live Blackjazz and will be released November 11th. I can’t wait, and neither should you.  After the jump, here are a couple of reasons why you should be shitting your pants right now.  If you aren’t familiar with Shining, get on it.

I’m sure most people who frequent this website are familiar with my love affair for Post-Black Metal. In my search for similar acts who dabble in taking black metal to it’s opposite extreme, I discovered Smohalla, a band with a touch more avant-garde flair than your run-of-the-mill Niege projects that seem to saturate the niche genre. While Smohalla were indeed a break from the shoegaze-oriented bands that I enjoyed, their brand of music entails more madness and psychedelic disorder similar to that of Ulver rather than just another Alcest, still managing to transcend the genre’s boundaries. This was about a year ago, and there was only an EP and a single or two available, so there was really nothing significant to write home about. Now though, Smohalla popped up again seemingly out of nowhere with their full-length debut album Resilience. I must admit, it’s an experience I wasn’t ready for.

“Hours pass, slow and submissive

And I don’t know what to do

I live inside myself…”

These tortured final moments of Obsidian Kingdom‘s latest offering 3:11 are hypnotic and downright eerie as the ticking of a clock closes the album past unsettling atmospherics, mirroring the introspective lyrics of a man lost alone, seemingly inside of his own mind.

3:11 was supposed to be an advance of a conceptual album focused on fear. It occurred to us as a casual thing, after writing a few songs we realised that we we’re constantly referring to things that we were really scared of…” explains guitarist and vocalist, Rider G Omega. “In the end, we as humans still share some very old fears that bring us together. Thus, we see it as a very powerful tool of communication.

“We believe that optimal musical communication can only be achieved when there is a background of intense feeling from the speaker. And in order to deeply feel something it’s always better to have experienced it by oneself… or else be really good at faking.”

Despite possible inferences associated with the lush soundscapes of shoegaze, Obsidian Kingdom’s promotion as a post-black metal band isn’t entirely inaccurate; while the band sports a prominent blackened tenacity and grim roots, they certainly transcend the genre’s confined boundaries. The Spaniards’ collective repertoire runs the gamut from doom to progressive metal, with the forward-thinking attitude and spirit of Norway’s Shining and the musicianship of seminal extreme prog band Enslaved, showing the potential to be one of the best new bands in progressive metal.

[Heavy Blog Is Heavy would like to announce its newest writers, Gunnar (DeusExMachina) and Tim (Amnesian). We've already heard from Tim, who reviewed This Time It's War's Terror Plots. Today, Gunnar talks about how he got into metal. Welcome guys! - JR]

I’ve had a very long road down the path to extremely innovative and unique material. The bands I now enjoy include Periphery, Tesseract, Volumes, The Crinn, Son of Aurelius, Shining, Quartered, Between The Buried and Me, and Arsis. However, without the aforementioned bands, I’d still be listening to terrible rap music like I was back in the early days of my existence.

Finding All That Remains is what I really consider to be the beginning of my metal days. I discovered them when they released The Fall of Ideals, an album I’ve considered seminal ever since its release. That band helped me get into numerous other bands, including another one of my old favorites, The Black Dahlia Murder, whom Shannon Lucas had since left to play drums for. This helped me get into metalcore, death metal, melo-death, and black metal. And from there, it was a chain reaction of sorts. With that came Blackened Death, Grind, Mathcore, Progressive, etc.

Thank god I found these bands before All That Remains released Overcome and …For We Are Many.  Those albums disappointed me so much. But you know what? I bought them, even though I knew that they were not that good. Because you know why? I still support them. Every time I can. For two reasons.

  1. I’m always hoping for a return to form.
  2. Because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am.

And that’s how it should be.

Oh sweet Jesus yes. Norway’s avant garde industrial jazz metallers SHINING will be filming an upcoming concert at Rockefeller, Oslo on November 3rd (with special guests Killl) for a future DVD release. Needless to say, this tickles me; living in rural America is a pain in the ass when it comes to catching metal shows, so a live release helps me to cope.

If you haven’t heard SHINING’s Blackjazz yet, do it immediately. It’s honestly on of the best albums put out this year. Seeing it in a live format would be absolutely crazy. I can’t wait for this release.

For an idea of what the DVD might look like, here’s the band’s video for “Madness and the Damage Done.”

SHNNG PRSNT RMGDN CNCRTO

Those Norwegian industrio-jazz metallers Shining are at it again, with a new EP! Here’s the press release, which explains it better than I ever could:

Exclusive new RMGDN track released for download

11 days ago, SHINING and ENSLAVED performed at the Roadburn Festival the last ever performance of our “Armageddon Concerto”, conceived, composed and performed with our fellow Norwegian explorers ENSLAVED. We now release the opening movement “RMGDN” as a download on all major digital stores worldwide (iTunes, eMusic, Amazon etc.).

The track “RMGDN” is the 13 minutes long opener for the Concerto, and was recorded by SHINING along with the rest of “Blackjazz”. It was of course also mixed by the eminent Sean Beavan and mastered by the impeccable Tom Baker.

“RMGDN” has only been available as a very special bonus track on a limited amount of vinyl “Blackjazz” records, and is now available as download for the first time.

This is pretty sweet. Blackjazz is an amazing album and I’m excited to hear this track, as I never got a vinyl version because I’d need to import it, and that’s too expensive for my blood. Speaking of which, I checked on iTunes. This EP is $11. That’s a little steep for 13 minutes of music, don’t you think? On second thought, I think I’ll pass on this one for a while… at least until someone uploads it.

Ihsahn performed his first show this year at the Inferno Festival in Oslo, Norway. On Easter, no less. He is backed by the band Leprous and Shining’s Jørgen Munkeby playing sax. Check out those lights. Woah. Epileptics be warned during the really heavy and fast parts. If Ihsahn ever brings his solo act to America, you can bet you can sign me up.

After the jump, “A Grave Inversed”.

Madness and the Damage Done

If you read this site and don’t know Norway’s SHINING yet, then shame on you for being so dense. I gave Blackjazz a 4.5/5 and touted it as the 2nd great album to come out so far (after Ihsahn‘s After, which coincidentally features SHINING frontman Jorgen Munkeby playing sax).

The video features live footage from concerts in Trondheim and Stavanger, Norway last month. The video was produced by a small Norwegian video production company called MONITORmedia.

Visit SHINING on MySpace, because they are awesome as shit.
