Scion Rock Fest News Abound!

The PRP have been busy reporting news about the upcoming Scion Rock Fest, and like the musical vulture that I am (think The Beatles’ cameo in The Jungle Book, only less Mancunian and more distortion) I’ve compiled what I can find here for you in one bite-sized place – so if we’re carrying on the vulture analogy it’s about proportionate to some kind of small rodent. Yummy.

LA Weekly has confirmed the Fox Theater and the Glasshouse in Pomona, CA as the simultaneous venues for the event, which will take place on 5th March, which is a Saturday! Hurrah!

The line-up is only rumoured at the moment, but there are some serious gems if they’re true. We’ve got the likes of:

Party metal is what it means.

Exams are done and the holidays are all upons. I am relieved and I feel like letting go, so let’s celebrate!

First is the obvious. The purveyor of party himself, Mr. Andrew WK.

Being sung in their native language, I can’t understand a damn word that Norway’s Kvelertak are screaming on this, their self-titled debut record – but I don’t give a rat’s netherquarters. Tone for the review: this album is GOOD.

They were described recently by a friend as “Baroness if they were raised on black metal” (interestingly, note the stylistic similarities in album artwork between the two), and shit in the snow, he’s not far off – Vocalist Erlend Hjelvik has that kind of caustic screech usually synonymous with the darkest of metal genres. It sounds GOOD!

Personally, I’d liken them more to Every Time I Die. This may seem like a strange jump, but the music itself is actually more balls-out rock & roll than anything – there are riffs galore, and they are GOOD!

Wow, this is going well isn’t it?

Converge: Live in Birmingham

Update: Marc Broussely of LoudPixels.net took some high quality video of the concert for your viewing pleasure. Make sure you check it out!

I’m in there somewhere too

This one I’ve been waiting for for a long, long time. I mentioned last week that Converge were one of the bands that made me heavy. Shamefully, in all this time, I’ve never seen them live – and it’s not for lack of presence. Two summers ago they passed through London twice – but I was indisposed being poor and jobless back home in the Midlands.

So when they announced their European tour in support of the phenomenal Axe to Fall, I made a (Broken) vow to catch them this time. “No problem,” I thinks, “I’ll definitely be in London this time!”

Then the night I went to book my tickets I get a call from the guy on the left in the picture above who looks like a duck (and he’s going to hate me for saying that if he ever reads this). “Hey Chris,” he says, “why don’t you come to the Birmingham show? Everyone from home is going!”

I could hardly say no. I mean for God’s sake, I met up with only three of the guys, but half the room was from my town.

But I get ahead of myself. I arrived a little to late to see openers Kvelertak, but was bang on time for a £4(!!) pint and the beginning of Gaza‘s set.
