Last week, I reviewed Perihelion‘s Agg, an album which augments post-black with plenty of psychedelic, melancholic, and even gothic influences. During the review, I cited the unmistakable influences of bands like Katatonia and Anathema on the band. Today, we’re proud to premiere “Rejtek”, one of the tracks on which these influences shine most clearly. Starting out with a vocal-focused approach, “Rejtek” creates the kind of rich and effective emotional tapestry which makes Agg work, channeling a sort of black n’ roll aesthetic through the evocative riffs and bass which run counterpoint to the vocals. These vocals utilize the melancholic melody of the instruments to paint the track’s main thrust, soaring and falling away again to great dynamic effect.

The track’s last passages, starting roughly three quarters into it builds on these elements. Through the vocals, which become increasingly more harrowed and laden with emotion, this last passage brings the track into a sort of crescendo. After it, the guitars spend some time re-exploring the main themes of the track, setting us up for the following song. This speaks a lot to what makes Agg work as an album, namely the neat way in which (relatively short) tracks both stand out as their own thing and work together to make a grander whole.

Agg releases on December 6th. You can pre-order it right here through the band’s Bandcamp.
