Post Rock Post – May 2018

But lo and behold, here we face the Post Rock Post for May and there’s not a lot of meat on them bones. Previous months have been pretty stacked, so what’s to explain this sudden scarcity? Perhaps it’s a desire by introspective bands to hit peoples’ ears when they know they crave “inside music”, when Winter is in full force and keeping you aside. Maybe it’s just coincidence and I’m reading way too much into this. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because Nick has been away doing Life Things™ and I’m flying solo again. Who knows? What a mystery.

In any case, the lack of quantity should by no means imply a lack of quality; the albums listed below are as excellent as they are varied. And varied they are: running from a type of dark post rock that flirts constantly with post metal, through forest dreams and ambient sojourns in pastel lands, all the way to nu-prog influenced guitar lines and the saccharine joy they bring with them, this months’s post rock post brings with it a mood to suit all colors.

MMXVIII – Pelagic Record’s Fantastic Year And The Depths Yet To Come

We’ve had our eyes on Pelagic Records ever since the label was started around the post metal powerhouse that is The Ocean. Their mission seems to be the quality release of anything hovering around the post metal and rock monikers, extending their fingers into dark folk, electronic beats and more. While Pelagic has been doing great things over the years since their founding, 2017 seems to have been a true watershed for them. From stellar releases (with names like Lo!, Labirinto, LLNN, pg.lost and many more) to new signings (like Ancestors, one of my favorite doom bands of all time), Pelagic has been all over the map of the metal community. Nothing drives home their upwards momentum more than a compilation they themselves have released, in conjunction with Visions Magazine.

A fact that’s often lost on an American audience is the connection of Italian culture and the occult. From early vampire movies to the esoteric circles of the Tourino literary scene, Italian film, music and literature have been dealing with the absurd, the fantastical and the downright terrifying for well over half a century. The connections to music are plentiful; the Italian punk scene for example has always been fascinated/repulsed with occult imagery. This is fertile ground for post metal as the saturated genre already gravitates towards the obscure and esoteric. Thus, it is no surprise that Lento’s latest release, Fourth, marries post metal and occult imagery. It goes further than just the cover art, effective as it is; the music itself gives us off this distinct vibe of otherness, of a dark presence surrounding you.
